Figure 02 shows the estimated coverage of cases by

adulticides in all districts during 2014. Overall
coverage of Dengue cases has been 37% with space
spraying (fogging). The highest coverage was seen
in Killinochchi (363%), while in Rathnapura and
Gampaha it was 21.8% and 22.4% respectively. It
reflects that much less than the total number of
cases reported have been covered by fogging in
many areas with high case reporting.

To date, vector control is a key measure for dengue

prevention. In contrast to the clinical management
and vaccine development, vector control strategies
have shown limited improvement. Space spraying
(thermal and ULV fogging) was used as the adult
vector control method in many endemic areas.
Further, the key larval control methods include
chemical (Temephos, etc) and biological methods
(larvivorous fish, etc). Among these, space spraying
has been commonly implemented as it is expected
to prevent a considerable number of new dengue
cases if applied optimally according to the standard
guidelines.
Thermal fogging of insecticides is used to achieve
rapid knock down of the adult Aedes vectors. In Sri
Lanka, Technical Malathion (95% Malathion) and
Pesguard FG 161 [d-tetramethrin4% (W/V) +
Cyphenothrin 12%(W/V) +inert ingredients] are the
commonly used adulticides. Temephos 1% sand
granules is the major insecticide used in larval
control, specially in water storage containers.
Thermal fogging is carried out by hand carried
(portable) and vehicle mounted thermal foggers.
Hand carried machines are meant for restricted
outdoor use and enclosed spaces. WHO
recommends thermal fogging of Technical
Malathion and Pesguard in the surrounding area of
the houses/premises of detected dengue cases,
during the early phase of disease outbreak. It is
practised in many endemic areas.

dengue case. It is assumed that a fogging machine
with a 5 liter capacity requires two fillings to cover
one dengue case. Table 01 gives the preferred
concentrations of adulticides used in thermal
fogging.
Adulticides (Technical Malathion and Pesguard)
distribution from January to December, 2014 by
districts is given in Figure 01.
