ENTRY TABLE
SKILL LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE TIME: 4 HOURS COST: $111

Even if you're short on space, a narrow console table is a handy addition to an entry.
We built this from stair tread boards and table legs. Have the pieces cut at Lowe's,
then all you have to do is connect them. The wood is oak, so it's easy to apply a
traditional stain or paint it to match your space. For step-by-step instructions and
plans, go to LowesCreativeldeas.com/Extras.

emodeling a bathroom-even a small 7'X8'

space like this one-is a big job. In this bath.
every design decision was made keeping cost
and energy efficiency in mind. The result: an
affordable and stylish retreat.
The first step was to remove the original tile
and fixtures and put up classic. inexpensive subway tile lor
a clean slate with a strip of decorative glass tile threaded
across the wall to add style. New white and chrome fixturesincluding a cast-iron tub and a water-saving toilet. faucet. and
showerhead-breathe new life into the bath. Next we added a
shower cubby by carving out a niche between the wall studs
and dressing it up with glass tile. Then we ditched the shower
door. opting for the softer look of a curtain. To boost style and
storage and give the space a stronger focal point. we replaced
the petite wall-mount smk with a traditional marble-top vanity
in a rich espresso finish. Above t. pretty chrome sconces
were set to dress up a recessed medicine cabinet that marries
elegance and convenience. Spa-like blue paint on the wall
and porcelain floor tile added soothing finishing touches.

IDEAS.

II
Al isa makes her soap the old-fashioned way-from scratch using lye, essential oils,
and natural ingredients from her organic garden. Alisa's new favorite: Cabernet
Sauvignon soap with a rich red tmt and creamy te)(ture.

MAKf T YOURSELF
Homemade soap is easier to make and
more popular than ever. You can make
soap from scratch like Alisa, above left.
or opt for simple melt-and-pour bases
available online. Choose from a variety of
bases (glycerine. goat's milk. aloe vera.
or shea butter) and personalize with oils.
fragrances. herbs. and natural exfoliants
(oatmeal. crushed seeds. or fine sand).
We used about 5 pounds of base to fill our
molds. left. To make, cut the soap base
into small chunks and place in a bowL
Microwave 1 minute or until most of the
chunks have melted. Stir in ingredients.
then pour into your mold.

EASY TO-MAKE MOLDS

GIVE IT A WRAP
To help preserve soap or give as gifts,
wrap your bars in cheesecloth (#125871)
or brown masking paper (#111790)
and t ie the ends with twine (#66510).
Download free patterns for labels at
LowesCreativeldeas.com/ Extras.

For round bars of soap. use a 3"xl0"

PVC pipe (#23834) and cap (#23926)
as a mold (approximately $11). Cap
the end of the pipe and line the irmide
with parchment paper. To keep the pipe
upright and steady while pouring the
melted base, we put paper towels in the
bottom of a pitcher and set the pipe inside
the pitcher. Carefully pour the melted
soap inside the parchment paper lining.
Let set overnight. Use a sharp knife to cut
the soap. Makes about a dozen 1" bars.
For rectangular bars. build our
easy-to-make wooden soap mold
(approximately $30) Our l4"x3Wx3lfz''
box makes about 12 l" bars. Line the box
with parchment paper and carefully pour
melted soap base into the mold. Spray the
surface of the soap with rubbing alcohol
to prevent bubbles. For instructions to

RAZING THE BAR

A kitchenette/bar area is a staple of
many basement retreats. but the one
here lacked seating and seemed
better suited for frat-house functions
than a gathering of family and friends .
To make the setup more conducive
to co~versation. casual dining. and
entertaining, the long countertop
was swapped out for a bar table with
stools. New cabinetry. countertop.
sink, faucet. microwave. and compact
refrigerator make the galley-style
kitchenette more versatile. An easyto-make wood-and-metal wine rack
keeps bottles close at hand and
enhances the clean look. A mosaic-tile
backsplash and pretty pendant lights
elevate the elegance.

AFTER
Porcelain t ile flooring helps

and is an easy-to-clean surface
in front of the sliding door. Like
the coffee table in t he living
area, the bar table was made
from interior doors, creating
design continuity.
