Australia Day

Weekly Headlines

NYSF provides for a busy January

Jerrabomberra Rotary provided had a strong presence at the NYSF in January with three members
attending the first dinner on the 8th and seven attending the second dinner last Thursday, 22nd. Member
families also hosted students for their Sunday rest days with a total of 17 students hosted across six club
families over the two Sundays. This is always a special time of the year when we get to meet some of
Australias brightest young minds. See Page 2 for more information about the NYSF and photos of some
of our hosted students.

Australia Day Community breakfast goes a great success

The annual Community Breakfast on Australia Day was a great success with over 300 community members
enjoying the morning by the lake and the excellent bacon, sausage and eggs, plus coffee, tea and juices.
A hearty breakfast with good music and dancing girls made a great start to the day. See pages 305 for a
pictorial journey through the morning.

Handover of the Club Bulletin Trophy

At the District Changeover last July, Jerrabomberra Rotary were joint winners of the Club Bulletin Trophy
for the 2013-14 Year. We shared the honours with Pambula Rotary. With only one trophy the clubs agreed
that Jerrabomberra would hold the Trophy for the first six months and then pass it to Pambula for the
second six months.
True to that agreement the Trophy was
passed to the President of Pambula last
week while Past President Paul and Sue
were having a break on the Coast.

Lots to read about and look

at in this weeks 10 page
bumper issue, as we squeeze
in reports on the NYSF and
the Australia Day Community
BBQ Breakfast. There are
plenty of photos to enjoy.
Also no surprises that Hannah
has been enjoying herself
before she returns to school
life.
This weeks meeting was a
social pub outing, so no
business to report.
To test the imagination of
readers there is a Caption
Competion on page 9.
I will be taking a break as
Editor for the next few
weeks. Club Service Director
Mez is arranging for a stand

National Youth Science Forum

The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF), as we know it today,

started some 30 years ago as the National Science Summer School
with Rotary Australia as its founding partner. Rotary remains the
key partner in the NYSF and this national not-for-profit
organisation enjoys high-level support with the Chief Scientist of
Australia as its Science Patron. The NYSF also enjoys partnerships
with the Australian Federal and State governments, major industry, national research institutes and universities.
The NYSFs mission is to provide community minded and science focused young Australians an opportunity for network
development and insight into skills, careers and a lifetime of achievement in science, engineering and technology.
The NYSF helps students moving into Year 12, who wish to follow careers in science, engineering and technology by introducing
them to research and researchers, by encouraging the achievement of excellence in all their undertakings, and by helping to
develop their communication and interpersonal skills. It also fosters discussion of, and interest in major national and global issues
and emphasises the importance of maintaining continuing active interests in sport, arts and music.
Rotary clubs across Australia play a major role in the identification and selection of suitable Year 11 students, and Rotary District
selection panels determine the final list of successful attendees who then attend the NYSF in January prior to commencing Year
12.
The annual Forum was until recently exclusively held in Canberra and hosted by The Australian National University with two 2
week residential sessions. However the growing interest and numbers of suitable students saw a third session introduced in Perth
in 2010, co-hosted by the Curtin University and The University of Western Australia. Unfortunately in 2015 the Perth session did
not go ahead, so the two sessions in Canberra were expanded to cater for this absence.
After the January sessions the NYSF continues with a series of Next Step Programs in Australias capital cities and is then ongoing
through the network of people with common aims.
One of the most important aspects for the students who pass through the NYSF is a network of friends, colleagues and support
groups throughout Australia, which prove to be of great value to participants for the whole of their lives.
With the intense nature of the two week session the students need a half way break and Rotary clubs come to the fore again by
providing the students with host families for the Sunday and an opportunity to do their washing and relax in comfortable
surroundings.

Always strong supporters of NYSF - 6 students

were hosted by the club during the first NYSF
session and 11 during the second session.

Australia Day Community Breakfast

Jerrabomberra Rotary once again hosted an excellent Australia Day Community Breakfast. Members (at least those that didnt
sleep in or sprain their ankles) were on site at 6am to set up the Community Centre surrounds and do the decorations. As
mentioned in last weeks issue the new promotion stand was on display with some very informative material about Rotary and
the clubs projects locally and internationally. The large stand display was supported by a table full of pamphlets and handouts, a
video display of the Tonga project, and Paul and Sue R who chatted to interested guests.
The Clubs own resident musician, Ian Wholohan, set up his gear and provided excellent entertainment throughout the morning.
Entertainment was also provided (in an impromptu way) by the three ladies serving the coffee, tea and juices. Mez, Lizzie and Liz
(now known as the three Zs) broke into jigs when suitable music was playing and provided an excellent backup dance and vocals
group for Ian and for the CDs when Ian was having a break.
The BBQ was its usual efficient machine with guests served enthusiastically after being greeted by Carolyn. You just cannot beat a
good bacon and egg roll for breakfast on Australia Day and the 300-350 people who enjoyed the morning clearly agreed.
Community Service Director Jan had this message for everyone after the event.
Congratulations on another very successful Australia Day Breakfast.
Thank you all for working so hard and efficiently. I was given many Thankyous from members of the
Community. I would especially like to thank Colin and Cathy who organised all the food and other
consumables.
The cooks and servers were kept busy and all the food was eaten up. The tea, coffee and juice servers
were busy each time I looked and are also to be congratulated on their dancing skills which were
enjoyed by the patrons.
The new advertising boards looked very professional and provided interest for those that wanted to
read them. Thanks Paul and Sue.
On first count the Donations were $768.10 + 1 US cent and 1 small unidentifiable silver coin.
If the rest of this Rotary year goes as well as this first event for 2015 the year looks good.
Thanks once again to all the Jerra Club.
Capturing the day on film were Bruce and Paul (Roger) and a selection of their photographs are include on this and the following
2 pages for your enjoyment.

Getting the set up right. Jan checks the BBQ set up and gives a thumbs up (above
right). Lizzie carefully works out where to hang the flags (above centre), and then the
cooks get to work (right).

Wheres Hannah?

Another busy week for Hannah who enjoyed the last days of her holiday with Glenn and
Glenda up in sunny Queensland and made it back in time to join in the Australia Day
celebrations and help out with the cooking on the BBQ.
The photos below tell the story without much additional commentary, other than to say
the experiences continue to mount up. For Hannahs parents who are hopefully enjoying
reading about the adventures of their daughter, we can say that Hannah is going back to
School this week and things will get a little quieter for a few weeks. But then it will be off
to Surf Camp in mid-February and the big trek away is not far off now coming up in late
March and April.

In Nambour, Queensland it

Hannah now has the measure of the Big
Banana and the Big Prawn.

While on their travels Glenn and Glenda dropped in to catch up with an ex

Charter Member of Jerrabomberra Rotary, Lindy Hooper. Lindy and Geoff
moved from Jerra to Nambour, Queensland several years ago but still stay in
touch with some of the club members.
Pictured here are Lindy together with Glenda and Hannah enjoying a light
snack, as you do when people drop in.

On Australia Day Hannah was into the action

and enjoyed cooking the eggs for the Egg and
Bacon rolls. Yum

Weekly Meeting Summary Meetings 826

Meeting Number 826 At the Pub

Due to many members being either away on holidays, or committed to other
Rotary activities, such as the NYSF, only 12 happy souls were available for the
meeting. Clearly with no point in attempting to do anything other than enjoy
good company and fellowship the meeting was convened in the Jerra Tavern
and absolutely no business was discussed.
Everyone enjoyed themselves so much no one remembered to take a picture.
But Jerraganda sources were able to track down the usual selfie from the
Queen of Selfies. Jon and Chilly joined in.

A Quick Quiz
Who turned up for last weeks meeting at the school, only to find the school locked up and in darkness?
Clue Number 1. The member clearly does not read emails.
Clue Number 2. The member clearly does not read the Jerraganda.
Clue Number 3. The member is known for always wearing a hat.
Clue Number 4. There is no clue number 4. If you havent got it yet, there is no hope.

This weeks report comes from - Chris Hunter

Markets are back on deck but the residents obviously aren't! Still some stall holders
away and it was a very s....l....o....w day. Some confusion over stallholders taking
other stallholders tables and then those who own their own tables, have to take one
of ours. Today Dream Cuisine were the culprits - something to watch but I guess that is what happens when they are all
now stored in the one container. Met a new Hall club member who was there at 6.30 am?!? (Obviously no one told him
Hall arrive later) but he was very chatty and nice and bought us a coffee. Entertained the ladies (Cathy and Chris) while
Colin slaved away at the gate.
New driver trick this morning - where the gravel pedestrian path is beside the fence near the gate, one man slipped in the
only gap in the concrete bollards and decided he was going to park there. But on making eye contact with me (Chris) he
said, "I can't park here can I?" "Actually no - that is the pedestrian path" was the stern reply and so he drove off and
found another parking spot three car away. Why do they try it?
One naughty mother was lost by her son and soon returned when we announced her name over the coms system. Rule
No. 1: If you don't want your child to find you - don't ever tell them your real name - just leave it at "Mummy".
As I said a very SLOW day. Cheers.

OUR HISTORY
In 1998 the Rotary Clubs of Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan West Rotary decided to sponsor a new Rotary Club based in Jerrabomberra. Bill Lilley,
John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the joint roll of mentoring the development of the new club. (Peter Jarvis went
on to become our Charter President).
Advertising for potential members began in March 1998. After a successful campaign, the Club was chartered on 18 November 1998 with 26
members.
Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Storethe venue was very good until we grew in numbers. We then moved to the
Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years, and we now meet at the Jerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for 6.30
pm).
(Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club Newsletter and a design for the Club banner. There were some
good and some not so good suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the winning bulletin name Jerraganda and David Stevens was the successful
designer of our club banner. The design incorporated a goose and the windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate adjacent to the
Community Centre. Both the Jerraganda and the Club logo have evolved to keep pace with modern times.
We have always been, and continue to be, a vibrant and fun loving club providing valued community service, both locally and internationally. Our
motto is,

Doing Good and Having Fun
