AS Film Studies production planning: Location Report

For my AS level film studies portfolio, I have developed my planning
based on my textual analysis of Adulthood (2008) a teen drama and
12 Years a Slave (2013) a biographical historical drama. I explored
how the use of micro elements; mise en scene, sound,
cinematography and editing by directors to communicate ideologies
and values. I have based my location ideas mainly on my analysis of
Adulthood directed by Noel Clarke. My locations are similar to those
in the film adulthood.
Overall I plan to have a creative artifact of 9 key frames reflecting
some of the ideologies and values found in the film Adulthood. I
intend to use verisimilitude to reflect themes I found through the
analysis of Adulthood I also intend to try and use micro elements to
communicate to my audience just as the directors of 12 Years a
Slave and Adulthood did whilst meeting the codes and conventions
of drama films. In addition I will also make a screen test to describe
why each of my cast members was right for the part and how good I
think they are at acting. The locations that I have chosen are close
to my home and easily accessible. I did not require any permission
for either location as long as I dont photograph any staff working
near my location at the time.
Location-1 chestnut avenue south alleyway entrance

The location that I have chosen is local to my home in Walthamstow
making it easily accessible for me as well as my actors who also live
in Walthamstow. My first shot will be an establishing shot from the
entrance of the alleyway showing my protagonist on the floor to the
left next to the blue fence, at this point the protagonist is
unconscious. This will show my location clearly to the audience. And
the setting the characters are in. the mise en scene in the scene will
show the protagonist looking like a typical east London youth
dressed in a hoodie or tracksuit, jeans and trainers. My setting in a
London suburb is similar to the settings of Adulthood in this opening
sequence I plan to show the protagonist as being beaten up, and
confused which will set up the next few scenes.

I will also be using

this location for
my final flash back
and closing scene. In my final flash back my protagonist will be on a
bike riding into shot from behind the camera, while my antagonists
will be waiting and hiding behind the two white pillars for my
protagonist ride past. In this scene I intend to use as many different
shots from as many different angles as possible.
I have chosen to use this location as my final scene in my
production because it links directly to the first scene, which is the
first part of the final scene. In this scene my protagonist will be
standing and leaning up against the blue fence on the left. In this
scene I intend to use a medium close up and a long shot. There is

only one complication with using this location, as it is a public
footpath members of the public may be walking through this may
make the photo-shoot take longer than expected and delay the
completion of my task.
Location 2 behind a row of shops- Walthamstow

My second location will be used in the first of two flashbacks. I have

chosen to use the back of co-op on wood street in Walthamstow
because I thought it was an ideal location for a drug deal to take
place, it its hidden and out of sight making it a realistic setting for
this scene in my film. I do not need permission to use this location
as long as I do not film or take pictures of any staff working in the
shop at any time. In this scene I will show the drug deal taking place
and my protagonist putting items into a bag. I intend to use an
establishing shot to show the location, a long shot to show my
characters and a medium shot to show my protagonist carrying out
the drug deal and a close up of my protagonist putting items into a
bag. In this scene my characters will be wearing hoodies and jeans
or tracksuit and trainers. I intend to use all natural lighting in this
scene I plan to use a mixture of long shots, medium shots and close
ups in this scene. In this scene I will also be using props in the form
of fake drugs.
