Processinginstructions
Intheasrolledcondition,boronsteelscanbeprocessedinnearlythesamewayasstructuralsteelsofthesamestrength
level. After hardening, boron steels can be processed similarly to wearresistant steels. Sheets and plates that are taken
from cold storage to workshop processing, such as cutting, bending and welding, should be warmedup to room
temperature(+20C)beforehand.
Bending
Hot rolled boron steels in asrolled condition are more formable and allow smaller bending radii (see table below) than
boron steels in hardened condition. Hardened boron steels require higher bending force and will show more springback
effectthanboronsteelsinhotrolledcondition.

This offers considerable advantages: the weld metal will have higher toughness, better forming properties and lower

If the welded joints are positioned in low stress areas and the wear resistance of the weld is not critical, lowalloyed
consumablesarerecommended.

Bychoosingalowercuttingspeed,selectingtherightcuttingnozzlesandotherequipment,preheatingmaynotalwaysbe
necessary. When flame cutting hardened boron steel plates, the hardness tends to decrease in areas where the
temperature exceeds +200C. Small components and thin plate/sheet are more sensitive to decreased hardness when
flamecutting.
