BATTLE IN CHAPEL
ENDS IN A SUICIDE
Bank Official Kills Himself
After Shooting Woman and
Firing at Policemen
A pistol battle with the police in
a darkened Rosicrucian temple
yesterday m orning ended when a
middle-aged bank official shot
himself witftf*one of his two pistols
in front of the altar. A few min
utes earlier he had wounded a wo
m an volunteer worker as she fled
from a threatened suicide Daet.
The shooting occurred in the
eighth-floor lodge and temple
quarters of the Rosicrucian Order
a t 250 W est Fifty-seventh Street,
between Broadway and Eighth
Avenue. The dead m an was Charles
M. Liske, 52 years old, of 180 Sum
m it Avenue, Hackensack, N. J.
The woman was Miss Suzanne ten
Bosch, 39 years old, of 44-10 MacNish Street, Elm hurst, Queens.
Miss ten Bosch told detectives
th a t she had known Liske for ten
years. She said th a t they had
agreed on F riday night to break
off their relationship. She was
questioned in Roosevelt Hospital,
where she w as reported in good
condition w ith a flesh wound in
her rig h t , thigh.
According to a police reconstruc
tion Of the affray, Miss ten Bosch,
a nurse who does secretarial work
for the order, was alone in the
locked office shortly before 11
A. M. when Liske came to the door
carrying a brown leather attache

case. He had previously tele

phoned her from the'lobby.
A fter she led him to a reception
room overlooking the street, he
took two pistols (a long barreled
.38 caliber targ et and a 7-mm.
Mauser autom atic) from the case,
saying, You are going to die first,
then I ll kill myself."
No, I dont w ant to die, Miss
ten Bosch cried and tried to dis
arm him. One of the pistols was
discharged during the ensuing
struggle. Miss ten Bosch broke
away. Liske fired three shots at
her as she fled, one as she ran
down a short hallway in the office
and two in the main corridor.
Dr. Irwin Levy, a dentist, hear
ing the gunfire and screams, ran
from his office a t the fa r end of
the corridor and prevented her
from returning to the Rosicrucian
office. He told the police he saw
Liske standing in the reception
room, pointing a pistol a t his own
head.
Meanwhile, the police were sum
moned by Joseph Splain, an insur
ance broker with offices adjoining
Dr. Levy's.

Hundreds of persons gathered in

the street as a fleet of patrol cars
and a police emergency truck,
equipped with tear gas and rifles,
rushed to the scene.
Sgt. Alfred Chappel and Patrol
men William Gilroy and Robert
W hite of the W est Fifty-fourth
Street station located Liske in the
windowless temple room by the
clicking of an apparently jammed
pistol.

Leaving Patrolm an White in the

reception room to cover a possible
attack from the offices, which lie
between the temple and the front
windows, Sergeant Chappel and
Patrolm an Gilroy called to Liske

to throw out his pistol and surren

der.
t
They heard him m utter a reply
from the temple, in which a dim
green lamp was burning, but the
only audible word was kill.0
They took positions in an inside
vestibule leading to the temple. P a
trolman Gilroy fired twice into the
darkness. Three rapid shots was
returned. Sergeant Chappel fired
twice. There was a pause, then a
single shot from within the temple,
the sound of someone falling and it
was over.
/.
Liske was found lying on the
floor, the two pistols nearby, with
a contact wound in his left tem
ple.
The detectives said the fatal bul
let apparently came from the Mau
ser and from all indications, he
shot himself. This was confirmed
by A ssistant Medical -Examiner
Aaron Coblenz after examining the
body at the scene.

green lights, peggin* shots in the

The temple is approximately 20
by 50 feet and seats about 100
persons.
Liske's wife, Catherine, reached
by telephone a t her home, said she
had known of her husbands in
terest in Missten Bosch. She said
he was employed a t the Fiftysecond Street branch of the New
York Trust Company and she be
lieved he was assistant treasurer
there. They have no children.
The police said the Liskes had
been m arried th irty years but had
been separated on a t least one oc
casion. They were living together
a t the time of the shooting.

Cosmolux 'Color In
Music' Instrument
A new instrument called the Cos
molux produces beautiful color pat
terns upon a screen in response to
music or any sounds made before
its pickup microphone.
In contrast with several other
m ethods or machines which have
attempted to convert sound into
color, the Cosmolux does not em
ploy any keys or relays, but takes
the vibrations of a voice or instru
ment directly and, through Thyratron tubes and a unique circut,
actuates colored lights accurately
corresponding to the musical scale.
A definite sound or combination
of sounds always produces the
same color pattern on the screen,
and pitch and volume affect the
pattern uniformly and to a most
sensitive degree. Any phonograph
lecord, for instance, played before
the Cosmolux, produces on the
screen a color pattern which rep
resents the mood of the composi
tion.
The Cosmolux was demonstrated
to over a thousand delegates of the
International Convention of the
Rosicrucians at San Jose, Califor
nia, held recently. The instrument
was developed by Lester L. Libby,
an electrical engineer who holds
several patents in the field of elec
tronics, and who is Technical Di
rector of the Rosicrucian Science
Museum.
Libby explained the functions of
the instrum ent to a group of mem
bers from Santa Cruz, including
Mrs. Margaret Goodman, Marten
DeJonge, Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred
Maxwell, Mr. and Mrs. Paul J.
Veatch, and William Wilcox.

Sound to Color
Do you talk blup, green or red.
or do you talk in a com bination of
colors?

The El Paso Hosicrucians can

test the color of their voices when
they go to the Rosicrucian Temple
at San Jose. Calif.
A new instrum ent, called th e
Cosmolux. produces color patterns
upon a screen in response to music
or an y o ther sound picked up on
its microphone.
Ray W. Oakes, loca] district com
missioner, said the new instrum ent
was dem onstrated before delegates
at a recent Kosicrucian convention
in California.
People w ith pretty voices are
likely to hrrve a pretty color pattern.
Tbe Cosmolux uses principles
well known in physics, but in a
new combination. Most previous
instrum ents which attem pted to cor
relate sound with color electrically
succeeded in doing so in a range of
but one octave of the musical scale.
The Cosmolux reproduces three full
octaves.

all substances,

The aura ls nothing more than

according to recent theories,
that we as human beings are
constantly sensitive to and in

The aura, like the familiar

visible to us nor*do we ever see
a persons aura itself . . . but we
do see what the aura produces
Just as we see the light or power
produced by electricity. During
the convention demonstration,
human subjects were asked to sit
in front of various colored lights.
Against this background, the
magnetic field of the individual
altered the light waves from the
lamps so as to produce specifie
color changes.

Rosicrucian Order
Forms Local Group

The Supreme Grand Lodge of

the International Rosicrucian Or
der. AMORC, has authorized the
formation of a local chapter to
serve its members in Santa Cruz
and vicinity. According to Paul
J. Veatch. i 15 Trinity street, local
spokesman for the order, the new
chapter makes a total of more
than 125 Rosicrucian chapters in
this jurisdiction.
The newly appointed local offi
cers are: Paul J. Veatch. master;
Mrs. Nora Delon, secretary, and
Wiiliam Wilcox, guardian.
Veatch states the Rosicrucian
order is not a religious society,
but is a philosophical movement
devoted to the study of the scienc
es and the laws of nature as found
expressed in man. The tradition
al history of the order places its
establishment in 1350 B.C. during
the reign of Amenhotep IV. Phar
aoh of Egypt. The order first came
to America in 1694 a.m. and set
tled near what now is Fairmount
Park in Philadelphia.
In San Jose, the Rosicrucian or

der. patron of art and science,

maintains a science museum, a
planetarium, an Egyptian. Orien
tal museum and an extensive art
gallery. It promotes field and cam
era expeditions to archaeological
sites in remote corners of the
world.
Bimonthly meetings will be held
in the Palomar hotel on the sec
ond and fourth Mondays of each
month at 8:00 p.m.

Rosicrucians To
Observe Fete
Of New Year
The re-enactment of a ceremony
which began in ancient Egypt
more than 40 centuries ago will
be the high light of a local Rosicrucian conclave to be held Mon
day in the Palomar hotel.
According to Paul J. Veatch.
master of the Rosierueian Pron- j
aos of Santa Cruz, the ancient
Egyptians, from the time of Mem*
phis to the Ptolemaic period, be
gan their New Year on or about
the time of the vernal equinox,
when the sun enters the zodiacal
sign of Aries, which always oc
curs on or about March 21. This
was considered the beginning of |
the new year because spring is
symbolic of new life empha- i
sized by the reawakening of Na- '
ture from the dormant period of
winter, and the growth of living j
things.
The occasion of the New Year
Is celebrated, said Veatch, by a
symbolic feast in which the par
ticipants partake of simple foods
corresponding to certain basic
elements of Nature, such as: salt,
com. and unfermented grape
juice.

March 21 is also the beginning
of the fiscal penod of all Rosicrucian lodges, chapters, and
pronaoi throught the world, and
the date is marked by the instal- i

ministrative officers.
New officers of the local Rosicrucian organization who will be
installed are: E. J. Walters, mas
ter: Harry R. Held, secretary: and
Mrs. Mae Sawyer, guardian.
Many visiting members from
surrounding cities are expected to
attend.

that man knows, happen- in

Here, though, through the

The significance of these

THE MYSTICAL TEACHINGS POINTING TOWARDS GOD

Your present life is but one step in your eternal progression towards God.
The teachings of Christ as presented in the Holy Bible must be studied and
lived to progress satisfactorily towards this great goal but there are mystical
teachings not in the Bible taught by Christ to his inner circle of followers for
their [use?...| The general public at the time and to this day has not evolved to
the point where they are ready to grasp and value these great teachings.
A few people from time to time intuitively feel that their spiritual progress is
dependent upon further teachings than those afforded by their churches. They
search for something they know not quite what. It is to these people the
Rosicrucians have something to offer.
The Rosicrucians are made up of deeply religious people who themselves are
studying and applying these great teachings of both Christ and mystical
leaders from the ages. They neither believe in hiding their light under a bushel
nor casting their pearls before swine. To the sincere seeker, they extend their
helping hand. If you are interested you may write for the free book, The
Mastery of Life, which will be mailed without obligation.
