foundthe"ideaofenlightenment"inabook.Subsequently,hebuiltahutinhisparents'backyardand
startedpracticingmeditation.Asateenagerhehadapassionforracingbicyclesandworkedinabike
repairshop.[2]
Inhis20s,GraystudiedZenBuddhismundertheguidanceofhisZenteacherArvisJoenJustifor
fourteenyears.[3]JustiwasastudentofTaizanMaezumiRoshioftheZenCenterofLosAngeles.Gray
wasregularlysentbyArvistoZensesshinretreats,wherehealsostudiedunderJakushoKwongRoshi
oftheSonomaMountainZenCenter.Atage25hebeganexperiencingaseriesoftransformative
spiritualawakenings.Whilesittingaloneonhiscushion,Grayhadaclassickensho,orawakening
experience,inwhichhepenetratedtotheemptinessofallthingsandrealizedthattheBuddhaIhad
beenchasingwaswhatIwas.[2]Besideshishourslongmeditationsandprayer,healsostudiedbooks
aboutChristianmysticsandtheGospels.[4]
Forthenextfewyearshecontinuedhismeditationpractice,whilealsoworkingathisfathersmachine
shop.Inadditiontositting,hespentmanyhoursincoffeeshopswritinganswerstoquestionsthat
spontaneouslycametohim.Finally,at31,Grayhadanexperienceofawakeningthatputtorestallhis
questionsanddoubts.In1996,hewasinvitedtoteachbyArvisJoenJusti.[3]Hefirststartedgivingtalks
tosmallgatherings,inaroomabovehisaunt'sgarage,whichgrewoveryearsandhechangedhisname

SanghaisatermusedinseveralSanskritderivedlanguagesofIndiatorefertoaspiritual"assembly"or
community,traditionallyamonasticone,butitsusagevaries.AdyashantifoundedOpenGateSangha,
Inc.in1996whenhebeganteaching.Thissanghareferstoboththeorganizationitselfandhisstudent
communityasawhole.Theorganizationrunsonasmallstaff,aswellasmanyvolunteers,andhelps
coordinateAdya's(asheiscalledbyhisstudents)teachingandtravelschedule.Italsoproducesaudio,
visualandwrittenmaterialforpublication.
Afewtimesayear,theorganizationalsoholdsretreats,includingasixdaysilentmeditationretreat.[1]

Studentsinvitedtoteach
Adyashanti,likehisteacher,hasinvitedseveralofhisstudentsto"sharetheDharma",whichmeans
independentlyteachtootherstudents.[7]Astudentisconsideredsuitableforteachingoncetheyreach
whatAdyashanticonsidersadequatespiritualmaturity.
