Porcellan Co. LLC is a United Arab Emirates based company, spread over an area of 765,000 square meters
in Abu Dhabi area. Founded in 2006, it plays a key role within the strong local and regional presence of
Jamal Al-Ghurair Group (JAG) by decisively re-defining the concept of porcelain tiles.
Its effective sales network reaches key distributors in over 25 countries in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and
Europe. Porcellan serves large-scale distribution channels, specialized dealers, retailers and end-users. The
integrated efforts of its workforce along with the latest technologies utilized provided the company with
the capability to produce more than 50,000 square meters of tiles per day.
All the products manufactured by Porcellan match the quality and aesthetic criteria of architects, interior
designers and homeowners. There is no doubt that the company will set a new benchmark for porcelain in
the United Arab Emirates and worldwide.
It is worth mentioning that the company was established by Jamal Al-Ghurair who is accustomed to the
nuances of business and commerce at an early age. He recognized the untapped local and regional market
for porcelain tiles and bravely directed his vision into building one of the largest porcelain plants.

PRODUCTION PROCESS
RAW MATERIAL

The porcelain tiles process starts by selecting the raw materials required for the body composition of various tiles, which are
mainly clays, feldspars, alumina, zirconium, silica sands and kaolins. Porcellan uses fine and natural raw materials imported
from many countries around the world including Spain, Iran, Egypt, etc. The mixture of raw materials is crushed and then
moulded into the required shapes through special shaping processes, and finally fired in kilns at extremely high temperatures.

MILING & GRANULATION

The batched raw materials go into ball mills for grinding, mixing and transforming the ingredients into liquid-like refined
granules technically known as body slip. To complete this process effectively, Porcellan utilizes advanced ball mills from a
leader in supplying all production equipments for the tiles industry, SACMI.

SPRAY DRYING

Most of the water contained in the resulting body slip is removed by spray drying to form a powder with low moisture
content.

CROMA PRESS FEEDING

The CROMA press feeding unit is an advanced technology from LB company for the production of porcelain tiles with high
aesthetic values. The four CROMA machines at Porcellan make it possible to produce a wide range of technical tiles with
veined and varied color effects. In case of glazed products, after spray drying, is pressing and formation

PRESSING & FORMATION

The resulting powder is collected in huge silos before it goes to the SACMI pressers, PH-3800 or PH-6200, to be transformed
to the desired body size and shape. The pressing stage is controlled and regulated by proportional valves, which ensure
maximum pressing precision and repeatability over time without any variation in the tiles. The pressers have high compaction
force, high productivity, easy adjustment and consistency in holding the pressing cycle schedule. In addition, the machines are
eco-friendly because the consumption level is reduced to the minimum by eliminating energy use during stops. All SACMI
branded pressers at Porcellan have an operating pressure of 3,800 tons or 6,200 tons. This allows the production of various
tile sizes ranging from 30x30 cm to 100x100 cm.

GLAZING

Glazing involves applying one or more coats of silica sand which gives a high-gloss finish and makes the surface very hard,
smooth and slip resistant. Tile glazing is mostly used for residential units since it seals out water, is easy to clean, protects the
tile from wear and tear and extends the life of the surface.

FIRING

Firing is a crucial stage within the whole production process. During this stage, the texture of the tile will be adjusted
providing the body with strength, size stability, and resistance to chemical agents. At Porcellan, a state-of-the-art Sacmi kilns,
with a total length of 218.4 meters, are used for firing. Recycled and natural gas is used to supply kilns with heat that is then
transmitted to the tile body through radiation.

POLISHING

Porcellan has six polishing lines that provide glazed and technical polished products with a mirror-like soft and brilliant
surface. In case of matt products, polishing is not required.

RECTIFICATION

Porcellan has eight squaring lines to deliver products with squared edges and size uniformity. Rectified tiles must be installed
with minimum 2mm grout lines.

SORTING

All tiles with surface defect and variation in shade will be eliminated. There are nine advanced sorting lines at Porcellan to
automatically check each tile separately and ensure the quality of the products.

PACKING

Tiles are wrapped rigidly with a thick cartoon box around their perimeter to ensure it is safely delivered to the customers.

LAYING INSTRUCTIONS
Laying is fundamental for an excellent result. It is absolutely necessary to ensure that all
operations are carried out with accuracy by skilled professionals, creating oor and wall
coverings capable of lasting for many years. We would like to mention here some points
concerning the application of porcelain wall and oor tiles.

PRELIMINARY OPERATIONS
It is important to check that you have sufcient materials to complete the job. Moreover, it is
a good thing to have one or two boxes for cut tiles and for accidental breakages and one or
two boxes for the owner to keep, so that the owner can resolve any need that may arise in
the future. The boxes must be stacked no higher than 4 by 4 to avoid the risk of breaking tiles.
You always have to check the materials before laying. Inspect them to ensure that there are
no visible defects. Then dry lay a couple of square metres of tiles to check and reconrm the
overall effect.
Prior to laying tiles, the surface to be covered should be examined to ensure a stable base: it
must be level, dry, smooth and clean. If the surfaces are not absolutely vertical/horizontal,
you must get a stone mason to correct all of the irregularities.

LAYING
For a better result, take tiles from different boxes alternately to avoid any slight differences in
tone and size becoming very evident.
After choosing the most appropriate adhesive and preparing it properly following the
manufacturers instructions, spread the adhesive on the ground by using a straight-edged
spatula and then comb it with the toothed side.
For larger than 30x30 cm formats, oors subject to heavy pedestrian trafc and external uses,
it is advisable to use the double-glued technique that means distribute the xing material on
the ground and put a ne cover on the back side of the tile.
This practice prevents the creation of voids that could lead to breakage. Joints allow the oor
- (wall-) system to settle and adapt to technical-structural variations in the building, and for
this reason small joints are suggested also for rectied tiles.

In order to ensure that the joints are well aligned, the tiles should be tted with the help of
cross guides (there are several types of cross guides that can be removed and re-used) and/
or wedges. Regarding laying outdoor, in addition, individual national laws may require specic
characteristics (eg. anti-slip properties): select between collections materials which comply
with the relevant regulations for the specic case.
Finally, to check that tiles have been well tted, make a sound test. If a tile is tapped and a
hollow sound is heard, this means that this tile is not correctly tted and the adhesive was not
spread out properly. When laying the tile, it is preferable to use adhesive instead of cement.

GROUTING THE JOINTS

Joints must be grouted at least 24-48 hours after the tiles are laid. The joints must be
completely clean throughout their entire body. The underside and edges of the tile must be
accurately soaked.
The grouting must be performed with grouts from reputed manufacturers available in the
market. The joints are normally grouted with rubber spatulas, letting the grout penetrate the
depths. Rectified tiles must be installed with minimum 2mm grout lines.
Everything is left to dry. When the sealant starts to take hold, the excess should then be
removed with a wet sponge.It is recommended not to use sand or sawdust that digs into and
removes the grout that is still fresh from the joints.

FINAL CLEANING OF THE FLOOR AFTER LAYING

After installation, residues of mortar, cement, grout or adhesives, often not visible to the
naked eye, are always left on the oor.
These materials make the oor less attractive and may trap dust and dirt. About 36-48 hours
after grouting is nished, the cleaning must be carried out using a descaling detergent in
accordance with the manufacturers instructions.
Generally the detergent, diluted in water, must be applied to clean areas of a few square
metres at a time, after which each area should be abundantly rinsed and then dried.

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE SUGGESTIONS

The quality of porcelain tiles covering depends not only on good design and correct laying,
but also on the care that will be addressed to the surfaces. In order to highlight the aesthetic
features of the materials and ensure that the surface maintains its original beauty, we
recommend you to observe some basic precautions as regards maintenance, cleaning and
protection.

DURING BUILDING WORK

Once the tiles have been installed it will be necessary to provide adequate protection against
possible damages during subsequent work, covering them with cardboard, thick plastic or a
layer of sawdust.

FIRST CLEANING
The most important cleaning operation has to be performed immediately after the tiles have
been set and before the oor is used.It is essential to clean the tiles accurately the rst time
in order to highlight their aesthetic characteristics and guarantee that they are easy to clean
and stain resistant. If a surface layer of grout remains on the tiles, the oor will tend to get
dirty more quickly.
In this phase, it is advisable to apply an acid-based detergent to small surfaces as per the
concentration recommended by the manufacturer.Then let it soak for a few minutes before
removing it with a rough cloth. It is necessary and essential to rinse the surface with plenty of
clean water.Before proceeding with this type of activity, it is advisable to carry out a resistance
test on a small surface area of the material so as to not damage the entire surface.
To prevent the acid-based product from corroding the cement-based joint ller, wet the oor
prior to cleaning so that the joints are impregnated and thus protected from the corrosive
action of the acid.
If the rst cleaning is performed after the oor has been used, before applying the acidbased product it is advisable to remove any greasy or similar substances using right cleaning
products.

ORDINARY CLEANING
Customary cleaning eliminates dirt, marks or footprints and reinforces the protective layer in
case of wear.Surfaces should be cleaned with proper detergents that do not affect surfaces
and glazes. It is therefore appropriate to avoid using acid based or aggressive cleaners.
Grs porcellanato is a very tough material with particularly high resistance to chemicals and
frost. It is also waterproof and it does not retain stains of any type. For everyday cleaning, it
is sufcient to wash the oor with water and detergents for ceramic surfaces.
The use of warm water helps to increase the cleaning process efciently.Nevertheless,
persistent stains that are difcult to remove with normal cleaning may be eliminated with the
appropriate use of stronger and more concentrated cleaning products, capable of removing
heavier dirt and restoring the original appearance of the tiles. It is very important to identify
the type of stain and use the suitable cleaner, so it is advisable to chose the appropriate
detergent reading the label with attention.
Grs porcellanato is resistant to all chemicals, with the exception of hydrouoric acid, which
is harmful to all ceramic products. It is appropriate to avoid rubbing surfaces with abrasive
materials such as metal pads or hard brushes that can scratch or leave marks on the surface.
Grs porcellanato may undergo an industrial polishing process that produces the polished
type, which has a mirror nish. Unlike the natural (i.e. unpolished) material, it presents
some stainability problems: the polishing process, in fact, opens the pores of the porcelain
stoneware, making it easier for dirt to penetrate.
In addition, polished surfaces suffer with the passage of time a process of opacication. So, it
is important to distinguish between cleaning and protection for polished and for natural
material.
For commercial and heavily used surface areas such as airports, hospitals, supermarkets and
any public spaces which are subject to considerable soiling, it is necessary to use automatic
cleaning machines with suction of the washing liquids. This allows not only deep cleaning but
also the continuous removal of liquids containing substances that cause soiling.

EXTRA ORDINARY CARE PROCEDURE

When the original treatment has been heavily damaged or is very old, or if treatment care
procedures have not been carried out correctly, it is necessary to perform an exceptional
care procedure. In these cases, old treatments or old layer of care wax have to be removed
and then restored. Before using the appropriate product for this operation, it is advisable to
perform a test on a small part of the surface.

PROTECTION
The aim of the preservation process is to raise a barrier to prevent the oor from becoming
dirty and enhance the materials appearance. However, to preserve the genuine beauty of the
oor as long as possible, it is advisable to protect the entrance to the room, especially if it is
in direct contact with outdoor area, using a doormat that will as much as possible hold back
dust or other abrasive substances.
Ultimately, particular care should be given to the maintenance of joints, which are more
delicate and absorbing than the tiles themselves. For this reason, we suggest to cover the
area around the sink in kitchens or in bathrooms with special grouts able to protect joints and
increase their waterproof properties.
In case coloured joint llers are used in oor tiles, light colours are not recommended for
entrance areas or kitchen oors because they get dirty easily.

TYPOLOGIES

SUPERFICIAL FINISHINGS

GLAZED PORCELAIN
Glazed porcelain tiles have a layer of colored glaze which is applied on the tile surface during
the manufacturing process. These tiles are resistant to stains and water, easy to clean and
hard-wearing, making them good for kitchen counter tops, bathrooms, living rooms and hightraffic residential areas.

NATURAL
An extremely compact crystallized surface obtained using an innovative production technique
that makes it possible to obtain an unglazed product devoid of porosity, with passing veins and
without the application of vitried or crystalline glaze.

TECHNICAL PORCELAIN
Technical porcelain tiles have exceptional technical characteristics since they are crafted using
best quality clays and a full body color. They are ideal for buildings, villas, shopping centers,
retail shops, hotels, and many other commercial and residential applications.
SOLUBLE SALTS
Contain aquatic compounds of inorganic salts that are applied on the surface of the tile.
DOUBLE CHARGE
SALT & PEPPER
Produced utilizing a dosing system technology that mixes various color pigments with the
body slip resulting in a dot-like appearance. These models are commonly used for industrial
and high-traffic areas.
CHROMA
Designed using the Chroma machine from LB, these full-body tiles have exceptional veined
and varied color effects.
UNICOLOR
Have the same technical features as soluble salts however these models are full-body single
colored.

MATT
Opaque surface, not reecting; on glazed tiles it is due to a special composition that absorbs
the light creating surfaces without reections.
LAPPATO
Particularly soft to touch surface of relative brilliance, obtained by a mechanical action that
does not remove material in a homogeneous way, but only acts on certain areas, to create
partially polished zones.
POLISHED
The natural porcelain-body product is subject to the action of polishing springs that remove
part of the surface to make it perfectly glossy and reective. This nishing exalts the aesthetic
characteristics of the material by increasing the brilliance and elegance, out-beating the shine
of natural marble.
GLOSSY
Through the application of glazes to the ceramic support before ring, we get very reective
and shiny surfaces, until obtaining almost a mirror effect. This type of processing allows us to
offer our customers high-value products that can equal Porcelain nishing.

R SLIP RESITANCE
In its simplest sense, a slip resistant surface is one that allows a person to walk across it
without the risk of slipping.
The slip resistance coefcients indicated by R values refer to the German standard DIN
51130, which classies products according to end-use requirements, shown in ascending
order of risk, with particular reference to industrial and commercial environments.
The values range from R9 for materials that pass the rst level of the test, to R13 for materials
recommended for industrial use in particular.

R9 = person slips between 6-10 angle of elevation. Low static friction.

R10 = person slips between 10-19 angle of elevation. Normal static friction.

R11 = person slips between 19-27 angle of elevation. Increased static friction.

R12 = person slips between 27-35 angle of elevation. High static friction.

R13 = person slips more than 35 angle of elevation. Very high static friction.

The durability of a tiles glaze can be measured, subjectively, by observing the visible surface
of the tile when subjected to this test. Usually an abrasive pad is ground against the tile for
a period of time. The amount of damage done to the glaze is recorded and assigned a PEI
rating of #1-#5.
CLASS 1: Generally not recommended for use on oors.
CLASS 2: Residential oor coverings in areas subject to soft-soled to normal footwear trafc

with no scratching dirt. Domestic bathroom and bedrooms without exterior
access. (Light trafc)
CLASS 3: Residential oor coverings in areas subject to soft-soled to normal footwear

trafc with small amounts of scratching dirt. Rooms in living areas of homes

except kitchens, entrances, and other areas that may be subject to high trafc.

AESTHETICS
SHADE VARIATION
Variations in size, colour, texture, and pattern should be expected. This distinguishing
characteristics of tile is a source of its natural beauty.
V1 = UNIFORM APPEARANCE

Minimal differences among pieces from the same production run.
V2 = SLIGHT VARIATION

Slight difference in texture and/or pattern among similar colours.
V3 = MODERATE APPEARANCE

Light to moderate shade and texture variation among pieces from the same carton.

While the same colours are found on all tiles, the quantity of a particular colour on each

piece may vary signicantly.
V4 = RANDOM VARIATION

Very high shade and texture variation among pieces from the same carton, random

colour differences from tile to tile. One tile may have totally different colour from those

of another tile.
