Women constitute about 48% of the total population of the country.

But, in employment
market, out of the 459.1 million employed population in 2004-2005, women are only
about 148 million. Even of this, only about 5 million women are in organized sector
while remaining 143 million are in un-organized sector.

Realizing that the process of social development has to take into account the needs,
interests and viewpoints of both men & women alike; and looking at the situation of
women, gender inequalities and inequities that existed, special gender specific
programmes were formulated and organized to mainstream women into economic
activities.

The WOMENS VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMME at Ministry of Labour &


Employment, Directorate General of Employment and Training (DGE&T) was
designed and launched in 1977. The programme attempts to promote the women
employment in industry (mainly organized sector) as semi-skilled/skilled & highly skilled
workers by increasing their participation in skill training facilities under Craftsmen
Training Scheme and Craft Instructors Training Scheme. Programme also offers higher
skill training for the Instructors of various skill training organizations. To achieve this
objective women exclusive Institutes have been set up.

Our Aims & Objectives:-

planning, designing, executing and pursuing long-term policies for vocational training of
women in areas having wage/self employability; thereby increasing womens
participation in economic & social development of the country;

drawing plans and schemes for promoting participation of women in vocational training;
identification of vocational skill training areas;
sensitizing social environment through publicity campaigns

Regional Vocational Training Institute for Women, Bangalore:


The Institute, set up in 1977, is centrally located at Bangalore. The Institute has an
active interaction with the industrial units in the vicinity and offers hostel facility.

Under the Womens Vocational Training programmes, institutionalized skill training is


being offered to women in Craftsmen Training Scheme(CTS) and Craft Instructors
Training Scheme(CITS).

The Women Target Group (for Regular Training) are :for Craftsmen Training Scheme:- Minimum age: 14 years; Upper age: No Bar

Minimum Qual.: Pass in 10th/12th class under 10+2 system, depending on the training
area opted;
for Craft Instructors Training Scheme:- women having National Trade Certificate (NCVT)
in relevant trade (Upper age: No Bar);
Short-term need-based courses conducted as per demand
The admission to these courses are held as follows:Courses under CTS- July every year. Classes generally commence in August
Courses under CITS- Advertisement is generally released in June. Training is conducted
on modular pattern with admission every 3/4 months depending on the type of
module/course available in each institute.

News along with advertisement for admission.

The Vocational Training Programmes under CTS are implemented by the Union
Territories/State Governments and the Central Government.
Vocational Training Programme for women - State Sector:Under the State Sector, the vocational training is organised through a network of
Women ITI/private women ITIs/Women Wings in General ITIs, which are directly under
the administrative control of the respective State Governments.
Training facilities are being offered in engineering & non-engineering skill courses under
the Craftsmen Training Scheme. Training seats sanctioned per unit is limited to 16 seats
in most trades and the training programmes are scheduled as August to July.
Directorate General of Employment & Training, Ministry of Labour & Employment lays
down policies and standards of training, prepares curricula, conducts trade tests and
awards certificates.

through a network of 11 Institutes - one National Vocational Training Institute For


Women & ten Regional Vocational Training Institutes For Women (RVTIs) .

Certificate would be issued at institute level)
Short term need-based courses are also organized in the NVTI/RVTIs in various skill
areas. The duration of these courses generally varies from one to eight weeks
The curriculum for the training courses are designed in consultation with the industry,
and are modified as and when required.
