Study in the heart of the capital

KIC London is based in the heart of Englands famous capital city. It benefits from excellent
train, bus and Underground links to the rest of London, as well as many local facilities including
shops, restaurants and cafs. It is also only a ten-minute walk from City University London.

London is made
up of two ancient
cities: the City of
London (which is
the financial centre)
and the City of
Westminster (which
is the political centre)
and 31 boroughs
Each borough is
formed of distinct
areas that have their
own character, so
that London feels
like many colourful,
unique towns all
joined together

The great eighteenth century English writer

Dr Samuel Johnson famously observed,
A man who is bored of London is bored
of Life. Today, London remains one of the
most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities in the
world and offers international students an
experience they will find truly unforgettable.
As a resident rather than a tourist, London
will become your city. Its wealth of amenities,
leisure facilities, world famous visitor
attractions and vibrant night life will be yours
to use and enjoy.
London is a multicultural city which has
become home to communities worldwide.

Over 300 languages are spoken by Londons

residents, and the city has around 6,000
restaurants with menus from more than 70
countries and regions, so as an international
visitor, you will quickly feel at home.
London is a city that reflects 2,000 years of
history but looks firmly to the future. It has a
rich cultural and architectural heritage but is
one of the worlds leading financial centres.
Furthermore, as the host city for the 2012
Olympic Games, this is a particularly exciting
time to live in London as the city gears up for
one of the worlds biggest sporting events.

Formerly the Northampton Institute, City

University London gained its Royal Charter
in 1966 becoming The City University.
International students from over 150
countries now make up a third of the
Universitys population. This means the
University is cosmopolitan and welcoming
while being committed to attracting and
supporting high quality and talented

City is committed to meeting the changing
educational needs of individuals, employers
and society. Its courses are designed to

their areas of choice.
City is also committed to investment in
its buildings and facilities. 2009 saw the

after a 12m refurbishment, as well as the
opening of the Finkelstein Laboratory used
in undergraduate teaching and final year
project work across all of Citys Electrical,
Electronic and Information Engineering
courses. The University library now offers
an even better mix of the latest information

after a phased refurbishment.

International students
City University London has a diverse and multicultural student body and you are sure to feel at
home as an international student. Here two international students share their experiences.
Im in my third year studying Psychology
and am really enjoying my course. Its good
to know how the mind works and how to
apply it to human behaviour.
I chose City as it was a reputed university
and it offers good opportunities job-wise
afterwards.
As an international student its great to
meet people from different cultures and
walks of life.
Kerina Richards, Jamaica

The best part of my experience at City has

been the people I have met. At any one
time, I am sitting at a table with students
from Asian, African and European countries.
Working with students from diverse
backgrounds has enriched my experience
and I know that I have made lifelong friends
no matter where in the world our careers
take us.
The rich student life is very appealing, and
one cannot prevent oneself from engaging
in the activities, lectures and events. City is
stimulating, cosmopolitan and very much
a part of the real world. Im really willing
to apply what I have learned here in the
future.

Introduction to our teaching

You can trust Kaplan International College London to help you get the best possible results
in your studies. Kaplan has been helping students to do so for over 70 years, ever since
the company was established by a school teacher in New York. We believe this expertise in
personalised academic support will maximise your chances of success at university.

Academic support

Teaching time

At KIC London we recognise that

international students may need some extra
support to help them get the most from their
studies. We prepare students for studying in
the UK education system by teaching how to
take notes effectively, avoiding plagiarism,
research skills, essay writing and more.

To complete our programmes, you will need

to make a serious academic commitment.
As well as plenty of contact time with your
tutors in class, you are also expected to
undertake a minimum of eight hours selfstudy each week for every module you study.

Learning Support Tutors

We assign every student a Learning Support
Tutor who you will meet with regularly.
They will monitor your progress and give
you extra help where you need it to make
sure that nothing gets in the way of your
progression to university. KIC London also
has a student support team to help with
non-academic queries.

Small class sizes

We use small teaching groups instead of
large lecture theatres. This means you get
lots of attention from teaching staff. You will
quickly develop a comfortable relationship
with your tutors and classmates.

English language support

KIC London offers its students a broad range
of English language teaching, so you can
develop your English skills while you study.
For students who need extra help with
their English, Kaplan International Colleges
runs Pre-Sessional English programmes
in London, offering intensive English
preparation.

Monitoring progress
We monitor our students progression
closely and provide feedback so that you
know what areas you need to improve
on and where your strengths lie. This

After you submit

your application
If your application is successful you will
receive an offer letter. The offer letter
will be for both your programme at KIC
London and your degree course at the
partner university.
Your offer will be either an unconditional
offer or a conditional offer. An
unconditional offer means there are
no academic or English language
conditions to fulfil. All you have to do is
accept your offer and pay your deposit
in order to reserve a place on your
programme.
A conditional offer means there
are academic or English language
conditions which you must fulfil before
you can apply for a visa or enrol at the
College. The offer letter will detail these
conditions but if you have any questions
please contact the Application and
Admissions Centre or your local Kaplan
representative office.

Step 1: Ensure you have

sufficient funds
To study in the UK you must be able
to prove you have sufficient funds for
your monthly maintenance or living
expenses. This will be equivalent to
800 for every month of your KIC London
programme (up to a maximum of nine
months) plus any outstanding tuition
fees. You must hold this amount in a
recognised bank for at least 28 days
prior to applying for a visa.

Step 2: Accept your offer

To accept your offer, return the offer
acceptance form at the back of your
offer letter and pay the required deposit.
The deposit may be paid by bank draft,
payable to Kaplan International College
London, or by direct transfer. Please
quote your student reference number in
the reference field when paying.
If you are a sponsored student (for
example by a government body), please
send us your financial guarantee so we
can confirm your place.
Upon receiving the deposit, we will
email you a receipt and the Confirmation
of Acceptance for Study (CAS), which
contains a unique reference number and
is used for your student visa application.
You will also receive the accommodation
preference form and the arrivals form.
If your offer was conditional, the CAS
will be dispatched as soon as you
provide evidence of having met the
conditions of your offer.

Step 3: Apply for a student visa

Once you have your CAS along with
evidence that you have the course fees
and sufficient funds to live, submit your
visa application with original documents
required demonstrating your English
and Academic level at your local British
Embassy or High Commission.

Information for parents

As a parent, you will have your childs best interests at heart: their happiness, their safety,
their education and their future. We provide students with the support they need to get the
most out of studying in the UK. If you have any queries, please get in touch.

Why study in the United Kingdom?

What will my child eat?

A degree from a leading UK university

will set your child apart from others and
open up opportunities for them that they
otherwise may not have. As well as the
academic excellence provided by our
partner universities, your child will benefit
from gaining an international perspective in
the UK.

A benefit of living in a big UK city is that it

is easy to find a variety of foods. Cuisine
from around the world is available in
nearby restaurants and supermarkets,
and vegetarian and halal food is widely
available. If your child lives in halls of
residence they will have access to a kitchen
so that they can cook their own food.

Is KIC London trust-worthy?

Will my child get homesick?

KIC London is BAC accredited and its

programmes are quality approved by our
prestigious partner universities.

It is likely that your child will miss being

home initially, but we do everything we can
to make your child feel comfortable. During
induction we will help your child adapt
to life in the UK. They will meet staff and
students and social events are arranged
so that it is easy to make friends, and your
child will be kept busy and entertained.

The College is part of Kaplan, Inc., which

is a leading global provider of educational
services for individuals, schools and
businesses in 36 countries. Kaplan has
been established for over 70 years and is
one of the largest providers of academic
English language training in the world.

What are the costs?

For up-to-date information on fees and living
expenses please visit
www.kiclondon.org.uk/tuitionfees

Will my child be safe?

We cant monitor your child all of the time,
but we will do our utmost to ensure their
safety while they are studying in the UK.
See pages 12, 32 and 33 for information
on your childs safe arrival in the UK, their
accommodation options and the ongoing
support that KIC London offers its students.

Can my child practise their religion?

London is the UKs biggest city, so it is easy
to find places of worship locally. During your
childs induction, the Student Services team
will provide information on local religious
services. Our staff members are very
considerate and will, wherever possible,
allow students time for prayer.

How will my child keep in contact?

Keeping in contact with your child is
straightforward. Email and the internet
provide cheap and easy ways to stay in
touch, and international phone cards can
help keep costs low as well. The UK postal
system is reliable, so if you prefer to write
letters, this is an option.

When can I see my child?

You can visit your child at any time, and
they will be able to visit you during breaks
between terms. The longest break is usually
in August and September, so this is an ideal
time for your child to return home, or for you
to visit them.

How do I find out more?

To find out more please call us or send us an
email. For contact details see the back cover
of this brochure. Alternatively you can find
