Introduction

Since 1972, Madras Industrial Products have been manufacturing and supplying gaskets
for Heat Exchangers, Pressure Vessels and piping connections in Refineries, Fertilizers,
Petrochemicals, Chemicals, Process Plants, Atomic Energy, Oil Fields, Navy, Ship
Building Industries, Railways and other Process Industries. Gaskets are supplied for both
Project installations and maintenance replacements. MIP supplies gaskets meeting
customers requirements of size, pressure, temperature, shape and material. MIPs record
of steady growth has been due to the dedication to produce highest quality and reliable
gaskets at competitive prices.
MIP Gaskets are approved by renowned consultants like EIL, PDIL, UHDE, Tata
Consultants, Davy Powergas, NPC, ICB, Simon carves, Humphreys and Glasgow
etc. and inspecting organizations like Lloyds, Bureau veritas, EIL, Detnorske
Veritas etc.

High quality Spiral Wound Gaskets have proved to be the most reliable static seal for use
in difficult, critical and arduous conditions MIP. Spiral Wound Gaskets have the
following inherent advantages
Positive seal under
exacting conditions:

MIP superior configuration design of the metal strips,

gives innate resilience that permits the gasket to adjust
automatically to change in operating conditions such as line
pressure and thermal shocks, frequent or sudden vibrations,
minor flange separations, fluctuating temperatures and
pressures and works in almost all known toxic and
corrosive fluids with a suitable combination of metal and
filler.

Fitment & easy

installation:

Less downtime as fitment is quick and simple. No special

flange face finish is required. Can even be used where the
flanges are misaligned or pitted. These gaskets do not stick
with the flange faces nor cause corrosion thus avoiding
expensive cleaning time.

Controlled compressibility: Compression depends upon the density of the gasket which
is varied according to the pressure application by changing
the percentage of metal to filler in any given flange width.
This ensures constant gasket stress at all times when
installed.
Materials:

Types:

Strip: Stainless Steel 304,304L, 316,316L, 321, 410, Monel,

Inconel, etc.
Filler: CAF, Acid Resistance CAF, White Asbestos, PTFE, Graf
oil etc.(Graphite tape uncrimped )
Outer ring: Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel 304,316 etc.
Conforming to API 601, BS 3381, BS 4504, BS 4865, BS
3293, API 605, MSS SP-44, DIN, Admiralty, DGS 8851A
etc. and to customers specifications.
MIP Spiral Wound gaskets are manufactured in dimensions
from 1/4 to 96 and thickness from 1/8 to 3/8 Generally,
gasket thickness is 0.175 and outer ring thickness is
0.125.
MIP Spiral Wound gaskets are manufactured in Round,
obround, square, oval, Diamond and pear shapes.
MIP Spiral Wound gaskets are manufactured with inner
and outer ring, with Inner ring only, with outer ring only
and without rings as per buyers requirements.

Gaskets with Outer ring:

This is a standard spiral Wound gasket consisting of

a sealing element and a solid metal outer ring. The
outer ring performs the following important functions.
(a) Centre the gaskets in the joint. (b) Furnishes extraradial strength to help prevent gasket blow out. (c)
Resists atmospheric conditions. (d) Provides a gauge
reference point for determining compression during
bolt pull up. This type of gasket is used in (1) Raised
face and Raised Face slip-on joints (2) Plain or flat
face joints (3) Van Stone Joints (4) Lapped joints and
(5) Welding neck flanged joints.

Gaskets with inner & Outer The outer ring serves as a centering guide and the
inner ring fills the flange recess to prevent fluid from
rings:
entering the recess and reduces turbulent flow of the
fluid. The inner ring converts one of a pair of smooth
face flanges into a groove flange providing all the
safety of a totally contained gasket restricting lateral
flow of gasket inwards towards the bore. It
supplements the compression gauge of the outer ring.
Acts as a heat and corrosion barrier protecting gasket
winding and flanges. Suitable for use with flat face
and raised face and recommended for high pressure
temperature service particularly where corrosive or
toxic fluids are involved. Highly suitable for vacuum
services also.
Gaskets without rings:

These are suitable for large tongue & groove joints,

small tongue and groove joints, large male & female
joints. Recommended for valves and high pressure
pumps. Highly suitable for use where limited gasket
sealing width is available.

Gaskets with inner ring only :

Inner solid metal ring fitted with sealing element gives

all the advantages as explained earlier in Gaskets with
Inner and Outer rings. This type is suitable for
pressure vessels, Pumps, Boiler Manholes, Caps,
covers etc.

Gaskets with Jacketed rib :

Construction of the gasket of this type will have

sealing element with the metal clad asbestos, solid
metal pass ribs for use in Heat Exchangers and
Pressure vessels. These gaskets are always designed to
customers specific requirements.

Flange surfaces:

MIP Gaskets when compressed, the filler material

protected by the metal strip flows into undulations and
minor imperfections in the flange surface. Hence the
compressive force required on the gasket is
proportionate to the flange surface finish.
As a general guide, we suggest the surface finish of
flange face as given in the adjacent table on gaskets
selected.
Superfine or polished surface finish should be avoided
since the gasket will have a lateral expansion and will
be ineffective as a seal. A gramophone or concentric
serrated finish is preferable.

Quality Control:

Our gaskets undergo various exhaustive quality control tests. We have

an in-built quality control procedure, visual and dimensional checks on
all the manufactured gaskets and final compression. Compression
Recovery and Seal ability check on gaskets selected on a statistical
sampling technique. In addition, high pressure, high temperature
cyclical conditions seal ability check is also carried out.
All raw materials are checked for composition and other properties. All
the measuring instruments and testing equipments are subjected to
periodic calibration.

Installation and
Maintenance Guidance:

How to Order MIP gaskets:

(a) Always use the right type of gasket intended for the specific joint.
(b) Always clean dirt and scale from recess and groove of flanges.
(c) Never re-use spiral wound gaskets if thickness of used spiral wound
gasket averages less than 0.145 of gaskets with original thickness
of 0.175 or 0.112 of gaskets with original thickness of 0.125
(d) Never take tightness of joint for granted when faces just come
together metal to metal. It is essential to sung up bolts sufficiently
to keep flanges from being spread apart by pressure of contained
fluids.
(e) Always lubricate bolts with lubricants compatible with operating
conditions.
The following details are to be given by the purchaser :
1. Nominal Pipe size, Pressure rating and Operating
Temperature.
2. Type of the gaskets.
3. Thickness of the gasket.
4. Material of the centering ring.
5. Flange Standard.
6. Service Medium.
It is necessary to mention the specification standard of
gaskets at the time of making enquiries. If the requirement
is to purchasers specifications, the relevant drawings and
sketches should be forwarded.

Jacketed gaskets are extensively used on smooth flange applications and are ideal for Heat Exchangers,
Autoclaves, Columns, Boilers, Valve Bonnets, Gas Mains and similar services.
Construction:

Jacketed gaskets consist of a sheet metal jacket, and a filler of

asbestos, CAF of some layers of sheet metal. The jacket metal
should be as soft and as plastic as possible taking into account
the corrosiveness of the fluid to be sealed.
The filer material is chosen according to the imperfection of the
flange. The better the surface finish and the flatness of the face,
harder the filler can be.

Jacket material:

Soft iron, Copper Brass, Aluminum, SS304, 316, 316L, 321,

410, Monel, 5% Cr 1/2 % Mo, etc.

Filler:

Non-compressed asbestos, CAF, Woven asbestos, Teflon,

Ceramic Fiber, Graphite etc.

MIP Inner Metal Re-inforced CAF Gasket: The metal beading
protects attack of Inner Fluid giving a longer life and
performance.
MIP SS Reinforced CAF Teflon covered Gaskets:
The metal beading protects CAF from the attack of Acid and
other corrosive service fluids. In addition, all over the surface
CAF is protected by the inert Teflon thin envelops.
The construction of these gaskets completely prevents contact of
the service fluid with CAF.

Thermal Power Plants, Nuclear Reactors etc., in their High Pressure

Equipments or High Pressure Valves prefer self sealing plates than flange
joints. Self Sealing Rings are designed the internal pressure helps the precompression of the sealing rings, thereby offering very effective sealing.
In sealing rings the sealing force is brought about by the internal
pressure than by the bolts.
MIP self sealing rings are manufactured to the dimensional requirements to
suit internationally renowned High Pressure Valves.
MIP Self Sealing Rings are made out of soft iron with hardness 90 BHN
max. Sealing surfaces are maintained with 0.8 microns max. Finish. Other
phases are mainted to 3.2 microns max.
MIP Self Sealing Rings could be supplied with silver Coating on request.
Note: MIP Sealing rings and other special Metal Gaskets could be on request
supplied with a wax Coating which prevents the gasket from rusting due to
atmospheric conditions and also avoids scratching on the surface of the
gaskets.
We could supply Self Sealing Rings made out of compressed Asbestos
Graphite Coated or Pure Graphite which are generally used for lower
pressures.

Could be supplied in different materials, with or without facing

Lens gaskets
Lens Gaskets are with the radius on the sealing surface: Bolt load
required is comparatively less as contact surface with flange is
spherical.
Manufactured to DIN 2696 Std.
NW 10-400, ND 64-400 DIN Flanges
Delta gaskets
Round torroidal gaskets
Semi-round torroidal gaskets
Concentric serrated gaskets
Serrated gaskets are used mainly in high pressure joints. As the
serrated sharp edge of the gasket would damage the flange faces,
these gaskets are normally used with covering layers of CAF, soft
iron, Teflon, Aluminum etc. Normally the covering layer is 0.5 mm
to 1 mm thick. The serrated gasket serves as a support to develop
high contact pressures.
Available in 3mm thickness and above in Carbon steel, Stainless
steel etc.
Plain flat ring gaskets
Teflon solid and enveloped gaskets

Soft and shim gaskets

Gaskets made out of different grades of CAF, Millboard Asbestos etc.
to suit the service conditions. These are offered in all intricate shapes
maintaining dimensional accuracies.
Gaskets made out of shims in steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper,
brass etc.
