Question
How can I convert traditional HMI alarms to FactoryTalk Alarms and Events (A&E) Tag-Based alarms in FactoryTalk View SE?
Answer
There is a tool attached to this technote that will do the conversion and give you files to import.
Attached are the initial and subsequent releases of the Alarm Migration Tool and related documentation.
This tool migrates digital and analog alarms defined in the FactoryTalk View SE Tag/Alarm CSV files. The resulting file is an Excel file in XML spreadhseet format that can be
imported into your FactoryTalk Tag A&E server. This tool will not convert graphics and will not modify your application directly.
Release Notes
Release 1.2 b8, 17-JUL-2013 - Current version
Fixed issue where level alarms were sometimes importing with missing or incorrect level information
Added support for floating point level values
Note: You may still receive the below error message on import if your level values are floating point and when converted to integers would be identical (i.e. HIHI=2.4
and HI=2.1). This does not impact the importing of the actual data.
Cause: The limit for HIHI is higher than or equal to the HI limit.
Values must be within the range High High > High > Low > Low Low.

45583 Tool: Converting FactoryTalk View SE HMI Alarms to A&E Tag-Based Al... Pgina 2 de 2
Known Issues
You may need to manually add a leading :: to your tag addresses. In FactoryTalk View SE applications, device addresses for alarm definitions and scan rates may
require a leading :: before the RSLinx shortcut in order to work. The Alarm Migration Tool will not add :: in front of the address if they do not currently exist in the HMI tag
database. The Migration Tool does a 1:1 copy of whatever is currently defined. If your alarms do not work after the conversion, you may need to manually add the ::
before your tag addresses: i.e. [Controller]Tag1 vs. ::[Controller]Tag1.
You need to have Microsoft Excel installed on your system for the Migration Tool to work or the tool may generate a fatal error when trying to create the resulting XLS file
Please remove any commas from tag descriptions as the parser may have issues processing the description field and producing the output file
If your alarm message begins with the character = then you may get the below error when attempting to create the resulting XLS file.
Exception from HRESULT: 0x800A03EC
To work around this issue, after exporting, edit the alarm message in the resulting CSV file to remove the leading = character, import, then edit the alarm message in
FactoryTalk View Studio.
Please remove spaces from the Alarm Class
When using the option to set the HMI Alarm Label as the new Tag A&E Alarm Class, if any of the alarm labels contain spaces, the invalid string will be copied to the A&E
Alarm Class. The XLS import file will be created successfully, but the import will fail with the below error. Please use Excel to manually remove the space from the Alarm
Class column by using search and replace (search for " " and replace with nothing, or "_"), save the file, and try the import again.
Error creating xml data file: ' ', cause hexadecimal value 0x01, is an invalid character, line XX, position YY
