Test specification for oil compatibility with the gear inside coating
Aim is to control the gear inside paint resistance against the application of in future used gear
oils.
Every paint material has to use its own test log sheet. All done testings have to be registered
continously in a defined table.
test procedure
1) Preparation of the test panels (steel test panels type R-36, item number 71242, mat, dimension 76 x 152 mm,
company Q-Lab Deutschland GmbH) by degreasing with special-diluent butyl-acetate 98/100 or cleaner solvent.
2) Preparation of the paint system materials after recommendation in technical data sheets.
3) Coating of the prepared test panels practically oriented by dipping procedure or spray application.
4) Drying of the coated test panels for 10 days by air-drying at room temperature.
5) After drying of 10 days: Observation and check of the layer thickness under consideration of the defaults of at
least 40 m to at most 60 m by standard coatings and. 80 m to 100 m of the dry coat thickness by high solid
materials..
6) Realisation of pendulum hardness and cross-cut test for ascertainment of standard values (reference); multiplier
for conversion of swinging beam to seconds = 1,4.
7) Decanting of the oil into tin can (0,75 l); quantity : 400 gramme
8) Addition of 8 gramme tap-water and homogenization by dissolver for ca. two minutes.
9) Heating of the convection dryer up to the predetermined temperature of 100C.
10) The smaller tin can filled with oil (0,75 l) has to be put into a bigger one (2,5 l) for protective reason.

The bigger tin can (2,5 l) has to be prepared with holes at the
upper edge counter-sided.
The holes height should be chosen in consideration of the
hanging test panel which has to have a distance to the bottom
of the smaller tin can ( l) of ca. 1 cm.

11) Hanging of the prepared test panels into the tin can filled with oil, distance to the bottom about 1 cm, but 30% of
the test panels surface has to get in contact with the test substance (according oil-type); the bigger tin can has to be
shut by a detached lid.

12) This with test panels filled tin can system has to be put completly into the convection dryer
starts now for 168 hours under a temperature stress of 100C.

the testing period

13) After the testing period of 168 hours the test panels have to be evaluated optically; all determined changes will be
taken down in a journal sheet (see appendix test log):
Checking of the test panels surface area for blistering and detaching phenomenon (except the border area of 1 cm
all around).
If this optical check results in the tested gear inside paint is already destroyed, the evaluation at this point is: not
resistant.
Is a totally faultless negative evaluation not possible, than the testing period will be continued as follows:
14) The test panels filled tin can system has to be put back completly into the convection dryer again; heating up to the
temperature of 140C.
15) The testing period continues now for 48 hours under the thermal load of 140C.
16) At once after the testing time period of 48 hours run out the oil-touched areas of the test panels have to be cleansed
with turpentine substitute.
17) After that the test panels have to be dried and regenerated for the time period of 24 hours at room temperature.
18) After that second testing and regenerating period of 24 hours the test panels have to be evaluated optically again;
all determined changes will be taken down in a log sheet, too (see appendix test log)

19) Execution of cross-cut test after standard EN ISO 2409 and pendulum hardness (in seconds, conversion factor see
item 6) after standard EN ISO 1522 onto oil-loaded and unstressed surface areas of test panels.
20) Preparation of test log with following details:
a)

reference
layer-thickness, pendulum hardness, cross-cut test (see item 6)

b)

test panel (first test period after 168 hours)

determined changes onto oil-loaded surface areas (see item 13)

c)

test panel (second test period after 48 hours more)

pendulum hardness and cross-cut test onto oil-loaded and unstressed surface areas of test panels (see item
19)

21) The compatibility with the gear inside paint is given if pendulum hardness values of oil-loaded test panels are not
lower than 50% of the reference test panel values and cross-cut test values of oil-loaded test panels are not worser
than GT1.
