EMC VNX Procedure Generator

Initializing VNX for Block without Network Access

Because you typically do not have a connection to the customers network, the most common technique
used by the field is to setup a Local LAN on your laptop. This would be a connection between your laptop
and both Management ports of the Block array utilizing a hub/switch. The customer should have already
provided you with the IP addresses that will be applied to the arrays SPs so you will set your laptop up
with a dummy IP address similar to customers IP address that will be applied.
Note: This procedure assumes a VNX or VNX with MCX array is already installed, powered up and is
ready for initialization.
This procedure will provide the information required to setup your laptop and make the proper
connections to an uninitialized VNX for Block array so that the Unisphere Storage System Initialization
Tool may be run without using a customers management station or connecting your laptop to the
customers network.
Before you begin, you will need the management and login information in the Planning Worksheets of the
install guide. This information includes:
A static IP address for each storage processor in the system (for example, 123.45.6.7
The customers login and password assignment
The IPv6 global prefix and gateway for each SP if your network supports the IPv6 Internet Protocol
and you want to manually configure IPv6 for the management ports.
Ensure that any existing firewall, pop-up blockers and VPN is disabled on your PC
IMPORTANT: Check to see if there is security software running on your workstation/laptop such as
Cisco Security Agent that may prevent the uninitialized system from being detected. If there is, disable it
(Windows Services) and rerun the Initialization tool. Your laptop will need to be rebooted to stop the
service.

Task 1: Create a Local LAN

Note: The following is an EXAMPLE of a customers LAN setting and the IP addresses to use on the
Storage Processors. Do not use these to set the array! If they are the same it is merely a coincidence!
WARNING: Never connect to both Service LAN ports using a hub/switch as shown in Figure 2 as this will
cause a network storm and panic the SPs.
EXAMPLE: The customer wishes to set their SPs to 10.241.22.25 and 10.241.22.26
1. [ ] To connect your laptop to the arrays Management LAN port and you must first set your laptops
TCP / IP Properties.
2. [ ] Navigate to your Network Connections and select your Local Area Connection, the physical LAN
cable port on your laptop.
3. [ ] On the TCP/IP Properties page, click the Use the following IP address radio button.
4. [ ] Set your laptops TCP/IP properties to the IPs to any IP address close to what the SPs will be set
to. There is no need to worry about any conflicts or duplicate IP addresses as this is a Local
LAN.

Task 2: Connecting your Laptop to the VNX:

5. [ ] Connect the service laptop through a switch or hub to connect to both Management LAN Ports (A
and B) on the VNX5100, VNX5200, VNX5300, VNX5400, VNX5500, VNX5600, VNX5700, VNX7500
and VNX8000 array (Figure 2).

Task 3: Run the Unisphere Storage System Initialization Tool

Prior to starting the array initialization process, you should have:
Cisco Security Agent disabled
A dummy Local LAN IP address set on your laptops LAN port,
A hub/switch connected from your LAN port to both Management ports
All pertinent information regarding login, password, SP IP addresses and possibly IPV6 settings
A powered up and installed Block array.
Unisphere Storage System Initialization Tool installed on your laptop
6. [ ] Start the Unisphere Storage System Initialization Tool and discover your array. Following the
Wizard steps will properly complete the initialization process.
