ACTIVITY 1 5'
Match the two parts of these expressions.
a) Tell students to try to match the two parts of each expression before checking with the
story .Go through the answers.

ACTIVITY 2 10'
Translate the expressions into your own language.
b) Students translate the expressions in pairs. Explain that some of them are only used
informally, and ask students to say which they think they are.(Go on, It'll be laugh, Let's do it, If
you like). Point out the structure. What + a + adj + noun in What a great idea! This can be used
to generate other expressions like What a beautiful day!
ACTIVITY 3 10'
Choose suitable expressions to complete these dialogues.
c) Students complete the dialogues and practice saying them with a partner. Get six pairs to read
them out in turn for the rest of the class.

ACTIVITY 4 10'
Ask students What is Mel going to do? to elicit, e.g. She is going to send her designs to a fashion

show. Tell them that Katy and Dan helped Mel decided to do it , i.e. they persuaded her. Ask
what different things they did to do this. Ask students to look back, in pairs, and find out what

they said. Draw attention to the expression Why don't you show some of your designs? Ask
what the function of What don't you ...? is (to make suggestion).What other expressions can
students find which are part of the art of persuasion?

Dan says: You've got plenty of time.
Katy says: We'll help you.

b) Teacher asks What are they going to try to do now? To elicit They are going to try to
persuade Rich to become a model. Do students think that will be difficult? Why? Ask a few
students to think about themselves. Would it to be difficult to persuade them? Read the three
questions with the class. Ask how the others might persuade Rich. (Tell them to remember he
wants to make a lot of money and he likes food.) Divide students into groups of four to begin
the task. Walk around the class giving help where needed. Allow plenty of time for this activity.
Get the best groups to act out the scene.
