Electromagnetic Induction
Directions: Use the simulation Faradays Electromagnetic Lab (in the Electricity, Magnetism,
and Circuits section) on the website http://phet.colorado.edu to complete this paper.
Bar Magnet Tab General Magnetism
1. Click on the Bar Magnet Tab and you should see a bar magnet and compass on the
screen. Please note that the color red refers to North and white refers to South. Place the
compass at the North end of the bar magnet and observe which way the red tip of the
compass points. Move the compass to the South end and observe where the red tip of
the compass points. What can you say about where the north (red) tip of a compass
points?
The north tip is pointing toward the south end of the magnets always in the direction of the
magnetic field.
2. Use your response to #1 to explain why the geographic north pole is the magnetic south
pole.
The north tip of our compasses points to the south end of the magnet which is earth. As a
result, since the compass points north, the north pole must actually be the magnetic south
pole.

3. Set the number of loops to 1 and note what happens to the light bulb when
The magnet is not moving and is not in the loop Nothing
The magnet is moving and is not in the loop It lights up but is very dim
The magnet is not moving and is in the loop Nothing
The magnet is moving and is in the loop It lights up and is brighter
4. Does the speed of the magnet affect your results to #3? If so, describe how.
Yes, the faster the magnet moves, the brighter the bulb is. The slower the magnet, the dimmer
the bulb is when the magnet moves. When the magnet doesnt move, the light bulb remains
dim
5. Increase the number of loops to 3 and see if it affects your results from #3. If so,
describe how.
The bulb gets brighter when the magnet moves. It remains unchanged otherwise.

Transformer Tab Can We Use Electromagnetism?

6. The last tab showed us that current can create a magnetic field. Can this magnetic field
generate electricity? That is, can we use electricity to generate more electricity? Move the
electromagnetic back and forth and note what happens.
Yes, the electromagnet functions just like a normal magnet. Therefore, we can use it to
generate electricity in the same way that we use regular magnets.
7. Change to an AC source. Note what happens while the electromagnet is not moving.
Why does the light bulb light up? Do the electrons in the light bulb move as fast as the AC
source?
The light bulb lights up even though the electromagnet is not moving. This happens because
the alternating current is changing the magnetic filed which induces a current in the second
circuit. The electrons do not move as fast when the electromagnet is away from the bulb
circuit, however, when the electromagnet is inside the bulb circuit, their electrons move faster.
Generator Tab Putting it All Together
8. Turn on the water faucet and describe what happens.
The water rotates the magnet, which changes the magnetic flux in the coil, inducing an
alternating current in the light bulb making it light up on and off.
9. Increase and decrease the RPM of the wheel by changing the amount of water coming
out of the faucet. Describe what happens.
The faster the water pours, the brighter the light bulb lights up and the faster the period of
lighting is.
