Dear North Star Parents and Community Members:

Starting last spring, the State Board of Education required all Utah students in third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade
to take new state tests. The tests, called SAGE (Student Assessment of Growth and Excellence), were designed
to measure more challenging state standards in mathematics, English language arts, and science. They are
completely different from former statewide tests. Therefore, SAGE and CRT (Criterion Reference Test)
results cannot be compared.
Please keep in mind:

North Star is working diligently to prepare students to meet the new rigorous SAGE requirements.
SAGE testing is completely new and the format of the questions is far more complex than before.
There is a dramatic increase in rigor and expectations for students, therefore SAGE scores are lower than
CRT scores. Put simply, the students are expected to understand concepts and demonstrate a greater
depth of knowledge in their answers than in years past.

If your child took the SAGE test last spring, you will receive a copy of their progress report with this letter.
We encourage families to visit the following sites for more information, sample test questions, or for resources to
support student learning.

Queridos Padres y miembros de la comunidad de North Star:
Durante la primavera pasada, el Consejo Escolar del Estado requiri que todos los estudiantes de Utah en
grados tres, cuatro, cinco, y seis tomara nuevos exmenes del estado. Los exmenes, llamados SAGE
(Valoracin del Crecimiento y la Excelencia del Estudiante), fueron diseados a medir estndares ms
desafiantes en la matemtica, los artes del leguaje de ingls, y la ciencia. Son completamente diferentes de los
exmenes del estado anteriores. Por tanto, los resultados de los SAGE y CRT (Examen de Referencia
Criterio) no se pueden comparar.
Por favor tenga en la mente que:

North Star est trabajando diligentemente para preparar a los estudiantes a cumplir con los requeridos
rigurosos nuevos de SAGE.
Los exmenes SAGE son completamente nuevos, y el formato de las preguntas es mucho ms complejo
que antes.
Hay un aumento dramtico en el rigor y las expectativas para los estudiantes, por tanto los resultados
del SAGE son ms bajos que los del CRT. Dicho simplemente, se espera que los estudiantes entiendan
conceptos y demuestren un conocimiento ms profundo en sus respuestas en comparacin a los aos
pasados.

Si su hijo tom el examen SAGE en la primavera pasada, usted recibir una copia de su reporte de progreso con
esta carta.

examen, o recursos para apoyar el aprendizaje de su estudiante.
