NARRATIVE REPORT

Pediatric ward is one of the busiest ward in the hospital. Preparing

medications, making nursing rounds, charting and the like are one of the crucial
activities inside this busy area. You cannot underestimate the heat and the
different scenarios youll see inside the ward thats why it is a very challenging
moment for us Head Nurses.
Before battling into the Pediatric ward weve prepared ourselves for some
explosions thats why we made sure that were early as our Clinical instructor
because we want to make sure everythings settled. During the first day, weve
become at ease because everythings doing fine. It was less toxic than weve
expected. The group we handled were very hands on in terms of giving nursing
care and assessing their patients problems.
Starting from the assignment of patients to the members, you can see that
they are willing to do some nursing tasks. During the preparation of medications
the group was good although some members were not feeling confident the way
they prepare the medications maybe because its been along time when they last
met the pediatric ward. Some group members where quite skillful when it comes
to computing medications and breaking vials and it made us impressed and
proud of them. The group was easy to manage because they perform in
accordance.
Since the first days focus was assessment and documentation, we
handed them assessment forms in which theyd fill up their patients little profile,
answer assessment questions and made their best nursing diagnosis. Most of
their diagnosis was thoroughly done. During charting, some members
experienced problems in filling up the Intake and Output Chart and we taught
them how to properly fill up the chart so that they could avoid erasures because
charting is a legal document and it must be accurate and clear. We finished the
first day without any worries and before the first day ended, we orient them about
the activity for the next day and listen to their learnings in the first day and the
feedback was nice. They said that it was a piece of cake and every activity
theyve done was fun and practiced them to become more competent. We
finished before 3 am for the first time :D.
The focus for the second day was on medications, thats why we gave a
twenty-item exam about pharmacology. It involves simple medication calculations
and multiple choice about a little pharmacology touch to test their stock
knowledge about drugs. Fortunately, 4 people perfect the exam the rest of the
members score were also high maybe because the exam was very easy for
them. We rationalized the answers to clarify their minds because not all answers
are right and explained every options in order for them to understand and learn

from it. We, head nurses, even learn from our exam because of the
rationalization.
During the second day, most of the members know how to prepare meds
because theyve learned it from the first day. Thats why we just observed them
prepare the meds without too much guidance. From the first day to the second
day theyve done charting again and they were good at it. Looks like theyve
learned from their mistakes already from the first day. We ended up the duty with
a positive feedback again and we finished before 3 am for the second time. This
was the last day of our clinical head nursing because there was a holiday
scheduled for our third day experience thats why our exposure as head nurses
were somewhat incomplete.
Even though it was a two-day clinical haednursing experience, we enjoyed
a lot and learned from the experience itself. You cannot say somethings great
about nursing if you havent experience the job of being a head nurse. This is a
great opportunity for us to experience such thing in order for us to be ready when
our CIs are not there anymore to supervise us when we are already employed
and are already practicing our profession. We will treasure the short moments we
had as temporary head nurses, who knows... we might become head nurses in
the future not just here in the Philippines but outside the country.
We would like to thank the guidance of our clinical instructor, without her
we might be in a zigzag direction during our head nursing activities. It is a
challenging tasks and it requires competent and capable people to manage a
group of practicing nurses. All in all the days we spent were worth it. We ended
the last day with happy faces and happy tummies. :D
