Foreword
This document (prEN 14637:2003) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 33 "Doors,
windows, shutters, building hardware and curtain walling", the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR.
This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
This Standard has been prepared under a mandate M/101 Doors shutters, gates and related building
hardware given to CEN by the European Commission and European Free Trade Association, and
supports essential requirements of the EU Construction Product Directive (89/106/EEC).

prEN 14637:2003 (E)

Introduction
The purpose of an electrically controlled hold-open system is to reliably hold open and release selfclosing fire/smoke control door assemblies at the earliest practicable moment, in the event of fire, but
not to generate an alarm signal. In this regard the required function of the fire detectors is different to
the normal usage of fire detectors in fire detection and fire alarm systems. In the case of hold-open
systems according to this standard, the primary objective is to release a door reliably and any
incidence of false alarms is of secondary importance. Whereas in the case of fire detection and fire
alarm systems the incidence of false alarms has to be kept to the absolute minimum. (See 6.1.1 and
6.1.2.).
This European Standard is drafted on the basis of essential system functions and elements which are
provided on all electrically controlled hold-open systems and which comprises hold-open device(s),
control unit, power supply unit, and fire detector(s). Options with requirements for additional system
functions and elements may be also be provided, such as indicating devices, interconnecting cables,
door position switches, interfaces with other systems, local manual controls, battery back-up, etc,.
It is intended that the options may be used for specific applications. The optional function(s) and
elements are included as a separate entity, with its own set of associated requirements, in order to
permit electrically controlled hold-open systems with many different combinations of functions to
comply with this standard. Where an option is taken, corresponding requirements are included.
Other functions associated with electrically controlled hold-open systems may also be provided, even
if not specified in this standard.
The performance tests incorporated in this standard are considered to be reproducible and, as such,
will provide a consistent and objective assessment of the performance of these hold-open systems.

Scope

This European Standard specifies requirements, methods of test and performance criteria against
which the compatibility of elements and their performance can be assessed when used in
combination to form an electrically controlled hold-open system. It also specifies requirements for the
integrity of such hold-open systems when connected to fire detection and fire alarm systems or other
systems, including the signal exchange and technical data for interfaces.
This European Standard provides requirements for the application of electrically controlled hold-open
systems used for fire/smoke doors in buildings, where such doors are required to be self-closing. It
covers planning, design, installation, commissioning, use and maintenance of hold-open systems,
intended for the protection of life and/or the protection of property. This may also include hold-open
systems, or elements of the hold-open system, that are self-contained in a single enclosure.
Electrically controlled hold-open systems manufactured, installed and serviced in accordance with this
European Standard are recommended for use wherever there is a requirement for reliable hold-open
and release of an individual self-closing fire/ smoke door assembly in the case of fire.
This European Standard does not cover design, installation, commissioning, use and maintenance of
building fire detection and fire alarm systems (covered by EN 54-14) but does cover the connection of
hold-open systems according to this standard to building fire detection and fire alarm systems, under
certain prescribed conditions.
This European standard does not cover the requirements of performance characteristics and
operational environment conditions of particular elements of a hold-open system, where these
requirements are already covered by European specifications, and which include appropriate test
methods to assure reproducible test results for the product conformity assessment.
This European standard does not cover electrically controlled systems used for smoke venting
purposes or systems that allow the door to remain open under fault conditions (i.e. not fail-safe).

prEN 14637:2003 (E)

Classification

4.1

Coding system

For the purpose of this European Standard, hold-open systems shall be classified according to the
following coding system as described in 4.2 to 4. 7.

4.2

Category of use (first digit)

Only one category of use is identified:

Grade 3:
High frequency of use by public and others with little incentive to exercise care, i.e.
where there is some chance of misuse.

EXAMPLES Doors within factories, office buildings, hotels, hospitals, schools and other buildings
which provide access to designated areas and which are used by the public and others frequently
carrying or moving bulky objects.

4.3

Durability (second digit)

Six grades of durability are identified, based on the hold-open element of the system:

Grade 0:

500 test cycles;

Grade 1:

2,500 test cycles;

Grade 3:

10,000 test cycles;

Grade 5 :

50,000 test cycles;

Grade 6 : 100,000 test cycles;

Grade 7 : 200,000 test cycles.

4.4

Door type (third digit):

Five grades of door types and therefore different hold-open systems are identified:

Grade 1:

Swing doors;

Grade 2:

Sliding doors;

Grade 3:

Roller shutter and lifting doors;

Grade 4:

Automatic swing doors;

Grade 5:

Automatic sliding doors.

NOTE

4.5

Where a hold-open system is suitable for use with different door types they all shall be identified.

Suitability for use on fire/smoke door assemblies (fourth digit):

Only one grade of suitability for fire/smoke door assemblies is identified:

13

prEN 14637:2003 (E)

4.6

Grade 1:
Suitable for use on fire/smoke door assemblies, subject to satisfactory assessment
of the contribution of the door/frame fixed elements of the hold-open system to the fire resistance
of specified fire/smoke door assemblies. Such assessment is beyond the scope of this European
Standard (see EN 1634).

Safety (fifth digit):

All hold-open systems are required to satisfy the essential requirement of safety in use. Therefore
only one grade is identified :

4.7

Grade 1:
All hold-open systems have a critical safety function, therefore only the top grade is
identified for the purposes of this standard.

Corrosion resistance (sixth digit):

Three grades of corrosion resistance are identified according to EN 1670:

Grade 2:

moderate resistance;

Grade 3:

high resistance;

Grade 4:

very high resistance.

4.8

Example of classification:

EXAMPLE
3

1/2

This denotes an electrically controlled hold-open system complying with grade 3 category of use,
tested for 50 000 cycles, applicable for use on swing doors and sliding doors, suitable for use on
fire/smoke door assemblies, with safety grade 1 and with high corrosion resistance.

5.1

Requirements and test methods for elements of a hold-open system

General

This clause specifies requirements, performance characteristics and operational environment

conditions for the different elements of hold-open systems installed in buildings, including appropriate
test methods that assure reproducible test results for the conformity assessment of the hold-open
system. Some hold-open system elements are already fully or partly specified in product standards as
EN 1155 (hold-open devices), EN 54-7 (smoke detectors), EN 54-4 (power supply units), etc. This
clause indicates restrictions and additional requirements wherever reference is made to existing
standards. This may also include hold-open systems or elements of a hold-open system, that are selfcontained in a single enclosure.
Where elements of a hold-open system are self-contained in a single enclosure the requirements for
the element with the lowest environmental requirements may be applied also to the other elements of
the complete assembly. However, the requirements of 6.8 shall be the minimum level to be applied.

14

prEN 14637:2003 (E)

5.2

Fire detectors

5.2.1

Smoke detectors

Smoke detectors shall correspond to the requirements specified in EN 54-7, but with the following
exception:a)

For all smoke detectors incorporated in a hold open system, or in an assembly group of the holdopen system which are self-contained in a single enclosure and are installed on the door lintel,
the directional dependence test of 5.3 of EN 54-7 shall be applied only in the orientations
permitted by the design of the detector assembly.

b)

For optical smoke detectors incorporated in a hold open system, or in an assembly group of the
hold-open system, which are self-contained in a single enclosure, the requirement of 4.7 of EN
54-7 may be varied to additionally allow for one test opening of max. 2.5 mm (to allow manual
testing of the detector).

Where such smoke detectors do not comply fully with the requirements of EN 54-7, they shall not be
marked as complying with EN 54-7, and shall not be used other than in the enclosure for which they
are designed.
In the case of smoke detectors containing radioactive materials, compliance with the relevant national
requirements for radiation protection must also be ensured.
5.2.2

system, the environmental tests shall be carried out together with all the other elements, considering
also the environmental tests which may be applicable to those elements.
The correct operation of power supply shall be shown by a light emitting green indicator, complying
with the requirements of 12.7.1 of EN 54-2.
5.3.2

For power supply units with stand-by parallel operation

5.3.2.1

General

In certain cases, presence sensors (for monitoring the closing range, e.g. photoelectric cells, contact
strips, light barriers) are required in order to comply with accident prevention/health and safety
regulations, requirements specified in guidelines of rail-bound conveyor systems, or other regulations.
In such cases, the power supply unit must be provided, for the purpose of bridging power failures,
with a second power source either in form of maintenance-free batteries for fire detection and fire
alarm systems or in form of being connected to an emergency generator unit.
5.3.2.2

Additional requirements for power supply units with back-up batteries

Power supply units with back-up batteries shall comply with the requirements specified in EN 54-4
and 15.12 of EN 54-2 (Mains voltage dips and interruptions).
In the case of hold-open systems that include presence sensors to monitor the closing range, the
battery capacity shall be sufficient in order to guarantee operation of the presence sensors for a
further 30 minutes after closing.
5.3.2.3
Additional requirements for power supply units connected to an emergency
generator unit
If the mains power supply system is supported by a local stand-by power source (e.g. an emergency
generator unit), this stand-by power supply unit shall be capable of maintaining normal operations for
1 hour in the event of a mains power failure.

5.4
5.4.1

Control units
General

A control unit according to this European Standard shall release (de-energise) the connected holdopen device(s) reliably (fail-safe) and without delay in the event of alarm (fire alarm), fault (wire break,
short circuit, mains power failure) or manual control. A delayed release is only permitted in the case of
those hold-open systems where the closing range of the fire/smoke door is monitored by presence
sensors. (see 5.3.2.1).
After the control unit has responded, it shall be possible to reinstate its functional capability by simple
means and without special tools. Automatic reinstatement is acceptable.

16

prEN 14637:2003 (E)

Any software incorporated shall conform with the relevant requirements of 13.1 to 13.4 and 13.6 of
EN 54-2.
For control units, environmental and functional tests are only carried out as part of the overall holdopen system test.
5.4.2

Control units in stand-alone hold-open systems (single-line system)

Control units which only serve to monitor few fire/smoke doors may be integrated in the fire detector,
in the power supply unit, in the hold-open device or with all or some of these elements in a selfcontained single enclosure. Such a single-line system consists of just one detector zone.
The initiation by the detector zone shall be shown by a light emitting red indicator, complying with the
requirements of 12.7.1 and 12.7.2 of EN 54-2.
For control units being integrated in the fire detector, or the power supply unit, or being part of a single
enclosure, only one indicator is mandatory. The indicator may be of the type switching from green to
red light to serve the requirements of indicating both correct operation, and alarm status.
5.4.3

Control units in fire alarm systems (multi-zone system)

If a fire detection and fire alarm system is installed in the building, some components of this system
may be used to provide the control unit function of hold-open systems to this standard, under the
following conditions:a)

the fire detection and fire alarm system shall correspond to the relevant parts of EN 54;

b)

In microprocessor-controlled fire detection and fire alarm systems, the failure of a processor shall
be treated as a fault;

c)

The hold-open devices shall be capable of being manually controlled from the initiation
equipment of the fire detection and fire alarm system (pushbuttons, switches).

5.5
5.5.1

Hold-open devices
General

A hold-open device shall release within 3 s after receiving the release signal from the control unit, to
allow the fire/smoke door to close from any open position under the control of the door closing device.
Each hold-open device of a hold-open system must also be capable of being released manually,
without adversely affecting the functional capabilities of the control unit.
The closing operation of the fire/smoke door, once initiated, may only be interrupted for reasons of
personnel protection, and, in the case of doors in rail-bound conveyor systems, where objects may
still be in the closing range of the door.
The closing operation shall continue automatically from any open position once the closing range is
cleared.
Hold-open devices shall be designed for rated supply voltage of 24 V direct current. All performance
requirements shall be verified at 85 % and 110 % of rated supply voltage.
NOTE
Hold-open devices operated on other supply voltages are permitted subject to local regulations and
approval. Attention is drawn to additional safety measures that may be necessary when higher voltages are used.

17

prEN 14637:2003 (E)

Hold-open devices which contain electronic elements (e.g. diodes, semiconductors, integrated circuits
etc.) shall fulfil the requirements of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of EN 50081-1 for emission
and
EN 50130-4 for immunity. In the absence of detailed specifications, compliance with this requirement
may be verified by the overall EMC hold-open system test.
5.5.2

Hold open devices for swing doors

Hold open devices for swing doors, either with the hold-open mechanism incorporated in a door
closer or separately mounted (e.g. holding magnets), shall, as a minimum, comply with the
requirements of EN 1155, corrosion grade 2.
Durability requirements are contained within EN 1155.
5.5.3
5.5.3.1

Hold-open devices for sliding doors, lifting doors, industrial doors and roller shutters
General

The minimum and maximum holding forces which may occur in any position in which the door/shutter
can be held shall be specified by the manufacturer. Within these limits of holding force, the reliable
holding and release of the door/shutter shall be guaranteed. This shall be verified at rated supply
voltage 15 % and rated supply voltage +10 %. The initial type-test shall normally be performed on a
typical door/shutter. In the case of exceptionally large or heavy doors, the maximum test door mass
may be simulated by attaching weights to the typical door/shutter.
NOTE
Proper testing of this requirement in each case may only be possible on site, after the door/shutter is
installed. In this case the building authority responsible for the final approval of construction work shall testify
compliance with this requirement.

In the event of failure of the electric power supply, electrically operated doors/shutters shall reliably be
closed by stored mechanical energy.
If a holding-magnet is used as hold-open device, its holding force is recommended to be above 120 N
at 85 % supply voltage and the release function of the holding magnets shall be manually controlled
by an accessible clearly identified push button (see 5.2.6 of EN 1155, second paragraph).
Where sliding doors are opened by automatic mechanisms, the requirements of 5.5.4, paragraphs 2
to 4 shall apply.
5.5.3.2

Durability

In the case of holding magnets being used as hold-open devices (e.g. for sliding doors) these
magnets shall comply with the requirements for separate hold-open devices specified in EN 1155,
with the exception that the durability test of 5.2.4. of EN 1155 may only be related to the durability
classification under 4.3 for the hold-open system claimed by the manufacturer. However, such
magnets shall not be marked as EN 1155 compliant.
NOTE
In the absence of a specific product standard covering hold-open devices for sliding doors, EN 1155
is referenced. Sliding doors are not envisaged to have a high frequency of operation and therefore the durability
test is related to the durability classification of the complete hold-open system.

Where elements other than holding magnets are used as hold-open devices, an appropriate testing
plan shall be agreed between the test authority and the manufacturer.

18

prEN 14637:2003 (E)

5.5.4

Automatic door operators

Automatic door operators shall comply with the requirements of prEN 12650-1 (Powered pedestrian
doors) including the additional requirements of 5.8 of prEN 12650-1.
In the event of failure of the electrical power supply, a fire/smoke door controlled by an automatic door
operator used as an element of a hold-open system to this European Standard, shall close by stored
mechanical energy provided by the automatic door operator or by separate means.
In the event of fire or fault, the actuation of the door leaf for automatic opening by means of electrosensitive protective equipment or automatic activators and any hold-open and delayed closing
function of an automatic door operator shall be switched off (fail-safe operation).
To reinstate these functions only local manual reset is permitted.
In the event of fire or fault any electric strike(s) fitted shall also be switched off and shall be of the type
that reverts to the latched state when power is removed.
NOTE
This requirement only applies where the engagement of the lock is necessary for the fire/smoke
performance of the door assembly.

Drive systems for powered pedestrian fire/smoke door assemblies (automatic door operators) shall
not impair the essential fire protection function and/or smoke control property of the door assembly.
For this reason drive systems for those doors, including any hold-open and/or delayed closing
function, shall have been incorporated in a door assembly that has satisfied the appropriate criteria of
a fire test. The test shall have been on a full sized door assembly in accordance with EN 1634-1 or
when relevant, in accordance with EN 1634-3.
Installation and cabling details shall be part of the test report of the initial type test of the complete
door assembly and have to be followed strictly.
Durability requirements are contained within prEN 12650.
5.5.5

Low energy/Power assisted swing door operators

These devices shall comply with the relevant requirements of prEN 12650-1 and prEN 12650-2. In
situations where these devices incorporate a hold-open mechanism, a delayed closing function with a
delay time of more than 30 s and/or are installed in connection with electro-sensitive protective
equipment or automatic activators for actuation of the door leaf, the requirements of 5.5.4 of this
European standard shall apply.
For all other low energy/power assisted operators the power assisted opening function of these
devices shall not be switched off in the event of fire, in order to facilitate egress for the occupants of
the building, for as long as possible. For this reason, those devices are not considered as elements of
a hold-open system and their installation instructions must clearly define the exclusion of the use of
any electro-sensitive protective equipment and/or automatic activator.
Durability requirements are contained within prEN 12650.

Any manual control pushbuttons shall be of the positive break type, thus opening a circuit to release
the door from the held position.
Manual control pushbuttons and/or switches shall be readily visible and shall be coloured red to avoid
confusion with other switches. The operating area shall be at least 40 mm by 40 mm and shall be
marked clearly with its function.
The housing of the manual control device shall carry the inscription: Door Hold-open ON/OFF in
the case of a switch being used, and Door release in the case of a pushbutton. Instead of Door, a
more exact designation - e.g. Shutter Door - may be used. If a switch and a pushbutton are used,
only the pushbutton is required to be coloured red and to carry an inscription.
In the case of holding magnets being used as hold-open devices, having a manual control
pushbutton/switch incorporated, that pushbutton/switch and its operating area may be of a smaller
size. In such cases, the holding magnets being used shall be provided with a separately fixed label
carrying the inscription Door release.
The door shall be released by a momentary operation (

continuous closing under the control of the closing device. It shall not be possible to interrupt the
closing operation by further pressing of the pushbutton, or in the case of a switch being used, by
switching on the power again.

System tests
General

The combination of all different elements making up the hold-open system to be tested shall be
determined by the testing authority in discussion with the manufacturer. This may involve examination
of the function of the various elements involved (theoretical analysis, see 7.3), and pre-testing of
certain attributes in order to determine the most appropriate test samples to represent the hold-open
system.
Two test sample systems shall be used for testing to this European Standard :

Test sample system A: maximum of elements within the hold-open system according to the
applicant;

Test sample system B: minimum of elements within the hold-open system according to the
applicant.

If different types of certain elements are suitable of being used within the hold-open system (e.g.
smoke detectors and/or heat detectors, electro-hydraulic hold-open devices and/or holding magnets
etc.), provisions shall be made to connect those elements alternatively to the test sample systems in
order to cover all possible variations of the hold-open system within the tests of 7.4.
Failure of any one test of sample systems A or B constitutes failure of the entire test.

7.3.1

Theoretical analysis
General

To assess the compatibility or connectability, a theoretical analysis shall be undertaken for each type
of transmission path and the result shall indicate whether a full functional test is necessary as
described in 7.3.3. The compatibility or connectability of each element shall be assessed in the
specified hold-open system configuration(s).
The Electromagnetic Compatibility Immunity tests shall only be carried out if the theoretical analysis
clearly indicates that they are necessary. Both emission and immunity testing is not necessary if each
individual element complies with the EMC requirements included in the relevant product standard and
the same cable and its termination requirements specified by the relevant manufacturer is used.
The detailed test set up and procedures shall be specified as a result of consultation between the
testing authority and the applicant and for each individual case shall take into account the results of
the theoretical analysis.
Following the theoretical analysis, an appropriate performance test programme shall be carried out,
according to the relevant parts of 7.4, to ensure that all requirements of clauses 5 and 6 are
satisfactorily proven.

27

prEN 14637:2003 (E)

The test results shall be given in accordance with annex F.

7.3.2
7.3.2.1

Procedure
General

The theoretical analysis should commence with a review of the hold-open system configurations
specified by the applicant. The objective of the review is to understand the most onerous
configurations and analyse their performance. A structured approach should then be followed which
analyses at least the following characteristics :

mechanical connections :

power supply ;

data exchange ;

functionality ;

EMC (Electromagnetic compatibility)

As far as possible, the analysis should be undertaken in the order stated, however environmental
compatibility should be considered throughout the analysis process and additional analysis may be
considered necessary.
7.3.2.2
a)

List of Characteristics

Mechanical connections
Are the mechanical arrangements for the termination of the transmission path and its connection
to the elements compatible with the cable and any accessories specified for the transmission
path?

b)

Is the maximum voltage provided by the power supply under all load conditions less than or
equal to the maximum specified voltage of the powered elements?
Is the minimum voltage provided by the power supply under all load conditions more than the
minimum voltage of powered elements taking into account the effects of voltage drops within
transmission paths?

c)

Current
Is the current available from the power supply circuit adequate to meet the maximum demands
and are appropriate measures taken to limit the current that can flow throughout the circuit to a
safe level?

angle?

28

prEN 14637:2003 (E)

e)

Tolerances
Will the elements operate satisfactorily when they are subjected to worst case tolerances of the
power supply?
These tolerances should take into account at least the likely effect of environmental temperature
and input voltage variations.

f)

Fault performance
If a short circuit fault occurs on a transmission path used for power distribution, will this be
handled in an acceptable manner; e.g. are appropriate current limiting components provided to
prevent unacceptable losses of power during conditions of current overload?

7.3.2.3

Data exchange

All active elements connected to transmission paths rely on data being received or transmitted to
perform their functions. The data may be exchanged on the same transmission path as the power
supply or may be exchanged via a separate transmission path. The analysis, however, should follow
the same method in both cases.
7.3.2.4

Transmission characteristics

Are the electrical characteristics of the transmission signals compatible with the requirements for the
successful reception of the data by other elements on the transmission path? At least, the following
characteristics should be analysed:
a)

Voltage range
Is the maximum transmitted signal voltage under all normal load conditions less than or equal to
the maximum specified voltage of the receiving elements?
Is the minimum transmitted signal voltage under all normal load conditions greater than that
specified for the receiving elements taking into account the effects of voltage drops within
transmission paths?

b)

Current
Is the signal current flowing as a result of the operation of the transmitting element adequate to
meet the demands of the receiving elements?
Are adequate signal current limiting facilities provided to protect elements against over-current
conditions?

c)

Timing
Are the time related characteristics of the transmitted signals within the limits of those required by
the receiving elements?

d)

Distortion/phase angles
Are the impedance characteristics regarding distortion and phase angles specified for the
transmission path within the values specified for the receiving elements by the manufacturer
under all load conditions?

29

prEN 14637:2003 (E)

e)

Will the receiving elements be able to successfully receive the data even under worst case
tolerances of the transmitted data and transmission path characteristics?

f)

Fault performance
If a fault, either open or short circuit occurs on a transmission path, will this be handled as
required in this standard?

7.3.2.5

Transmission protocol(s)

Is the data being exchanged between elements on the transmission path in a format, which permits all
elements to effectively transmit and/or receive relevant data?
Is there a protocol for each transmission path, which will permit all the elements on the transmission
path to exchange data and function as specified?
7.3.2.6

Functionality

All elements connected on a transmission path should have a defined functionality which is specified
in supporting documentation provided by the applicant.
7.3.2.7

Received data

Is the data received by the elements sufficient to permit them to perform as specified in the supporting
documentation?
7.3.2.8

Transmitted data

Is the data transmitted by the element sufficient to permit other elements on the same transmission
path to perform as specified in the supporting documentation?
7.3.3

Evaluation

After it has been shown that all parameters for the correct operation of all elements of the hold-open
system in combination are logically proven, and all evaluation criteria of 7.3.2.2 to 7.3.2.8 are fulfilled,
a statement can be made by the test authority, that the hold-open system can be expected to operate
with an acceptable degree of safety and reliability. Under these circumstances, testing according to
the relevant parts of 7.4 is not required.
Where functions and their effects on the performance of the hold-open system can not be shown by
this theoretical analysis, performance tests for these functions shall be carried out according to the
relevant parts of 7.4.

7.4

hold-open system
The following tests shall be carried out in the order below.
7.4.3.2

Output voltage

Disconnect all system elements from the power supply unit. Switch on mains power supply.

Measure the output voltage of the power supply unit under the maximum/ minimum conditions of
mains power supply tolerances (230 VAC 10%).
NOTE Other voltages are permitted, by agreement between the manufacturer and customer.

Verify that the output voltage is always within the working limits specified for the elements
recommended for being connected to the hold-open system, considering also possible voltage
drop due to cable resistance.

7.4.3.3

Input voltage

Connect all elements to the power supply unit and switch on mains power supply.

Measure the input voltage at the terminals of connected hold-open device(s), fire/smoke
detector(s) and any Electro-sensitive protective equipment.

Test sample system A: Consider the maximum number of elements possible, each connected
with the maximum of cable length (see 7.2) by using cables with the minimum sectional area
recommended by the manufacturer.

Test sample system B: Consider the minimum number of elements possible, each connected
with the minimum of cable length (see 7.2) by using cables with the maximum sectional area
recommended by the manufacturer. If the maximum sectional area is not specified use cable type
2
1.5 mm .

31

prEN 14637:2003 (E)

Verify that at the limits of power supply voltage according to 7.4.3.2, the input voltage is always
within the working limits specified for the specific element of the hold-open system.

Under the maximum and minimum conditions above, the value before failure of the relevant segment
shall be recorded (measured in Volts).
If applicable, verify that the release forces of the hold-open device for manual release are within the
specified limits.
7.4.3.4

Simulation of wire breakage and short-circuit conditions

Keep all elements connected to the power supply unit with mains power supply switched on.
For this test, either a serial resistor (0 ohms increasing to

ohms) shall be connected in the examined segment of the circuit (e.g. primary lead wire of detector).
This simulation shall be carried out with both the maximum and the minimum of elements specified by
the manufacturer.
Under the maximum and minimum conditions above, the value before failure of the relevant segment
shall be recorded (i.e. quiescent conditions before failure, measured in Ohms, Volts and Amperes).
Verify that, according to the product information supplied by the manufacturer, all the specific
elements of the hold-open system operate within their specified supply parameters and that the
complete hold-open system still functions in the case of receiving any release signal.
Verify that in each case the hold-open device(s) connected will be released within 3 s after initiation of
any release signal.
7.4.3.5

Release test

Keep all elements connected to the power supply unit with mains power supply switched on.
Check the interaction of all elements of the hold-open system with the initiation event being tested
both by simulation of the relevant fire parameter(s) of the detector(s) and by manual initiation. This
simulation shall be carried out under the maximum and minimum conditions of mains power supply
tolerances, with both the maximum and the minimum of elements specified by the manufacturer.

Verify that in each case the hold-open device(s) connected will be released within 3 s after
initiation of any release signal.

7.4.3.6

Voltage drop

Keep all elements connected to the power supply unit with mains power supply switched on.
With the hold-open device(s) fixed according 7.2, second paragraph and held in its (their) normal
holding position, reduce the output voltage at the power supply unit in steps of 1 Volt. At each voltage
step, initiate a release signal and measure the time to release. Re-engage the hold-open device and
continue with this procedure until the hold-open device(s) release as a result of the low supply
voltage.
Verify that for each voltage step the hold-open device(s) connected is/are released within 3 s after
initiation of the release signal.
NOTE

32

Voltage requirements for battery back-up and stand-by systems are covered by 5.3.2.

prEN 14637:2003 (E)

7.4.4

If it is obvious from the product information supplied by the manufacturer, that the relay contact rating
of the control unit may be exceeded (e.g. caused by the electrical rating of the power supply unit),
additional means of protection shall be provided. If no additional protection is provided, then shortcircuit and load tests shall be performed on the relay contacts at the maximum current available from
the power supply.
This test shall be done with the minimum number of hold-open system elements connected, as
specified by the manufacturer.
7.4.5

Short-circuit test

Rated voltage shall be applied to the hold-open system and a short-circuit shall be produced at all
terminals of the hold-open system that are accessible during installation or normal usage.
Verify that no malfunction and no unacceptable load occurs to the hold-open system and that either
all connected hold-open devices will be released immediately, within 3 s, or after this short- circuit
test, in the case of receiving any release signal.
7.4.6

Electrical safety tests

Test the hold-open system in accordance with EN 60335, as appropriate.

Verify that the requirements of 6.6 are met.

7.4.7

These tests shall be carried out on a hold-open system containing the maximum number of elements
recommended by the manufacturer.
Compliance with the EMC requirements of 6.4 above shall be checked in accordance with the
standards mentioned by carrying out preliminary testing and function testing. If testing of the complete
hold-open system is not reasonably practicable due to the size of the door assembly, the
manufacturer shall verify that all appropriate equipment sub-assemblies comply with 6.4 above and
are suitably installed and wired for the test to minimise disturbances and/or their effects.
During the EMC tests, the fire detector(s) shall be triggered. Verify that the requirements of 6.4 are
met.

10 Usage and Maintenance

10.1 Usage of installations
A hold-open systems can only fulfil its intended purpose when performing correctly and when the
users are familiar with its function. The building manager is responsible for advising the building users
of these criteria, ensuring correct use of the hold-open system, and for ensuring that any malfunction
of the hold-open system or its elements is immediately corrected.
Any manual control pushbutton or switch and if required, accompanying directional signs, shall be
clearly visible and accessible.

10.2 Periodic inspection

The hold-open system must be permanently kept in a good operating condition by the building
manager.
In order to ensure that the hold-open system is in a satisfactory working condition, a routine site
inspection should be undertaken at regular intervals according to local regulations. An example of the
routine inspection report form is shown in annex E.
In addition, the building manager has the responsibility to inspect and maintain all the elements to
ensure that they are operating and interacting properly and without fault. An inspection shall be
carried out and recorded, at least once a year or according to local regulations.
These regular inspections shall be performed by skilled personnel authorised by the manufacturer of
the control unit or hold-open device, or from an accredited test/inspection agency.

39

prEN 14637:2003 (E)

Annex A
(informative)
Recommendations for planning and design of the hold-open
system

A.1 General
Only elements approved within an overall system test by a recognised authority should be used for
planning and design of the hold-open system on site. The manufacturer of the control unit of the holdopen system is responsible for submitting the system to its initial type test, including the hold-open
system elements selected, and for the approval by a recognised authority.
NOTE

approval of hold-open systems may be subject to specific national or local regulations.

A.2 Restrictions
Doors separating rooms in which an explosive atmosphere is likely to result from the accumulation of
combustible dusts should not be equipped with hold-open systems according to this European
Standard.
For doors of rooms in which an explosive atmosphere may result from the accumulation of
combustible gases, vapours or mists, hold-open systems may only be used if the hold-open devices
are additionally initiated by detectors of a gas warning system. The gas warning system and holdopen system must be electrically compatible. Elements, components and interconnecting cables of
hold-open systems which are installed in these rooms should be intrinsically safe.

A.3 Detectors
A.3.1 Selection of detector type
Wherever possible, smoke detectors should be used for hold-open systems. Depending on local
service and operating conditions, other detectors may be more suitable.
The selection of the smoke detector type depends on the likely pattern of fire development at the site
concerned:
a)

If the initial phase of the fire is expected to take the form of a smouldering fire, scattered light
smoke detectors should be used. When employing scattered light smoke detectors, it must be
considered that this detector type can also be triggered by dust. In such areas where dust is
likely, scattered light smoke detectors should not be installed in order to avoid false alarms.

b)

If an open fire is likely to occur during the fire development phase (e.g. due to the presence of
combustible liquids), ionisation smoke detectors should be installed. When using ionisation
smoke detectors, compliance is required with all relevant radiation protection regulations. In
addition, it must be considered in the case of ionisation smoke detectors that this detector type
can also be triggered by invisible aerosols (e.g. vapours or gases). In areas where such aerosols
are likely to occur, ionisation smoke detectors should not be installed in order to avoid false
alarms.

40

prEN 14637:2003 (E)

c)

If smoke or similar aerosols (e.g. dust) occur during normal working or production processes, so
that there is danger that smoke detectors will trigger false alarms, heat-sensitive detectors should
be installed.

d)

For other conditions, specific detectors, such as gas detectors, may be more appropriate.

NOTE 1
Smoke detection systems are now becoming available in which more than one operating principle is
used to detect fire, with the objective of obtaining a better differentiation between fire and non-fire conditions.
Such detection systems may have more than one sensor in a single detector housing, or may combine the
readings from several different detectors. Typical combinations may include smoke and heat sensors, ionisation
chamber and optical scattering sensors, or infrared and ultraviolet flame sensors.
NOTE 2

For further information on selection of detectors see annex B of EN 54-14.

A.3.2 Positioning and number of detectors

A.3.2.1 For hold-open and release of individual self-closing fire/smoke door assemblies by
detectors monitoring the door
If ceiling-mounted detectors are required in the following, these detectors should be installed directly
below the ceiling surface above the clear door opening. The horizontal distance of the detectors from
the wall in which the door opening to be protected is located shall be at least 0.5 m and not more than
2.5 m.
In the case of a suspended ceiling, detectors should either be installed on the load-bearing ceiling
(structural ceiling, Figure A.1.a) or on the suspended ceiling in this area where, in the event of a fire, a
major concentration of smoke is first likely to occur. Suspended ceilings with a fire protection
classification are generally impermeable so that smoke spreads along their bottom surface (Figure
A.1.b); decorative suspended ceilings are, as a general rule, smoke-permeable (Figure A.1.c).
The selection of the number and type of detectors is related to the dimension between the top edge of
the clear door opening and the ceiling, as shown in Figure A.2.
In order to determine the number of requisite detectors, it is assumed that a detector covers an area
2
of 16 m . In the case of opening widths in excess of 4.0 m, therefore, further detectors or detector
pairs may be necessary in order to cover the entire opening width.
As a general rule, at least one ceiling detector should be installed in each of the two rooms bordering
on the opening to be protected i.e. a pair of detectors is required and at least one lintel-mounted
detector should be installed above the edge of the clear opening on one side of the lintel.
If, on both sides of said opening, the underside of the ceiling is not more than 1.0 m above the top
edge of the opening to be protected, lintel-mounted detectors are not necessary.
If the clear opening is not wider than 3.0 m, and if it is closed by a swing door, it is sufficient to install
just one lintel-mounted detector.
Where a lintel-mounted detector is installed, this should be at a position directly on the wall above
the clear door opening at a height of no more than 0.1 m above the bottom edge of the lintel.
Detectors suspended from the ceiling (pendant detectors) and detectors which are fixed to cantilevers
so that the distance of the detector axis from the wall is greater than approx. the diameter of the
detector base (cantilever detectors), and also other detectors installed in other areas not named, are
not taken into consideration for the requisite number of detectors for an application.

Figure A.3 Flow chart to determine the requisite number of detectors

A.3.2.2 For hold-open and release of self-closing fire/smoke door assemblies by detectors
monitoring the neighbouring rooms
All necessary detectors should be fixed on the ceiling.
The numbers of detectors required depends on the volume of the rooms, and may be restricted by
local regulations. In order to determine the number of requisite detectors, it is assumed that a detector
2
covers an area of 16 m .
As a general rule, at least one ceiling detector should be installed in each of the two rooms bordering
on the opening to be protected, i.e. a pair of detectors is required.
Detectors should not be closer than 0.5 m to any neighbouring wall.
The vertical distance from the lower edge of the lintel of the protected door and the smoke detector
should not exceed 2.5 m.

43

prEN 14637:2003 (E)

classification are generally impermeable so that smoke spreads along their bottom surface (Figure
A.1.b); decorative suspended ceilings are, as a general rule, smoke-permeable (Figure A.1.c).

A.4 Selection of hold-open device

A.4.1 General
There are many different types of electrically powered hold-open devices available, with widely
differing function and performance. The final choice of hold-open device should be made taking
account of the intended usage of the fire/smoke door and the hold-open position(s) required during
use.

A.4.2 Swing doors

A.4.2.1

General

The selection of the size of hold-open device should match the door size and door-closer power size.
A.4.2.2

Electro-hydraulic hold-open device

An electro-hydraulic hold open-device is always integrated in the hydraulic system of a door closer.
Necessary clearance between the mechanical components of the door closer and its arms, the setting
of elastic gaskets within the system, as well as the change of volume of the hydraulic fluid caused by
temperature changes leads to the fact, that the door is not kept open at the maximum possible
opening angle but settles back a few degrees. This settle-back depends also on the door opening
angle and is growing against 180 door opening. So is, for example, the settle-back of a door with 1m
width something like 5 cm to 8 cm at 90 door opening and 10 cm to 15 cm at 180 door opening.
If a door is required to be kept open at a certain angle by an electro-hydraulic hold-open device,
incorporated in a door closer, it must be ensured that the door can be opened further to allow for the
relevant settle-back (e.g. wall-recess deeper, providing recess for door handle).
Under certain conditions (e.g. temperature variations, etc) these devices may, over an extended
period of time, permit the door to move from the set hold-open position. General maintenance and
supervision will overcome this characteristic.
In normal cases, doors, with electro-hydraulic hold-open devices being installed, can be kept open at
any angle from approximately 80 to 180 as required, without any additional adjustment.
A.4.2.3

Electro-mechanical hold-open device

Electro-mechanical hold-open devices can be incorporated in a door closer or, in the normal case with
overhead door closers, incorporated in the door closer arm assembly.
The hold-open position has to be adjusted to the required opening angle. The door is kept open
exactly at this set position. Further opening of the door, beyond the set hold-open position, is possible
with some hold-open devices, but is not necessary to achieve a positive hold open of the door.
However, opening beyond the set hold-open position, especially in connection with big and/or heavy
doors, may lead to overrunning the hold-open position and closing, caused by the kinetic energy of
the moving door.
Electro-mechanical hold-open devices usually only have one hold-open position to be used. This
position is usually chosen within the range from approximately 80 to 130 door opening.

44

prEN 14637:2003 (E)

A.4.2.4

Holding magnet

In the normal case holding magnets are hold-open devices which are independent of the closing
device. They have to be installed exactly at the desired hold-open position. Subsequent alteration of
the hold-open-position is only possible if the holding magnet is reinstalled at the required new
position.
The hold-open of the door is very stable at any chosen opening angle up to 180. The stability of the
hold-open may be increased by using holding magnets providing release moments in excess of 120
Nm. For such magnets however, a manual control pushbutton or switch is mandatory.
A.4.2.5

Free swing door closer

Free swing door closers, such as electrically powered hold-open door closing devices with free swing
arm assemblies, may be used in cases where fire/smoke door assemblies are required to swing
freely, giving an effect comparable with doors without a door closer being fitted. A positive hold-open
position of the door leaf is therefore not possible.
To guarantee correct closing function on double leaf swing doors fitted with a door co-ordinator
device, free swing door closers or arm assemblies should normally only be used for the closing
control of the active leaf.

A.4.3 Sliding doors

A.4.3.1

Single point hold-open

For sliding doors where only one hold-open position is required, holding magnets may be installed,
either to the wall or to the door-rail. They have to be installed exactly at the desired hold-open
position. The installation to the door rail allows adjustment of the desired hold-open position more
easily. The installer has to fix the bracket of the magnet in such a way that it cannot be damaged
when the door is pushed open. Soft damping anchor plate designs will reduce the risk of damage to
the hold-open device and are strongly recommended.
A.4.3.2

Multi-point hold-open

On sliding doors where variable hold-open positions are required, revolving drive hold-open devices
with chains, ropes or belts to connect the hold-open device with the door can be used. Common
revolving drive hold-open devices allow a free selection of the hold-open position of the door.
On manually operated doors (i.e. without automatic operators) manual control push-buttons may be
required, which are of the switch-type which requires a separate action (pulling) to reinstate its
function.

A.4.4 Roller shutter and lifting doors

The hold-open devices of roller shutter and lifting doors are always a construction element of the door
design and cannot be considered separately. The manufacturer of the door assembly should give
guidance.

A.4.5 Automatic doors

Guidance is given in 5.5.4 and 5.5.5.

45

prEN 14637:2003 (E)

A.5 Manual release and manual control

A.5.1.1

General

The release may either result from manually pulling the door (for swing doors only) from its held
position (manual release) and/or result from interrupting the power supply manually by means of a
pushbutton and/or switch (manual control).

A.5.2 Location of switch/pushbutton

In above case of release by interruption of the power supply, the switch or pushbutton must be
located in the immediate vicinity of the door and must not be covered by the door in its held-open
position. It should be readily visible and easy to operate.
In the case of holding magnets with a pushbutton incorporated in the device, the label, supplied with
the device, carrying the inscription Door release should point to this manual control pushbutton.

A.6 Interconnecting cables

All interconnecting cables must comply with the cable details given in the installation instructions
provided by the manufacturer of the hold-open system or control unit, as appropriate. This should
include minimum cross-sectional area of cables in relation to their length, and power consumption of
the element(s) to be connected, as well as mechanical aspects if required.

A.7 Guidance on competence, responsibilities, and services for individual

installations in individual buildings.
A.7.1 Planning
The planning of an individual installation of a hold-open system in an individual building and the
selection of its elements should only be carried out by specialists or trained personnel. The
instructions of the manufacturer of the hold-open system/control unit should be followed closely. Local
conditions as environmental influences (e.g. high/low temperatures, dusty atmosphere, humidity) and
user specific requirements (e.g. high frequency of release, operational location, traffic, security) must
be considered in regard to the elements of the hold-open system to be chosen.
The planning office is responsible for the correct selection of the elements of the hold-open system.

A.7.2 Installation
The installation and assembling of the hold-open system on the building side must be carried out by
skilled personnel being conversant with all required trades and with the relevant regulations. The
installation instructions of the manufacturer of the hold-open system / control unit must be followed.
The installation contractor is responsible for the correct installation of the hold-open system.

46

prEN 14637:2003 (E)

Annex B
(informative)
Recommendations for installation and fixing

B.1 The fixing instructions should be carefully followed during installation. These instructions and
the maintenance instructions should be passed on by the installer to the user.
B.2 In the case of doors which are held open by hold-open systems, the area/range/sweep
necessary for the closing operation to be performed must be kept constantly clear. This area shall be
clearly identified by lettering, floor markings or similar.
Where necessary, structural measures shall also be implemented to ensure that lines, pipes leads,
cables, storage goods or components (e.g. false ceilings or their components) are reliably prevented
from falling into the area to be kept clear.
B.3 The fixings of hold-open devices must not impair the protective function of the fire/smoke door
assembly. In cases of doubt, system integrity should be verified by appropriate tests. Care should be
taken that any fixings or preparation of the fire door assembly does not reduce its fire integrity.
B.4 It is recommended that anchor-plates for hold-open magnets are secured to the leaves of swing
doors such, that the fixing screws are not more than 150 mm from the top or bottom edge of the door
leaf. The fixing position should be as far as possible away from the centreline of the door-hinges. In
steel doors, where no supporting structures are provided (e.g. internal brackets), tapered draw nuts
should be used in conjunction with the screws provided by the manufacturer.
B.5 For swing doors, manual release forces at the door-handle position are recommended to be
between 50 N and 100 N.
If, after installation, the manual release forces are found to be too high, a local pushbutton for manual
control should be fitted. If the manual release forces are found to be too low, a higher hold-open
power size should be used. If hold-open devices with adjustable power are being used, in above
cases the power should be adjusted accordingly.
B.6 Flexible cables should be protected against trapping between door edges and the door frame,
by means of armoured loops or equivalent.

47

prEN 14637:2003 (E)

Annex C
(informative)
Recommendations for verification and commissioning

Following the installation on site of the hold-open system ready for operation, its functional integrity
and quality of installation should be confirmed by an acceptance inspection procedure.
Manufacturers of control units and hold-open devices are responsible for advising the user/building
operator of this inspection requirement. The inspection will normally be arranged by the building
manager.
The acceptance inspection should be performed by skilled personnel authorised by the above
manufacturers, or from an accredited test-/inspection agency.
The acceptance inspection should encompass verification of at least the following :
a)

The installed elements of the hold-open system should be in accordance with the elements
indicated in the certificate of conformity.

b)

The CE marking and accompanying information of the elements installed should be in

accordance with the marking indicated in the certificate of conformity.

c)

The interaction of all the elements should be examined against the requirements indicated in this
European Standard, with the initiation event being tested both by simulation of the fire parameter
of the detectors, and also by manual initiation.

d)

A test should be performed to ensure that the door is released for self-closing if the hold-open
system becomes inoperable (e.g. through the removal of a detector or due to a power failure).

Once the acceptance inspection has been successfully completed, the person who performed the
inspection should permanently fix on the wall in the immediate vicinity of the door a plate supplied by
the manufacturer of the control unit of the hold-open system or by the supplier of the complete holdopen system measuring at least 30 mm x 40 mm and carrying the inscription :
