TIME CAPSULES

If you had to choose an object to show people in the future how we live today, what would you choose? Would it
be a CD representing the music of today or maybe examples of todays fashions? Do you think that in 100 years,
people will even be interested in how we live today?
The answer is probably yes. People have always wondered about everyday life in the past. Thats the reason
time capsules have become so popular. A time capsule is a container which has been filled with items that
are examples of things people use in their daily lives. Then the capsule is closed and placed somewhere, with
instructions to open it at a specific time in the future.
One example of a time capsule is the Crypt of Civilization in Atlanta, USA. The crypt, or large underground
room, was filled with thousands of objects, as well as pictures and papers. It was closed in 1940. The plan is to
open the crypt in 8113!
Another example is the Yahoo! Time Capsule, which is a digital time capsule that was created in 2006 and will
be opened in 2020 in honour of the 25th anniversary of the Yahoo! website. In this unusual project, Yahoo! asked
people all over the world to take part in a special website by sending in material. Thousands of people from 227
countries sent material to be read, seen or heard in the future. The material included stories and letters they had
written, personal photos, art, home movies and prayers as well as music. Not surprisingly, the most popular topic
was love.
Anyone can create their own personal time capsule. So get a special container, start filling it with your personal
choices and decide when in the future you want it opened. Many years from now, someone will see the past
through your eyes!
