Math in Everyday Life

Math and many of its aspects are a major part of everyday life. We spend the majority of our
school years studying and learning the concepts of it. Many times, the question of why do we
need to know these things? has been asked. The following report will explain the history
and purpose of geometry in our lives. Geometry means measure of the earth. In
ancient Egypt, the Nile would flood its banks each year, flooding the land and destroying the
farm areas. When the waters receded and the people had to redefine the boundaries. This work
was called geometry and was seen as a re-establishment of the principle of law and order on
earth. (Lawlor, 6) Geometry is the mathematics of the properties, measurement, and relationship
of the points, lines, angles, surfaces, and solids (Foner and Garraty). An ancient Greek
mathematician, named Euclidean, was the founder of the study of geometry. Euclids
Elements is the basis for modern school textbooks in geometry. On the other hand, there is nonEuclidean geometry. This refers to the types of geometry which deny Euclids postulate
about parallel lines. Once Albert Einstein put forth the theory of Relativity other approaches to
geometry, besides Euclids was needed. (Kett and Trefil) Pythagoras emphasized the study of
musical harmony and geometry. His theorem was that the square of the length of the hypotenuse
is equal to the sum of the other two sides. (Kett and Trefil) Johannes Kepler, formulator of the
laws of planetary motion is quoted as saying, Geometry has two great treasures: one of them
is the theorem of Pythagoras, the other the division of a line into mean and extreme ratios, that is
the Golden Mean. (Lawlor, 53) There are great philosophical, natural and artistic things
which have surrounded this dimension ever since humanity first began to reflect upon the
geometric forms of the world.

Contribution of Ramanujan to Mathematics

Srinivasa Ramanujan demonstrated his mathematical genius even as a 10 year old. He died at the
age of 32, but his contribution to mathematics such as Landau-Ramanujan constant, Mock theta
functions, Ramanujan conjecture, Ramanujan prime, Ramanujan-Soldner constant, Ramanujan
theta function, Ramanujan's sum, Rogers-Ramanujan identities, Ramanujan's master theorem.
His discoveries are original and not influenced by the mathematical community centered in
Europe in that era. National mathematics day (december22) is celebrated to commemorate his
birthday

The biosphere is the global sum of all ecosystems. It can also be termed the zone of life on
Earth, a closed system (apart from solar and cosmic radiation and heat from the interior of the
Earth), and largely self-regulating.[1] By the most general biophysiological definition, the
biosphere is the global ecological system integrating all living beings and their relationships,

including their interaction with the elements of the lithosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and
atmosphere. The biosphere is postulated to have evolved, beginning with a process of biopoesis
(life created naturally from non-living matter such as simple organic compounds) or biogenesis
(life created from living matter), at least some 3.5 billion years ago.[2][3] The earliest evidences for
life on Earth are graphite found to be biogenic in 3.7 billion-year-old metasedimentary rocks
discovered in Western Greenland[4] and microbial mat fossils found in 3.48 billion-year-old
sandstone discovered in Western Australia.[5][6]

Pollution Control Measures

The Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, GOI are the concerned highest authority to
deal with Pollution Control Measures. TheIndian Pollution Control Measures related issues
are well addressed. TheIndian Pollution Control Measures for the protection of environment is
at par with world standard.
The Pollution Control Measures undertaken by the government ofIndia are:

Adoption of cost effective cleaner technologies should be encouraged

Implementation of waste minimization techniques and adoption of

appropriate pollution control measures

Discard and discourage technologies which do not conform to the quality of

products

Spreading awareness messages through programs for the prospective and

existing entrepreneurs on usage of cleaner technologies and pollution control

Waste minimization for improvement of productivity and creation of Waste

minimization circle

Assistance for sustainable development to be facilitated by the Government

ofIndia through fiscal incentives, technology, trainings etc

An additional system of taxation to be introduced based on concentration of

waste

Encourage industry to regard 'pollution' as an economic problem

To decide the cost of water, power, fuel, etc through market instruments

Tax exemption on waste selling, resource recovery and reuse to be introduced

Incentives may be introduced on waste selling, resource recovery, reuse, etc

Scattered business units to follow stringent pollution control regulations

Allowance for capital investment and cleaner technology from foreign and
private players

Simplification of Environmental clearance procedures for the industries

located in industrial estates

Encourage Common Effluent Treatment Plant

Encourage common captive power plant and steam generation unit

During relocation of units detailed action plan to be prepared based on

environmental risk assessment

change of technology

waste minimization

Small industries to get assistance from government

Further Research and development of cleaner technologies is proposed

A sense of humor is part of the art of leadership, of getting along with people, of getting things
done. Dwight D. Eisenhower
Tasteful humor is a key to success at work, but theres a good chance your co-workers arent
cracking jokes or packaging information with wit on a regular basisand your office could
probably stand to have a little more fun.
Humor, by its nature, tends to have an edge to it, so people typically tone it down at work,
says Laura Vanderkam, author of What the Most Successful People Do at Work (Portfolio, 2013),
and What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast (Portfolio, 2012). Its hard to do well
and easy to do badly. Plus, we all have a tendency to take ourselves way too seriously.

Michael Kerr, an international business speaker, president of Humor at Work, and author of The
Humor Advantage: Why Some Businesses are Laughing all the Way to the Bank (Dec. 2013),
says the amount or type of humor youll find in any given workplace depends almost entirely on
the culture. In workplaces that encourage people to be themselvesthat are less hierarchical and
more innovativepeople tend to be more open with their humor, he says. Even people who
arent always comfortable sharing their humor tend to do so in more relaxed environments where
the use of humor becomes second nature with everyones style.
