ST-Poly Technical Data

ST Poly Technical Data
ST-Poly, developed by our partner, Achilles Corporation of Japan, is a revolutionary conductive
base material unlike those made of conventional conductive filler type coatings such as
metallic powder, carbon or surfactant. It is composed of a general-purpose plastic material for
the base (ie: film, sheet, fiber), and a electron conjugated conductive polymer molecularly
bonded to the surface of the base material.
ST- Polys features are:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.

Conductive performance can be freely controlled within the range of 1 x 10 3 108 ohms.
It contains no chemical destaticizer, and thus does not bleed
It contains no heavy metals.
Transparency of the base material is maintained, allowing clear visibility when scanning or
visual identification of contents is required.
A wide range of materials (from film, sheet and fiber to even injection molded plastics) can
be "poly-plated" e.g. packaging, components, surfaces etc.
Humidity independent.
Attaching STPoly for the intended purpose can enhance physical properties of many base
materials. The physical properties of the base materials after ST-Poly processing are
unchanged and reproducible.
It is solvent resistant. Can be washed repeatedly in ultrasonic DI water cleaning systems,
alcohol based cleaning systems as well as solvent systems such as "Vertrel".

2. Conductive Mechanism

Central Corporation
ST-Poly Technical Data
As shown in the figure of the molecular structure below, electrical conduction of
polypyrrole series of polymers is induced by the transformation of electrical charge carried on
bipolaron (dication) and other molecules formed on the backbone chain of the polymers which
transform on the chain.

Anion

3. ST Poly Applications
Central Corporation together with Achilles Corporation manufactures the following ESD
Solutions using ST-Poly
1. Adhesive conductive film (protects peel film from ESD damage by tribo-charging)
A. Applications: Polarizing film, protective film for display base materials such as acrylic
plates and for electro-proofing materials such as windows of a clean room. This protective
film protects liquid crystals and ICs from ESD damage.

4. Static Dissipative Sheet for thermoforming / vacuum-forming

ST Poly is effective for treating general purpose molding sheets made from a wide range of
materials, e.g., APET, PS, PP, etc.

5. Conductive non-woven fabrics

Central Corporation
ST-Poly Technical Data
ST Poly treated conductive non-woven fabrics exhibit excellent antistatic performance.
Achilles manufactures the following conductive non-woven fabrics.
A. Spun bonded fabric
-Polyester, nylon
B. Felt Type
-Polyester, nylon
C. Multi-ultra fiber type
-Polyester, nylon
Applications:
Wiping cloth, Coverings for office appliances and equipment
6. ST Poly conductive fibers
Most of all types of textured yarn, spun yarn, filament yarn, and staple-fiber of acrylic, polyester
and polyamide series can serve as the base materials for ST Poly. Their features are:
A. Unlike those of metal plated fibers, they are excellent in flexibility and elongation.
B. Unlike metal plated fibers or copper sulfide plated fibers, they are dye-able with
disperse, basic and acid dyes.
C. Textile type and other similar weavings are especially excellent in static
dissipation.
7. ST-Poly Plated Molded Trays and Components
As a cleaner and lower cost solution to carbon filled plastics, ST-Poly can be attached to base
materials such as standard grade Polycarbonate, Nylon, PBT, PPS, PES, POM, PET, PP etc.
The results are clean, volume resistive parts, which are re-washable without contaminating
cleaning systems. Also, the transparent nature of ST-Poly plating makes visual identification of
contaminants possible unlike on black carbon-filled materials.
9. ST-Poly on Paper and Polyurethane
Our MA sheet is used as a dustless spacer sheet in our PROTOS horizontal wafer shipper unit.
Additionally paper used in cleanrooms such as Tyvek which is insulative in its basic state can
be "plated", resulting in CDM safe levels. Additionally polyurethane swabs and other cleanroom
materials can be plated with ST-Poly to produce ESD-safe, clean consumable products that
would otherwise present an ESD problem.
10. ST-Poly PP Document Holders
No hinges, metal required to make static dissipative, re-washable, transparent folders, badge
holders etc. excellent for transporting docs and sample components in cleanroom and factory.

Properties of ST-Poly
Electrical properties of ST-Poly in the case of a 0.1m layer poly plated onto a 50m thickness
general-purpose polyester film are shown below:
A. Dependence of surface resistance on humidity
As opposed to the ion conducting chemicals of conventional surfactants and alkyl
ammonium chloride series, ST-Poly is electronically conductive; and therefore, its
surface resistance is not affected by changes in humidity.
