Introduction
This program is based on the book, Passing the Ohio Ninth-Grade Proficiency Test, for
the purpose of test preparation. This program will benefit you in many ways. The
tutorial sections explain what will be covered on the test, how many questions, and how
the test is designed so you can become familiar with the test before you sit down to take
it. You will be able to select the learning outcomes, one by one, to practice simulated
proficiency test questions. Feedback will be given as you answer the questions.
The Practice Tests, styled in the format of the Ohio Proficiency tests, are offered for
Science, Math, Citizenship, Reading, and Writing. The program scores each practice test,
except for writing, and lets you know how well you did on each learning outcome. In
addition, teachers can use the Administrator program to track students progress in
completing the tutorial program by subject and learning outcome.
This software has been designed to be interactive and fun without distracting you from the
educational importance of the program. You will learn powerful strategies for success in
Passing the Ohio Ninth-Grade Proficiency Test.

Getting Started
How to Navigate
Before you explore each subject area, be sure to familiarize yourself with the How to
Navigate screens. On these pages, you will learn how to maneuver through the course as
well as review the language and format of the CD-ROM. You need to be familiar with
terms such as learning outcome and strand.
Tips and Hints
Throughout the tutorial program, you will often be able to select either a Tips or Hints
button. These buttons provide additional information or test-taking strategies to help
you respond correctly to a question.
Introductory Pages
Three or four pages of introductory material can be viewed at the beginning of each section.
You will receive valuable information from these pages, such as how many questions will be
on the proficiency test for each subject, what types of questions are used in the test, and how
the test is scored. In addition, this introduction re-emphasizes the skills needed to be
successful on the test.
Instructions
Instructions are bold, italic and appear at the bottom of the page or below the text. Read
the instructions carefully because they tell you what to do next.
Checkmarks
After you have finished each learning outcome, a yellow checkmark will appear on the
strand menu screen to identify the learning outcome as completed. Since records are then
stored each time you exit the course, these checkmarks will be visible next time you enter
the program with the same password. This helps you figure out what learning outcomes
you need to complete.

Getting Started (contd.)

Practice Test
You can choose to take a practice test at any time. For Science, Math, Citizenship, and
Reading the practice test is made up of 40 multiple choice questions. There are three
different tests for each subject area, so each time you access the test the questions will be a
little different. You can page through the practice test as much as you like, changing your
responses or double-checking your answers. Once you are satisfied with your responses,
simply hit the SCORE button and your test will be scored. Your test results will be
displayed, along with your strengths and weaknesses by learning outcome. The results DO
NOT tell you which specific question you answered correctly or incorrectly. The intent of
the results page is to let you know where more preparation is needed by learning outcome.
For example, lets say you got 0 out of 4 correct in one particular learning outcome. It is
clear that you need to review the learning outcome or work with supplemental materials to
strengthen preparation for that learning outcome.
For Writing, the practice test consists of two on-line writing exercises that are randomly
generated. A teacher or parent needs to grade this test. Once a test has been scored, it is
suggested that you review the CDs tutorial to review the learning outcomes you missed.
You also may wish to seek additional help from your teacher or parent.
Take Caps Lock Off
You should not work with the Caps Lock on because it will affect your answers.
Mouse vs. Keyboard vs. Note Paper
Regardless of the platform, you will use a mouse to select multiple choice responses and
your keyboard to answer fill-in questions. Windows 95, 98, NT, and Macintosh users
will use their keyboards for Writing and Test Anxiety questions. Spelling must be correct
in all writing questions in order to be recognized as a correct answer.

Directions for Students

Start the program by finding the 9thGrade folder on your hard drive. Double-click on the
diamond shaped icon and select one of the following:

PT9LOG95 for Windows 95, 98, or NT

PT9LOGPPC for PowerMac
PT9LOGST for all other Macs

This brings up the Logon screen. You must key in your teachers name (i.e., Mrs. Cox),
your first name, last name, and then a password. It is important that you pick a
password that is easy to type and remember. If you forget your password or the logon is
unsuccessful for some reason, the cursor will return to the teachers name field and you
can start again. After several tries, if you are still unsuccessful in logging on, you can quit
and have your teacher look up your password in your student folder. This folder is
automatically set-up the first time you log on to maintain your student records. (See pg.
11, Student Data Folder Location)
The first screen you will see is the How to Navigate screen. Read through this
information carefully so you will understand how the course works. Follow the
navigational instructions.
Next you can select a subject from the Main Menu. In addition to the required
proficiency test subjects, you will find the Test Anxiety and Test Taking Strategies
sections. You should go through these sections first because they will help improve your
test-taking skills and score on the Ohio Proficiency Test.
Each of the required proficiency test subjects takes approximately 30-40 minutes to
complete. Make sure you pay close attention to the introduction at the beginning of each
subject. Once you have read through the introductory pages, the Strand Menu will
appear. You need to select a Strand and then a Learning Outcome. You will have a
brief review and explanation of each learning outcome, followed by simulated proficiency
test questions. You will be given two attempts to answer each question correctly. Each
attempt provides immediate feedback to prompt or explain the correct answer. The
Writing and Test Anxiety sections have a writing function for completing the sections
exercises. You need to be sure and type your name on the exercise before you begin.

suggested that you review the CDs tutorial to review the learning outcomes you missed.
You also may wish to seek additional help from your teacher or parent.
Note to Macintosh Users: Macintosh users cannot print exercises from the program in
the Writing and Test Anxiety sections. After completing the exercise, you must select the
SAVE button instead of the PRINT button. Once you quit the program, either you or your
teacher can locate your data folder and find the exercise, open it and print. (See pg. 11,
Student Data Folder Location)

Directions for Teachers

There is a separate program for teachers called the Administrator, which tracks each
students progress through the tutorial sections. In addition, teachers can track the
students three most recent practice test scores.
Start the program by finding the 9thGrade folder on your hard drive. Double-click on the
diamond shaped icon and select one of the following:

ADMIN95 for Windows 95, 98, or NT

ADMINPPC for PowerMac
ADMINST for all other Macs

This brings up the Logon screen. You must type in your name and password. Make
sure you use the name that students call you so you can link to their files appropriately.
Also, it is important that you pick a password that is easy to type and remember. If you
forget your password or the logon is unsuccessful for some reason, the cursor will return
to the teachers name field and you can start again. After several tries, if you are still
unsuccessful in logging on, you can quit and look up your password in your teacher
folder. This folder is automatically set-up the first time you log on to maintain your
student records. To locate the folder:
Macintosh:
Go to the hard drive System folder/Preferences/RunA3Mdata/9thGrade/Admin
and find the folder with your name. The logon information is found in the document
named UserInfo.txt.
Windows:
Go to the Start menu, select Programs, then Windows Explorer to find
Windows/A3w_data/9thGrade/Admin and find the folder with your name. The
logon information is found in the document named UserInfo.txt.
Once the program begins, you can view each of the students records. You can browse
from student to student or take a detailed look at a particular students progress. You can
delete a student record by selecting the CLEAR button at the top of the screen. This will
only delete the current student record. You can print a student record by selecting the
PRINT button at the top of the screen, or you can print a specific test or answer key. If
the Print Window is overlaying the Administrator Window, click on the top of the Print
Window and move it to another location on the screen.
Since you need to manually score the Writing practice tests, they are not included in this
program. Use the file WritAns.PDF to grade the students written responses.

10

Student Data Folder Location

While using this program, a dedicated folder is created for each student. Student logon
information, including name and password, is stored in this folder. The folders are named
according to student name. Completed Test Anxiety and Writing exercises are also stored
in this folder.
The location of the student data folder is hidden on the hard drive to offer some security.
A teacher may not want everyone to know where the student information is stored. To
locate the folder:
Macintosh:
Go to the hard drive System folder/Preferences/RunA3Mdata/9thGrade/Data
and find the folder with the student name. The logon information is found in the
document named UserInfo.txt.
Windows:
Go to the Start menu, select Programs, then Windows Explorer to find
Windows/A3w_data/9thGrade/Data and find the folder with the student name.
The logon information is found in the document named UserInfo.txt. The Writing
and Test Anxiety exercises are numbered inside the folder. Writing responses will
be named by the writing prompts number (i.e. 9wlo1.txt, 9wlo2.txt, 9wlo3.txt,
etc.) and Test Anxiety responses will be named by the activity number. (i.e.
9anx1.txt, 9anx2.txt, 9anx3.txt, etc.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some questions that previous program users have asked and the answers to
those questions. If you have a question about the Passing the Ohio Ninth-Grade
Proficiency Test software program that is not listed, please call technical support at
1-877-727-7464, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. You may
also contact us through our web site at www.eapublishing.com.
Can you print from the CD-ROM?
Yes, certain portions of the software have the printing option. You can print a practice
test score or you can write and print an essay from the Test Anxiety and Writing
sections. When you are asked to type a response to writing prompt you should always
type your name and the exercise number. This will help identify your essay once it has
been printed so you can pass it to a parent, teacher, or fellow student to be graded.
How do I fix the print option error?
If you have trouble printing a file on the Macintosh, do the following:
1. Turn off the virtual memory located in Control Panel Memory.
2. Go to the Print Option screen or choose Find Background Printing.
3. Reset to Foreground Printing.
How does the software track the student?
As you complete each learning outcome, it is identified with a checkmark. The next time
you log on to the program using the same password the checkmarks will show what
learning outcomes you have completed. The teacher can also check a students progress
in the Administrator program.
Will the Mac version of the software work on an Apple LC2 with System 7.0?
The program may appear too large to fit on the screen, limiting the use of program page
controls. Adjust the monitor setting to a resolution of 640x480.
What if there is not enough room on the disk?
If you do not have 35 MB of hard drive space, you must work off the CD. (See pg. 4-5,
Installation Instructions) Your results will not be written to the CD, but will be saved to
the hard drive. The program is fully functional and can be taken from a Math classroom
to a Science classroom, for example, without installing the program onto any computer.
How do I load Wave files?
While installing the software on a Windows 95, 98, or NT computer, the message Wave
files will not load may appear if your computers audio driver is not working properly.
You should contact your technical support representative and have the audio driver
repaired.

12

Frequently Asked Questions (contd.)

Why does the program view expand off the screen?
If the program view expands off the screen and there is no access to the program control
buttons, you need to alter your monitor resolution. The program is set up for a monitor
resolution setting of 640x480. Check the control panel on your computer and adjust the
monitor or display setting to a 640x480 resolution. Also, check your font settings on the
control panel and make sure you are using small fonts.
Why do my screens overlay each other?
If you move too quickly through the screens, you may overlay previous screens. Make
sure you take the time to read and interact with the program.
How do I get the program to work on Windows 98?
If you have trouble using the program on a Windows 98 computer, it is because Active
Desktop is loaded on the computer. To deactivate the Windows 98 Active Desktop, do
the following:
1. Right-click anywhere on the desktop, select Properties, and then select the Web tab.
2. Select the View my Active Desktop as a web page check box to clear it.
3. Select OK.
How do I uninstall the program?
The uninstall procedures vary depending on the platform.
For Windows 95, 98, and NT, do the following:
1. Select Start, Settings, and then Taskbar.
2. Select the Start Menu Programs tab and then select Remove.
3. Highlight the 9thGrade folder and then select Remove.
4. Select Close and then OK.
5. Next, select Start, Programs, and then Windows Explorer.
6. Highlight the 9thGrade folder and then click the Delete key.
7. Highlight the data files and then click the Delete key. (See pg. 11, Student Data
Folder Location)
For Macintosh, just do the following:
1. Select the 6thGrade folder and move it to the Trash.
2. Select the data files and move them to the Trash. (See pg. 11, Student Data
