1. Transportation Engineering
Transportation engineering is a major component of the both civil engineering and
mechanical engineering. It is also a sub-discipline of industrial engineering and civil engineering.
The responsibility of transportation engineer is to plan, design, build, maintain and operate
system of transport to provide safe, and convenient movement of things and people.
2. Highway Engineering
Highway engineering is a discipline branching from civil engineering which involves the
maintenance and operation of roads bridges, and tunnels as well as their planning, design, and
construction. Highway engineering ensure the safeness and effectiveness of transportation of
people and goods.
3. Traffic Engineering
Traffic engineering is a branch of civil engineering that uses engineering principles in
managing the movement of people and goods in roads. It focuses primarily on efficient traffic
flow and safeness, such as road geometry, cross walks and sidewalks. Traffic signs marking and
traffic lights are also involve in this field. Traffic engineering deals with the functional part of
transportation system, except the infrastructures provided.
4. Railroad Engineering
Railroad Engineering focuses on the design, construction and operation of all types
of railway systems. It encompasses a wide range of engineering disciplines, including civil
engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial
engineering and production engineering. Railroad or rail transport is a fixed or permanent road
consisting of metal rails which is commonly for trains or motorized vehicles.

5. Airport Engineering
Airport engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the construction,
management, operation and maintenance of airport. They provide the landing and takeoff,
loading and unloading, servicing, maintenance, and storage of aircraft. Airport engineers analyze
survey reports, maps and blueprints like civil engineers.
6. Pavement Engineering
Pavement engineering is a branch of civil engineering that uses engineering techniques to
design and maintain flexible and rigid pavements. Knowledge of soils, hydraulics, and material
properties are important in this field. Rehabilitation and maintenance of existing pavements as
well as the development of new contractions is also part of pavement engineering. Maintenance
often involves using engineering judgment to make maintenance repairs with the highest longterm benefit and lowest cost.
7. Harbor Engineering
Harbor engineering focused exclusively on planning, permitting and designing waterfront
and coastal structures. This includes the facilities for ships to discharge or receive cargo and
passengers.
