Wind Power Turbine Project

I.

INTRODUCTION

Energy is an important part of any countrys economy. Today major

energy needed in a country is achieved by using conventional
sources of energy. It includes coal, natural gas, nuclear fuel, etc. But
these sources are limited on earth .
Looking towards the environment effect as thermal plant
releases smoke and ash which causes air pollution. Nuclear power
plant releases radioactive waste which are hazardous and cause air
and land pollution. Due to these factor we concern our idea toward
non conventional sources of energy. Non conventional sources of
energy are environmental friendly, easily available on earth .
Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into a useful form of
energy, such as using wind turbines to make electricity, wind mills
for mechanical power, wind pumps for pumping water or drainage,
or sails to propel ships.
In addition the main advantages of wind energy are that this sort of
energy is free pollution and eco-friendly. Also, a wind power turbine
does not require any additional source of energy for power
generation.
At the begin of this year a group of WinAid Corporation leading by
Mr Werkamp visited the school and offered the installation of the
wind power turbine, but for a highly expensive price for the school.
Luckily, a few months ago a group of Windaid volunteers came to
visited us

and offered us

the wind power turbine for a more

attainable price.
However, the major benefits for our school would be that Fleming
will became in a leading example for an energy conscious and
environmentally friendly school. In our school it should be a perfect
project for the year of sustainability. Fleming College is gaining a
wind turbine at a very subsidised rate due to the volunteer
involvement. Unique education and insight into renewable energies
for the students .Foundation for knowledge on renewable energy for
students to carry with them into their future careers and lives.

Reduction of the schools energy use (and hence reduced energy

bills).

SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES
By means of a group of international volunteers hosted by WindAid, will
come to Fleming College for the construction and installation of smallscale wind turbines also to bring the students valuable information on the
subjects of renewable energy and the environment. This will be carried
out through a series of classes with the students (hosted by the WindAid
volunteers) and a number of practical workshops, culminating in the
presentation and exhibition of a 2kW wind turbine that will be later
installed on the building roof to power the two science classrooms.
Background: WindAid is a non-profit organisation that works with
international volunteers in the construction and installation of small-scale
wind turbines for communities in Peru.

Timeline:
Monday 18th October WindAid volunteers arrive in Peru
Monday 25th October (for 4 weeks) Lectures and workshops begin during
normal timetabled classes in the science department
Weekend 13-14th November We will come to the school to install the
turbine for the exhibition.
Monday 15th November Exhibition week, with presentation of the wind
turbine in the school grounds.
Thursday 18th November We will plan to install the wind turbine on the
roof in its permanent location.

Wind Turbine: The volunteers will spend 3 weeks building the wind
turbine in the WindAid workshop in Moche. The completed wind turbine
will be exhibited outside the reception at the front of the school for short
period before being installed permanently on the roof.
The wind turbine on exhibition will be on a 6m high tower. The wind
turbine will then be moved to its permanent installation on the building
roof toward the end of the week (Thursday 18th) or during the following
week. The wind turbine when installed on the roof will be on a 3m high
tower.

Once on the roof, the wind turbine will be used to power the two science
classrooms as a demonstration of clean energy and a carbon neutral
classroom.

Wind turbine safety: Although the spinning blades of the wind turbine
may appear dangerous, the turbine poses no danger and there is
absolutely no risk of blades falling off or the wind turbine falling down.
However, we recommend that during the exhibition week, a temporary
fence is put around the wind turbine to prevent students playing and
climbing on the structure. This fence would be the responsibility of
Fleming College to install.
Questions:
Is it possible for Science department to arrange a field trip to visit the
WindAid workshop in Moche to see where the wind turbines are built?
Costs: Fleming College could pay the amount of $1200 ( cost of the
wind turbine), with an initial payment of $500 now and the remaining
payment of $700 in February.
Fleming College will also be buying 6 small wind turbine kits at a cost of
$150.
