Pickling Procedure

Engineering

AJM23-PP-DM-2800

Scope
This procedure covers the requirement for the pickling of Stainless Steel surfaces in order to
attain a metallic bright surface evenly resistant to corrosion.

2.

Procedure
2.1. Before Pickling
2.1.1. Remove heavy deposits of oil grease, soil, drawing compound, welding spatter
and foreign matter by splashing down water or fat solving additives, where
required also by grinding, brushing, etc. Small quantities of such foreign matter
may be removed in the pickling tanks provided no detrimental residue remains
on the surface.
2.1.2. Remove heavy deposits of rust , rust scale and all paint. Rust deposits which can
be removed without unduly prolonging the pickling time may be removed in the
pickling tanks.
2.2. Pickling Method
2.2.1. Pickling in hot or cold solutions of sulfuric, hydrochloric (muriatic), or
phosphoric acid to which sufficient inhibitor has been added to minimize attack
on the base metal, followed by adequate rinsing in hot water above 140F
(60C)
2.2.2. Pickling in 5% -10% (by weight) sulfuric acid, containing an inhibitor, at a
minimum of 140F (60C) until all rust and scale is removed, then thorough
rinsing in clean water, then immersion for one to five minutes in 1%-2% (by
weight) phosphoric acid containing about 0.3 % - 0.5% iron phosphate, at a
temperature of about 180F ( 80C).
2.2.3

Pickling in 5% (by volume) sulfuric acid at 170-80F (75-80C), with

sufficient inhibitor added to minimize attack on the base Metal, until all
rust and scale is removed, followed by two minutes rinse in hot water at 170180F (75-80C). Next immerse the pickled and rinsed steel for at least two
minutes in hot, inhibitive solution maintained above 190F (85C) and
containing about 0.75% sodium dichromate and about 0.5% ortho phosphoric
acid.

2.3. Do not exceed a dissolved iron content 6% in sulfuric acid bath, or 10% in hydrochloric
(muriatic) acid baths.
2.4. Use only clean water or steam condensate for solutions and rinses. Supply rinse tank
continuously with new water. Do not permit the total amount of acid or dissolved salts due
to carry over to exceed two grams per liter (0.2% by weight).

2.5. Do not stack pickled steel surfaces in contact with one another until completely dry.
2.6

Small items and vessels are pickled by dipping in vat with pickling solution, then rinsed,
neutralized and passivated.

2.7

The surface of large vessels are pickled by using acid proof sponges or brushes to facilitate
the pickling operation, the vessels should be placed in a horizontal position by using roller
support.

2.8

To pickle large vessels, needing only pickling of their welding seam area, a pickling paste is
used. The pickling paste is prepared from the pickling solution by addition of powdered
quartz. The surfaces to be pickled are coated with a 5 to 10 mm thick paste layer which is
left there to take effect for about 30 minutes. The pickling paste is splashed down
neutralization and passivation solutions should be applied using a sponge and be washed off
after a short period of reaction time.
