Exercise 1:

Functional Passing Exercise Innervating Tactical Movements


Goal: This soccer passing drill focuses on innervating basic tactical movements and
practising cooperation between players.

Organisation
Equipment and players are arranged as shown. Players change their positions
continuously after their passes.

Description

This soccer passing drill focuses on combinative play and cooperating between players.
Variations are principles of the attacking formations. This exercise also develops
attackers movements, contact between midfielders and attackers. Four variations can be
seen.

Set Up: Equipment and players are arranged as shown. Distance of the sticks is at about
4-5 meters. Sticks are used to make the task lifelike, raise difficulty and draw passing
channels. Players change position continuously in alphabetical order.

Exercise 2:

Building Attacks in a 4:1:3:2


Formation
Goal: Practising and innervating tactical movements. Breaking through the defending line
in the middle with cominative play.

Organisation
Place the players into a 4:1:3:2 formation. Defenders' positions are not involved into this
soccer drill. Players change position periodically when it is needed.

Description
The soccer drill contains seven variations. In every situation players have to take care of
communicatian (verbal and non-verbal), their movements without ball, contra movements
before getting the ball, correct rhytm of the play, pace of the passes. This drill focuses on
building attacks from the midfield. To prepare attcaks with tactical movements in
defending line is an other training's aim.

Set Up: Equipment and players are arranged as shown. Players' positions fit the 4:1:3:2
formation.

Exercise 3:

Play the Other Side

Goal: Finding deep passing channels between defenders at game speific speed and
pressure.

Organisation
Cones are used to create an approx. 15x25 meters area with a 5 meters defending zone
in it. Identify 8 attacking players and 7 defenders. You can put a neutral player into the
game to help the attackers or the defenders. Split the attacking team into two and place
them into the two playing areas as shown. Two defenders are in each playing area and 3
in the defending zone as shown. Change players' position periodically.
Load: 90-120 sec.
Rest: 90-120 sec.

Description
The attacking team of four tries to keep possession in a playing area against two
defenders. Team in possession tries to pass the ball over the defending zone between
the three defenders under pressure. When pass is completed players on this side have
resting period. Three defenders in the middle turn around and try to defend the pass from
the other direction. Progression is the same. When defenders win the ball they have to
dribble out from the area and the game starts from the attackers.

Small Sided Soccer Drill

Coaching Points
To be able to do this small sided soccer drill successfully games should be played on an
adequate area for different age groups. We always have to consider the players technical
skills and their cognitive abilities. Besides this the quality of the pitch is also very
important. If its necessary we can change the size of the area during the game.

Exercise 4:

8v8 Formation Specific Game


Goal: Performing the main tactical elements of the training in a game situation.

Organisation
Mark a 40x60 meters playing area as shown. Put goals onto the baselines and a keeper
in it. Identify two teams of eight with different colors. Place the players into a special
formation which suits the 4:1:3:2 formatioan as shown.

Description
Ordinary soccer game without any special restrictions or rules. Teams have to perform
the tactical variations learnt at the training in game situations.
