5.1 Introduction

The increasing specialization in science and technology has resulted in the proliferation of
subject-oriented journals directed to specialist audiences. This means that researchers have at
their disposal more channels for communicating the results of their research, but also that
finding information may be a time-consuming process.
Today journals are the most frequently used and most important primary information
sources in most scientific disciplines. Their great advantage over books is the frequency of
publication; they are more up-to-date than information appearing in books. There are several
journals in existence which are devoted exclusively to finite element techniques and in addition
there are many others which contain material of interest on the theory and applications of these
methods.
Journals have their origin in the 17th century, when scientists were dissatisfied with the
printed book as a medium of communication. During the past two decades the number of
scientific and technical journals has grown at a furious pace. Figure 5.1 illustrates the growth of
scientific/technical journals and abstract journals as a function of time.
It is estimated that in the year 2000 there will be about one million scientific and technical
journals and as a consequence several problems are arising. The number of journals has
continued to increase but the actual use is becoming more restricted. Another criticism from
the authors is the delay between submission of a paper to a journal and its publication, which is
at least six months, and very often more. To close this short discussion wastefulness may be
raised as another point of criticism. Many published papers are not read by anybody, they are
published just for the record. A UNESCO study has shown that a single paper in a highly
specialized journal may interest no more than 10% of the readers from the subject area of that
journal. In addition, too many papers contain redundant information. It is estimated that only
about 10% of the published scientific/technical literature presents any new ideas or facts--the
rest is repeated information.
At present, about 3500 papers on finite elements and their applications are published
annually. To find information in this large volume of papers is much more difficult than in the

case of books. One positive factor in the process of dissemination is that there is always a small
number of so called "core" journals containing a large portion of papers dealing with the
subject of interest. Bradford's Law of Scattering roughly states that of all the papers on a
subject, one third are to be found in journals on that subject, one third in journals on related
subjects and the last third in unexpected journals. References in papers published in "core"
journals will lead the reader to other sources outside this group.
It is quite important for every researcher/engineer wanting to be up-to-date with the current
stream of literature to try to find out what are the "core" journals in his/her field of interest.
H e / s h e has to pay a great deal of attention to them. The listing of journals and the annotations
in this section should help solve this problem.
This chapter contains a directory of currently published journals in which papers on the
theory and applications of the finite element method are more or less frequently published. The
journals are arranged by subject into two main categories:
- journals dealing with numerical methods in general, including finite element methods;
- special interest journals.
Entries in each category are listed alphabetically by journal title. For each entry the following
information is provided:
- journal title;
- the year of first volume published;
- frequency of publication;
name of publisher (commercial publisher or sponsoring organization; for a list of publishers
with addresses, see Appendix A);
name(s) of editor(s);
ISSN (International Standard Serial Number)
A brief description of the contents and editorial focus of the publication is provided at the
end of each entry, as well as a selection of papers on finite elements published in the last two
years. The compilation includes not only journals published by known publishing companies
but also those from professional associations such as AIAA, ASME, ASCE, AMS and others.
The list of journals can serve the needs of two main categories of readers, namely
researchers/scientists and the academic staff. This directory of journals can also help the
reader to identify the most appropriate journal for the publication of his/her research results.
Each journal in this presentation contains a reference code, consisting of a three-letter
combination and a number. These may be used to access the entry from the A u t h o r / E d i t o r
Index or from Appendix E (List of journals).
For additional journals not included here, the reader should consult the conventional
periodical directories, such as Ulrich's and the Standard Periodical Directory.
In offering this compilation, the author recognizes the transitory nature of the information.
Specific data for any journal may have become obsolete by the time of publication of this
survey. New journals may appear, there may be changes in the title of a journal, frequency of
publication, a journal may be subdivided into more than one journal, etc.
