History. Each student successfully completing this course of study will be recognized as an
American History Scholar at graduation and receive a Gilder Lehrman Institute Certificate of
Distinction along with his/her diploma.

In 2003, Paint Branch became one of four county schools to attain recognition as a member of the
Academy of Finance by offering an academically rigorous college-preparatory program from the
National Academy Foundation that encourages high school students to take courses in financial studies
and related disciplines. Paint Branch also implemented a new Naval JROTC unit in 2003. Paint Branch

Honors Programs for Grades 9-12:

The Honors Program consists of Advanced Placement courses and honors work in designated courses.
The honors program is designed to provide appropriate instructional challenges for academically talented
and motivated students. While in some cases the objectives for honors work may be the same for regular
courses, in honors level work objectives are pursued in different ways, covered in more depth, and
require greater use of abstract and higher level thinking skills. In addition, students in the honors

PBHS Profile Page 7 of 12

program are expected to work more independently and may undertake research and writing of a more
rigorous and sophisticated nature than required of other students.

Selection for Honors work is based on course prerequisites and gifted and talented criteria-- Grades, test
results, teacher and counselor recommendation, student interest, and work samples. A student is not
selected for the honors program as a whole, but rather for a particular honors course.

Honors work can be completed in Grades 9-12 in English, foreign languages, mathematics, science, social
studies, and selected courses in art and computer science. All work in advanced placement courses and in
the advanced level courses is considered to be honors work. The courses listed in the third group, while
taken by a wide range of students, are courses in which honors work is also available in the Montgomery
County Public Schools (MCPS) curriculum. They replace courses and course selections which in the past
have carried designations such as "Rapid Learner," "Able Learner," and "Gifted/Talented" in grades 9-12.
