Overview
Aspen Adsim is an easy-to-use flowsheet simulator for the design,
simulation and optimization of industrial adsorption processes including
refinery hydrogen purification, air separation, oxygen production, drying,
VOC emission control, solvent recovery, and reactive adsorption processes,
etc. It is well-proven product that allows user to develop and identify
optimal adsorbents, design better process cycle, and improve plant
operations. Since 1991, Aspen Adsim has been uniquely recognized as the
only one commercial process simulator in adsorption. At present, it serves
more than 50 organizations world wide including Praxair, BOC, Air
Products, UOP, and Los Alamos National Laboratory, etc.
Easy Simulation and Cyclic Process Management
Aspen Adsim provides Cycle Organizer, which supports user to construct
his/her process cycle very easily therefore the user can test process
performance quickly. A little more technically speaking, Cycle Organizer
handles cyclic events (such as process condition change, valve switching,
flow reversal, etc) during dynamic simulation. In addition, user can define
any number of cycles, each containing any number of process steps (such as
production, backfill, pressurization, equalization and purge), and the
duration of each process step can be controlled by either timer or any
monitored event. Besides, any ramped changes during process can easily be
introduced by Cycle Organizer.
Wide Choice of Modeling Assumptions Including Adsorption Isotherms
Due to the dedicated experiences over 15 years of serving various industries
as well as academic institutes, Aspen Adsim supports many featured
adsorption theories in conjunction with equipment and adsorbent packing
geometries, multiple adsorbents layered bed, axial and radial dispersions
and mass/energy/momentum balances.

In addition, Aspen Adsim allows user to select various sorption

rate models including rigorous particle diffusion models with pore, surface
and combined diffusion resistance coefficients. As for adsorption equilibrium
prediction, Aspen Adsim supports wide range of standard isotherms from
pore filling theory, e.g. Dubinin isotherms, to thermodynamic equilibrium
models, e.g. Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory, with some more advanced
technique such as extra consideration of gas phase non-ideality and
isotherm-type-free option. Furthermore, with a little amount of effort, the
user can include additional equations to implement custom models for
sorption rate and equilibrium isotherm the AspenTech technical support
team can help with such customizations on request.
Parameter Estimation from Process/Experimental Data
Aspen Adsim provides comprehensive estimation tool to determine key
design parameters, such as heat and mass transfer coefficients as well as
equilibrium constants, through regression against either dynamic or static
experimental data.

Process Integration
Aspen Adsim uses Aspen Properties for rigorous and consistent physical
property data. In addition, Aspen Adsim flowsheets can be combined with
Aspen Dynamic flowsheets, e.g. the simulation of upstream reactors or for
connecting pre-purification unit to a downstream distillation train.
Direct Determination of Cyclic Steady-State
Complete discretization of space and time for an adsorption cycle enables
user to determine the cyclic steady-state condition without dynamic
simulation cycles. This modeling paradigm is currently recognized as the
most enhanced feature of Aspen Adsim that allows use of steady-state
estimation and perturbation studies to aid in the rapid design and
optimization of adsorption cycles. Furthermore, the flowsheet can be
exported to Aspen Plus therefore user can have full benefit of steady-state
modeling for their plant simulation with rigorous adsorption process models.
