Introduction
Single-ended loop testing (SELT), like metallic testing from the POTS world, is an
automated way of testing a DSL loop from one end of the line, either from the central office
(CO) or, less likely, from the subscriber's end. Unlike dual-ended loop testing (DELT), where
someone, usually the operator's technician, must install a DSL modem or some sort of test device
at the consumer's end of the line, SELT does not require a technician or any equipment at the
subscriber site.
There are mainly two types of SELT, which are Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR)
and Frequency Domain Reflectometry (FDR). The excitation signal can be a pulse in TDR or
discrete multitone (DMT) symbols in FDR.
Frequency Domain Reflectometry (FDR)
Each tone is sounded separately & process the echo
Each tone can be sounded at a high power level
Requires more time
More accurate
Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR)
All the tones are sounded together & echo is processed
Power is a constraint
Requires less time
Accuracy is less
Power-line communications systems operate by adding a modulated carrier signal to the
wiring system. Different types of power-line communications use different frequency bands.
Since the power distribution system was originally intended for transmission of AC power at
typical frequencies of 50 or 60 Hz, power wire circuits have only a limited ability to carry higher
frequencies.

Advantages and Improvements

The possibility of DSL over power lines has received considerable attention recently to
cater to broadband distribution within the premises of a home and in the local area served by a
substation. The power line has a very different gauge and topology compared to traditional
twisted pair copper used for telephone lines.
In the previous part of the project we had successfully simulated the FDR
implementation on telephone lines.
This project extends the concepts of the SELT algorithm to estimate the topology of
-power lines to employ broadband communication on these lines.Specifically we are
implementing the hybrid SELT which is a combination of both TDR and FDR.
