Voodoo Dolls
1998 By John R. Milam
Spells, Curses, Hex, Jinx, Santeria, Witchcraft
Dolls have, for centuries and in many cultures, been used for spells and other magical
purposes. They have been called by many names: wanga dolls, voodoo dolls, poppets, trouble
dolls etc. The common image that most have is from 'B' grade Hollywood horror films. There
the voodoo doll is used to cause illness, pain & harm to the person whose image it represents.
Voodoo dolls can be used for this purpose, but there are many other, more positive, uses for
them.
Historically, dolls have been made from many various materials: cloth, feathers, straw, wax,
fur, hides, etc. They can be of almost any color or material, as long as they help the spell
worker create a link to person or purpose of the 'work' or spell. Traditionally, it is believed that
the more associations between the doll and the person or goal, the more effective the magic.
There are two main traditional ways to use the doll. The first, and most obvious, is to have it
represent a person to whom the worker acts upon, more or less, by proxy. The second use is to
have the doll represent a spirit or 'fetch' which will perform works on the Practitioners behalf.
Our dolls can be used in both ways.
