Job Description

Overview
The purpose of this position is to carry out weekly Relief Bus & Dont Walk By
outreaches to the poor & homeless of the New York City metropolitan area. Direct
supervision will be under Director of Outreach Josiah Haken. There are two tiers of this
position depending on experience: Associate Outreach Team Leader and Senior
Outreach Team Leader.
Preparation
Daily duties include preparing soup and beverages, loading vehicles with supplies and
food, and directing volunteers.
Volunteer Training
Volunteers who come receive an orientation either at our base or at the outreach
location. Outreach Team members brief and train teams daily on the outreach, giving
them rules and tips on how to participate in the outreach.
Connections
During the outreach, people will need to meet with a Senior Outreach Team Leader to
get connected to resources such as shelter, job information, detox, and rehab. As a
senior leader you will responsible for interviewing them and writing referrals to meet that
specific need with an appropriate resource. An associate leader will be responsible for
supporting the senior leader in the above function.
Ministry
Outreach Team members regularly encourage people who come to The Relief Bus by
sharing the gospel, listening to people in need, praying for them, and loving those who
are hurting.
Community
All staff participates in regular Tuesday morning meetings for a time of worship, prayer,
discipleship, and organizational updates. These are key times of community building,
deepening of relationships, and accountability that create a culture of interdependence.
Work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday. When leading daytime outreaches, the
schedule is 7:00am to 4:00pm. When leading nighttime outreaches, the schedule is
3:00pm to 11:00pm.

New York City Relief Team Members raise their own support to work here as urban
missionaries. Our Christian organization provides in-depth training for staff members to
accomplish that. The position does include housing or a housing allowance and health
insurance. Potential benefits also include a stipend depending on experience. The
position would require a minimum commitment of one year. Our staff is a dynamic and
diverse team that lives near our base of operations in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
New York City Relief is a Christian ministry that has been helping the homeless in the
New York City metro area for over 20 years through The Relief Bus outreach. The Relief
Bus outreach consists of two former school buses now customized into mobile
homeless resource centers. The Relief Bus serves delicious soup and fresh Portuguese
rolls to draw people in and make friends. Once staff and volunteers build trust, we try to
connect the poor and homeless to shelter, job training/employment, medical help,
drug/alcohol rehabilitation and a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Parameters for Relief Bus Staff Consideration


Concerning the following parameters, the applicant must have a proven track record in
these areas and be able to show verifiable references. This does not mean that the
applicant would have to have a perfect level of achievement, but they should have
attained a considerable amount of success in the areas listed below.
1. Godly lifestyle- Is the person living a lifestyle of purity and integrity in accordance
to the Bible?
2. Responsibility- Is the person able to follow through?
3. Teamwork- Is the person able to work in harmony as part of a team? Are they
able to resolve conflict?
4. Past experience- Has the person done this kind of work before?
5. Leadership capacity- Can the person train, mentor, coordinate, supervise or
oversee others?
6. Key needed skills- Does the person have unique skills that are vital to our
organization?
7. Problem solving skills- Can the person navigate and overcome challenges or
obstacles?
8. Sobriety- Does the person have victory in areas of life controlling addictions?
9. House in order- Is there stability in the management of the family life, marriage
and children? Are finances, budgeting and money management in order?
10. Formal education- Is there an ample amount of formal training to perform basic
tasks and skills?
11. Support raising agreement- Is the person willing to be trained in fundraising and
finally, able to raise enough personal support before and during time of service to
sustain his/her personal/family budget?
12. Health- Is the persons physical, mental and emotional health strong enough to
work consistently?
13. Spiritual maturity- Is the person actively engaged in a lifestyle of worship, service
and intimacy with God?

14. Ability to produce- Is the person able to contribute significantly overall to the
organization?
15. Humility- Is the person teachable and able to take direction? Will they trust the
decisions made by leadership?
16. Self-starter- Is the person proactive in finding what needs to be done and doing it
without being instructed?
17. Calling- Does the person feel a specific call to this organization and does NYCR
leadership confirm this call? Are they willing to enter into a probationary time of
service as part of the process?
