TEACHERS TOOLBOX
Work Smart, Not Hard

Are you constantly tired from your daily grind inside the classroom, leaving you with zapped energy
to do other equally important things like writing lesson plans and checking papers? Worse, are you also
left with no drive to fulfill your other roles like that of being a spouse, parent, friend, and many more?

Dont despair, there is a solution. Teachers have to have the time to smell the roses. Hence, they have
to learn how to work smart and not hard! Easier said than done, you might say, you see, it really can be
done.

What cause teachers to be exhausted in the classroom? According to clinical psychologist and author
of best-selling classroom management books, Fred Jones, there are three key areas which trigger stress
for a teacher: discipline, instruction and motivation.

All three key areas, if handled efficiently, can make teaching not only fulfilling but enjoyable as well.
And how can this be done? You guessed it right: through effective classroom management! This skill,
however, like all life skills cannot be learned overnight. It takes constant and consistent practice to master.
To give you a birds eye view, here are the salient points where you need to work smartly:
1. Discipline How do you make students quit disruptive behaviour so they get busy and learn? What
can you do to get your hands and attention off them and save yourself from stress and instead do what
you are tasked to do, which is to facilitate learning for all? According to Mr. Jones, you have to focus on
four things:
Classroom structure This does not only refer to the physical set-up (seat plan, chair arrangement
and the like), but also includes the instructional and motivational strategies, classroom rules,
standards, outlines and procedures.
Setting limitations This can be translated to: meaning business or saying what you mean and
meaning what you say. This has to be articulated very clearly on the very first day of the school year.
Responsibility training -This means empowering students into making choices and then teaching
them to make good ones afterwards (for example, using more cooperative learning strategies
which are well facilitated is one way of empowering students because their learning becomes their
responsibility and they do so by doing).
Backup system This refers to the schools discipline code, which can be resorted to when a push
turns into a shove; but remember sending a student to the prefect of discipline or the principals office
is only a temporary respite and not a permanent remedy.
2. Instruction How do you develop students to become independent learners and maximize their rate
of learning? Do you manage and supervise students by walking around and not just staying in front?
Can you work the crowd so that students are active rather than passive learners? Do you structure
your lessons into: input, output, input, output, input, output and not a long period of input (long lecture)
during which time you already lost your crowd to boredom, day-dreaming and slacking off?
3. Motivation How do you give students a reason to work harder and become more conscientious
learners? How do you help build their study habit?
Next time around when you feel like giving up on your chosen vocation, take a long, hard look at how
you integrate discipline, instruction and motivation in the classroom.

The secret is finally out: there is truly no secret! DW

they learn to deposit their treasure in

This series is designed to help children
recognize the real values from the false

reject the trash. Scripture-based stories,

This Bible-based textbook series is the product
of our conviction that for a child to have a
strong foundation in life, he must be firmly
rooted and grounded in the Word of God. A
child greatly profits from good role models,

TEACHERS TOOLBOX
Resources for the 21st Century Mentors
Lets face it, extra time is something that teachers do not always have. Thus, they must
work smartly and not attempt to reinvent the wheel when there is no need to do so.
For instance, teachers must realize that technology is something they could capitalize on.
The Internet for one is a mine field of teacher resources. Here are some, which according to
educatorstechnology.com should be within the radar of every 21st century school mentor.
1.) Teachers Network

Teachers Network provides lesson plans,

classroom specials, teacher designed activities for different subjects and many other
resources.

2.) Education World

This is another great website for teachers. It
provides teaching tips, lesson plans, activities,
academic articles, web resources and many
more.
3.) Teachers First
This is a rich collection of lessons, units, and
web resources designed to save teachers time
by delivering just what they need in a practical, user-friendly, and ad-free format.
4.) Edutopia
This is an excellent website that empowers
and connects teachers, administrators, and
parents with innovative solutions and resources to better education.
While all these websites are western in orientation and a lot of information might not contextually
apply to our curriculum, teachers nevertheless can find ideas on how to do their lesson plans, motivational strategies, classroom activities, portfolio assessments and instruction.
In fact, in a world that is becoming more and more globalized, these websites might just be the bridge
that could fill the gap for Filipino students to be truly called 21st century learners. DW
