Gilded Age Project

For this project, we will examine the conflict between democracy and
capitalism that arose in the late 19th century and continues to confront
our country today.
The year is 1890. Most of you are working to convince the government
that certain laws should either be passed or not. If you are assigned to
a person or group of people, you must prepare a presentation of no
more than 3 (three) minutes advocating for your position. In
addition to the presentation, you must hand in a 2-3 page essay
explaining your point of view. Both the presentation and the essay
must include a primary source that supports your argument. The
essay will be worth 100 points.
The rest of you will be representatives of the government. You will
listen to your classmates presentations and choose 5 laws that you
think should pass. You must write a 3-5 page essay explaining why you
made your decisions, incorporating at least 2 primary sources from the
presentations that support your decision.
The presentations will take place Thursday, January 15. Your paper
will be due the next time you have class. For those of you representing
the government, you must render your verdict the next time you have
class; your essay is due Monday, January 26. This will be your first
assignment of the second semester.
