Course Description:
This course is designed for those who want to equip themselves with business systems
analysis and design skills, which is a specific category of information systems dealing
with methodologies and procedures to analyze business needs in evaluation existing and
proposed systems. The course will examine the life cycle of an information system

from initial business problem through system development, implementation, and


maintenance. Students will follow the development of various systems through
the use of select business cases. This course will address issues important to
managers when considering the big picture of providing the right information to
the right person in the right format at the right time.
Student Learning Outcomes:
The overall objective of this course is to introduce the student to the basic
concepts and terminology utilized in systems analysis by covering the following
topics: managers and information, organizational issues, computer technology,
systems analysis and design, examples of information systems, and special
management concerns. The overall course outcomes involve giving the student
the concepts and skills needed to analyze and information systems.
This course will address three business college level outcomes which include
specialized business knowledge, managerial thinking skills, and communication.
In addition, this course will address the critical thinking competency.

Specific student learning outcomes:


1. Describe the major alternative methodologies used in developing information
systems and the considerations involved in choosing which methodology to use.
2. Produce appropriate systems documentation at each point in the analysis and
design of an information system, and to do so with clarity and completeness.
3. Analyze a business need for information and to develop an appropriate strategy to
solve the problem and provide the required information service.
4. Prepare and use various information gathering techniques for eliciting user
information requirements and system expectations.
5. Communicate effectively, in both written and oral form, and to be persuasive in
these presentations.

Teaching Methodology:
The teaching methodology used in this course will be a combination of lecture
and student participation. Outside material will be incorporated in the course to
further facilitate the text.
Course Guidelines:

3. All assignments are to be completed and handed in on time as indicated by the
attached schedule. No make-up or late acceptance on exams, labs, or the abstract
paper will be approved unless granted in advance by the professor.
Makeup exams will be given only in the case of an unforeseen, documented
emergency or for a significant reason approved in advance by the professor.

4. It is the responsibility of the student to attend classes regularly, and to complete


assignments prior to class.
5. Please turn off cell phones and any audible device during classes. Please do not hold
private conversations during class as it is distracting to both the instructor and to the
other students in the class.
