basins and plays, structural and stratigraphic case studies, onshore and offshore
examples, and also the application to shale-chalk plays.
Shale gas is becoming an increasingly important source of natural gas in the United
States over the past decade and is expected to grow further in the coming future. One
analyst expects shale gas to supply as much as half the natural gas production in North
America by 2020. This interest in shale gas has since spread quickly to the rest of the
world as countries seek to produce more shale gas to reduce their dependency on
foreign imported gas. This masterclass will provide a thorough understanding on the
evaluation of shale gas and oil reservoirs from various perspectives (geological,
geophysical, geochemical and petrophysical) and how to classify and estimate
unconventional gas reserves accurately and precisely. Delegates will learn to evaluate
the various black shales, as shale-gas & shale-oil targets, as well as predicting
locations of quality shale plays. The course will also present on successful
shale-gas/shale-oil plays in the US, Canada and other places in the world. A short
presentation on other unconventional gas and oil types (tight sandstone-gas, Bakken
Play) will also be included. Project exercises and case studies based from the trainers
past experience will also be covered extensively to allow delegates to gain

carbonate sedimentary and reservoir systems. The course is recommended for geoscience
professionals who intend to work with carbonate reservoirs, but have limited experience.
The course covers fundamentals in depositional, textural, and diagenetic aspects of
carbonate reservoirs, and the implications of each for reservoir properties. This course can
also serve as a foundation for analyses of core and log characterization, sequence and
seismic stratigraphy, reservoir modeling, and reservoir analyses of carbonate reservoirs.
DESIGNED FOR
The basis of exploration plays requires the knowledge on petroleum systems and the
sedimentary basin that it is in. This course covers the theory and practice of basin
analysis, wherein participants will learn to develop and optimize their evaluation
process in finding out how good enough a basin can generate oil or gas. Participants
will be able to learn basin analysis in the aspects of sedimentary fills and tectonics,
seismic and genetic sequence stratigraphy, and consequences of formation pressure
characteristics. They will learn about different information needed to construct a better
representation of the basin model. Furthermore, this course features the PetroMod
software demonstration for application of basin analysis to basin modeling.
Participants will learn aspects of petroleum systems modeling, and how to overcome
the uncertainties that influences the calculations of hydrocarbon volumes. This course
will include case studies from both conventional and unconventional petroleum
exploration cases. These examples will be featured from Central Asia, Europe, and
Africa. Quantitative exercises will also be provided to allow the participants to learn
from hands-on practical experience. By the end of the course, the attendants will be
capable of defining all the parameters for a working petroleum system.

The course is likely to be beneficial for exploration professionals involved in the basin
evaluation stage of petroleum exploration: Exploration Geologists; Geophysicists;
Geoscientists. Pre-requisite: To fully appreciate the course, attendees are advised to
have at least 2-5 years of experience in petroleum exploration with knowledge in basic
petroleum geology.
This program will provide explorationists with practical insights into the key workflow and
geological concepts in basin analysis will describe and evaluate working petroleum systems
and associated plays. This will be presented through extensive examples of successful plays
worldwide, various Southeast Asian basins, and with a special focus on the Malaysian region.
To fully provide a holistic understanding of the exploration business, the program will begin
with an industrial history of exploration and development in the region. It will then proceed to
the technical skills than can enhance basin analysis --- this includes coverage of analytic
parameters to petroleum accumulation, concepts of subsurface processes, sedimentary
basin characteristics and their link to recognition, and development of petroleum systems and
plays. This will be further illustrated with worldwide examples as well as Southeast Asian
Tertiary Basins. Furthermore, the main methods in play and prospect identification, basin
analysis, and evaluation will be explained in detail with geochemical and basin modeling
considerations. Lastly, attendees will also learn about risk and uncertainty management in
exploration play and prospect stages in order to estimate the potential success of an
exploration project. The program will be concluded with the linkage of basin analysis to the
development and production phases. This will be illustrated with field examples of key issues
experienced during these stages. Class exercises illustrating the important concepts include
actual basin ranking, subsurface mapping, seismic interpretation, and subsurface conditions
evaluation will be done across sessions. Attendees of this course will be able to better equip
their practical knowledge with the regions best practices in basin analysis and evaluation to
later on advance their skills in prospect appraisals.

distribution, geometry, and continuity of elements of reservoir, source, and seal. The aim of this
one-week course is to provide an overview of the principles of sequence stratigraphy, and to
demonstrate its application to exploration and production. The course will include providing
conceptual models, developing a workflow to examine core, log, and seismic data, and
reviewing how these data can be integrated in a sequence stratigraphic framework. Key
examples will illustrate how sequence stratigraphy can be used to subdivide a reservoir,
constrain reservoir models, and generate high-resolution, geologically constrained predictions
of reservoir systems, and exercises will emphasize and expand on these concepts. The course
will include discussion of concepts and applications, and practical hands-on examples, from
both carbonate and siliciclastic systems. This course is designed for delegates who seek to
understand and apply the principles of sequence stratigraphy to reservoir characterization or
prediction in exploration, development, and production settings. Attendees are expected to
have a working knowledge on basic petroleum geology. Basic knowledge of sedimentology and
sequence stratigraphy are preferred, but essentials will be covered in the class.

Maximizing production from wells while minimizing unnecessary water or gas are key
areas where production logging can be applied. A range of basic and advanced sensors
are available for well performance evaluation and to diagnose production problems.
Reasons for running cased hole logs for formation evaluation include contingency
logging in difficult formations, old well evaluation for bypassed hydrocarbons, contactmonitoring and residual saturation measurement for EOR project evaluation.
Cased hole logs are also applied to determining completion integrity and condition of
cement and casing as well as production issues.
Production log and cased hole sensors can also be used to evaluate casing and cement
quality as well as measure reservoir properties and completion efficiency through
transient and multi rate pressure measurement.
This course covers all these areas and provides a foundation for geoscientists and
engineers looking to plan logging programmers, evaluate completion efficiency and
reservoir properties.

Uncertainty is inherent in many aspects of the oil and gas sector, and major investments
are made in upstream and downstream areas in the presence of risk and uncertainties.
Decisions involving asset acquisitions, exploration, appraisal, drilling, field development, equipment purchases, fiscal negotiations, cost estimation, capital investment
planning and general business case analysis all require quantitative support.
This 4-day course teaches the techniques necessary to model risk and uncertainty in
practice. The focus is on Monte Carlo simulation, but we also cover related topics, such
as sensitivity, scenario, optimisation, and decision-tree analysis, their applications,
implementation and relationship to risk and uncertainty analysis. The simulation
models will be implemented using both Excel/VBA (macros), as well as the Excel add-in
@RISK(a free trial copy will be used); in this way, participants learn how to run
simulations within their existing Excel environments, whilst being exposed to the
additional benefits that the use of an add-in can bring (in terms of the speed and
transparency of building and using a wide set of models).
The course is extremely hands-on and focusses on the direct implementation of the
techniques. Dozens of models will be built from scratch across a range of applications,
and using a range of approaches

The course is designed for and will benefit Cost Engineers, Cost Estimators, Cost
Controllers, Project Managers, Project Engineers, Project Planners, Discipline
leads, Finance Managers & Executives and all who are involved in technical
projects, cost estimation, cost control and planning and contract review in their
organizations.
Cost engineering is the art of assigning value to that which has been or will be
engineered. One key objective of cost engineering is to arrive at accurate cost
estimates and schedules and to avoid cost overruns and schedule slips. Cost
engineering goes beyond preparing cost estimates and schedules by supporting
assessment and decision making. "The discipline of cost engineering can be
considered to encompass a wide range of cost-related aspects of engineering and
programme management, but in particular cost estimating, cost analysis/cost
assessment, design-to-cost, schedule analysis/planning and risk assessment."
The first day will provide basic understanding of definitions of cost estimations, cost
control and planning. The participants will be able to read cost engineering reports
and put in the perspective of the project. Second day, will provide knowledge to
prepare and evaluate estimates quicker and more accurately. This will immediately
have its effect on the control you have on the cost of your project. After Day Three,
you will be able to make your own factor estimates and validate factor estimates
prepared by others. At the end of this course, the trainer will give comprehensive
insight on how to identify major cost risks of engineering.
This course will help you keep the cost down for your engineering phases, but as a
result you can also prevent budget overruns. A number of cases will be presented
during the course to make it more practical and allow you to apply the principles you
have learned.

Although international trends show a decline in the overall total number of accidental
deaths and work place accidents, the associated financial costs, both direct and
indirect, continue to rise. Many oil and gas companies continue to have employee
accidents despite modern industry having the knowledge or know-how to prevent such
accidents. There is an obvious requirement that those professionals undertaking
enforcement or regulatory activities in a team must have competence to undertake
