Section A: Long Questions

Write down, with working steps, the solutions of the following questions.
No marks will be awarded for answers without appropriate working steps.
1.

(a)Given that the price of three pens and two copybooks is $16 and the price of two pens and four
copybooks is $24, find the price of one pen and the price of one copybook.

[4]

Let the price of one pen be p and the price of one copybook be c.
3p + 2c = 16
2p + 4c = 24

[1]

Multiply the first equation by 2 then subtract (solving by elimination).

6p + 4c = 32
2p + 4c = 24
4p

[1]

=8

p=2

[1]

2(2) + 4c = 24
4c = 20
c=5

[1]

Hence, the price of one pen is $2 and the price of one copybook is $5.
Penalize 0.5 for not having $ unit

(b)

Bob bought 13 pens and 7 copybooks. How much did he pay?

[1]

13p + 7c from part a. Allow follow-through.

2. An ice cream store sells two types of ice cream: strawberry and chocolate which cost $5 and $3.
On a cold day, the store sold 7 ice creams in total for $27.

A pair of simultaneous equations can be derived from the text above to solve for the number of
each type of the ice creams sold on the cold day.
One of the equations has been plotted on the graph above, where x and y represents the number
of strawberry and chocolate ice creams sold.
(a) On the graph above, plot and label, in the form of y = mx + c, the second equation.
[2]
If 5x+3y=27 seen, 0.5 mark.
1 mark for plot. 1 mark: y=-5x/3 +9
(b) By locating an appropriate point on the graph, state the number of each type of the ice
creams sold on the cold day.

3. 4. Given that the equation of the line L1 is y 2 x 4, which of the following lines are parallel to
L1? Justify your answers.

2 marks for identifying ii and iv as parallel to L1.

0.5 mark each for rearranging L1, ii, iii and iv to find the gradient.
Equation of L1 is y = 2x + 4
Gradient = 2
(a)

y = 2x + 4 gradient = 2, hence, not parallel to L1.

Bonus Questions
Write down, with working steps, the solutions of the following question.

No marks will be awarded for answers without appropriate working steps.

Omission of this section will NOT affect your final marks.

What can you say about the values of n that make 7 n + 3 n a multiple of 10?

[3]

Answer: odd [1]

with at least 3 examples of odd ns shown to be multiples of 10. [1]
Some logical reasoning of why it works [1]
List out another pair of integers between 1 and 10 which have similar properties. Show they have the
same properties.
[2]
Correct pair [1]
Shows it is divisible by 10 whenever n is odd [1]
Find all n that 3n+7n is divisible by 10. We notice that positive powers of 3 end in 3, 9, 7, 1
(i.e 31,32,33,34) and these digits repeat themselves.

Also the powers of 7 end in 7, 9, 3, 1 repectively.

Hence when the odd powers of 3 and 7 are added we get a zero as the last digit thus divisible by 10.
Hence when n is odd 3n+7n is divisible by 10.

Other pairs e.g. 1

+ 3 n, 1

+ 9 n, 3

+7
