Non-Technical Seminars
Labor Education for Graduating Students
By: DOLE, PESO and POEA

Seminar Description
The seminar aims to prepare the students in the world of work. The program will help
graduating students become familiar with DOLEs services on employment facilitation, workers
protection and social security coverage for the employees.

Reaction
The seminar conducted by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) was about
the life after graduation or the employment life. They discussed pre-employment tips or
preparation for employment like knowing employees duties and responsibilities before signing
the contract. They also discussed employer and workers rights. This includes right to be paid
minimum wage, and concerns regarding health and safety. After this, the SSS coverage and
health & safety and insurance are discussed. This section mainly discussed that the company
should be able to contribute to your SSS. They are responsible for keeping track of the
contributions whether they have paid or are going to pay the contribution. Anti-illegal
recruitment is also discussed. This focuses on OFWs or Overseas Filipino Workers. They
discussed that we should only transact with agencies that are accredited by the POEA or the
Philippine Overseas Employment Administration. Other agencies which transact outside of their
premises or office, which takes you out for lunch, may be suspected as an illegal agency and may
have created a modus for trapping aspiring persons into paying them high amount of money
and they leave them hanging. All in all I think it was a good seminar because it opens the
students mind in the real world a world where we all can become victims of scams and
underemployment.

Career Development Seminar

By: Coca Cola FEMSA Philippines

Seminar Description
The seminar discusses what the company does, some tips for career growth and common
interview questions and the right way to answer them. They also conducted a mock interview so
that the students may be able to get a vibe on how the interview progresses and critiques the
students so that they may be able to assess and correct the interview let downs to be able to ace
an interview.

Reaction
The Coca Cola FEMSA Philippines, formerly known as the Coca Cola Bottlers
Philippines and is based on Santa Rosa, Laguna, manufactures a complete beverage portfolio,
starting from soft drinks, bottled water, juices and energy drinks. Some outstanding brands
include Coca Cola, Coca Cola Light and Coca Cola Zero, Powerade, Real Leaf, Royal, Sprite,
Samurai, Viva and Wilkins. After a brief company introduction, they enumerated 10 skills that
are important for success. These include communication skills and interpersonal skills. They then
presented some common interview questions that is asked during the interview and they gave
tips on how to answer them. One question would be what your weakness is. This can become a
trick question and the key to answer this question properly is to turn a weakness into strength.
One probable answer to this is My weakness would be being a perfectionist. I tend to be
meticulous in every output I present because I am a perfectionist. This is because I strive for
excellence and I believe that every work should be in its excellent form. In the afternoon, they
conducted a mock interview so that we students should be able to experience an actual interview
and will know what to expect in an interview after graduation. I think this is a good experience
for us so that we are ready and will be able to at least know what to expect during an interview.

Technical Seminars
5G: Visualizing Maximized Technology
By: Verna Angela Burdos

Seminar Description
The seminar tackles information regarding the advancement of technology in terms of
telecommunications.

Reaction
The topic of the seminar is very interesting for use ECE students simply because this
concerns communication. Though one draw back for me would be the information gap between
the speaker and the listener. The speaker is a track or specialization professor in communications
track so she tends to be a bit techy in her seminar. She would mention such information that
means nothing to us who belong in different track but would mean a lot to those who belong to
communications track. I have to ask my friend who took communications track before I can
understand what she is trying to say. Although she is a good speaker she pretty much connects
with the audience by asking questions, I think she can improve her performance by trying to
speak in laymans term, so that even an undergraduate of a different program, perhaps a tourism
student, can be drawn to her seminar.
I have learned through her seminar that what we call LTE or Long Term Evolution is
really 3.9G and not 4G. I also learned that what we are given in terms of bandwidth is not even
close to what 4G has to offer. I also learned that there are evolutions in technology such as Li-Fi
or Light Fidelity.

Telecommunications The Way of Life

By: Engr. Nervin Meregildo

Seminar Description
The seminar conducted by Engr. Meregildo focuses on the idea of telecommunications. It
also includes the discussion of the three main components of telecommunications which are the
transmitter, channel and the receiver. The seminar also gave an information development of the
wireless network.

Reaction
I really liked the seminar. It is very informative for us ECE students because the seminar
concerns communications, telecommunications to be more specific. Mr. Meregildo discussed the
evolution of communication. From the Jurrasic Telephone, up to Apple iPhone and Samsung
Note. He also discussed the three main components of telecommunication, which are the
transmitter, channel or medium, and receiver. Without one of the components, the system will be
incomplete.
I liked the seminar because it is concise and brief but very informative and the seminar
flow is very interactive. He asks questions and cracks jokes to lighten up the mood when the
seminar gets too technical.

Measurement System Analysis

By: Engr. Raymund Concepcion

Seminar Description
This seminar is about the measurement system analysis. GRR or Gauge Repeatability and
Reproducibility is focused in this seminar.

Reaction
I really liked the seminar mainly because I can relate to it. Engineer Concepcion works in
a manufacturing company and I am an intern in a manufacturing company so I can relate to what
he is talking about. I belong in the calibration group of the company which means that I am in a
group which conducts GRRs. I learned from the seminar that GRR is conducted to confirm that
the measuring tool is accurate and precise. In our company, we conduct GRR in ten trials, each
with 3 measurements. This is done to confirm its repeatability. The tool is measured by two
individuals to confirm its reproducibility. If the GR&R is less than 30%, the system may be
accepted, but there should be some plan to review the system for improvement. A GR&R result
of greater than 30% shows that the system must be improved as the appraisers and equipment
contribute to more than 30% of the system variation.

By: John Algric Cu-Unjieng

Seminar Description
The seminar conducted by Engr. Cu-Unjieng focuses on the introduction and
development of ISDB-T in the Philippines and discusses how their company is a part of that big
transition.

Reaction
I am truly honored to have the pioneer of Digital Television be my professor in Broadcast
lecture. This is why this seminar is very interesting for me. Introduction of the company is first
held. They also mentioned that Village Island became partners with Mapua Institute of
Technology and they are setting up a laboratory in the campus a first in the Philippines.
They demonstrated how the flow works. They brought a Cisco router and broadcasted a
video file. He then explained how the video is broadcasted through the use of the server. It can
be accessed via the internet.

Waseda University started life as Tokyo Senmon Gakko (Tokyo College) on October 21,
1882. In the early years it was also commonly known as the Waseda Gakko (Waseda School)
or Totsuka Gakko (Totsuka School), after the location of founder Shigenobu Okumas villa in
the village of Waseda and the schools location in Totsuka Village.
Around 1892, the vernacular name Waseda Gakko became prevalent, and the institution
was formally renamed Waseda Daigaku (Waseda University) upon acquiring university
designation in 1902.

Reaction
Waseda University is not your average university. A handful of high profile and key
persons graduated from this university, one of which is former President Gloria Macapagal
Arroyo. Our facilitator for the campus tour is Ms. Ayaka Doyle and she is also a student of the
University.
The university campus is large and very beautiful. Different buildings are assigned to a
specific program. The technological advancement of Japan can be seen through their beautiful
structures. There is a building in the campus specifically designated to be an art museum. It is the
only museum in Japan dedicated to art. Inside the building you will see works of Tsubouchi
Shoyo, a famous Japanese writer, who translated all of Shakespeares work into Japanese.
There is also a building designated to be a library. So far, it is the biggest library I have
ever seen. The library goes two stories up and one story down. In the center of the library holds a
portrait. Ms. Doyle explained to us what the significance of the portrait is. It is a painting of a
road in a forest and you cannot see the end of the road. At the back of the forest you will see a
bright light, like the sun. The painting, as Ms. Doyle had explained, signifies that the struggle in
education cannot be avoided. It will be very long and painful and you will not know what lies
ahead, but after education comes enlightenment. You can achieve your dreams, after you have
endured it all. She also mentioned that whatever angle you look at the painting, it will always

P a g e | 37

look like the road is opened to you. This signifies that there are no age limit and gender barrier to
having an education.
All in all, I really like the university. Yes, it is costly to study there, because one year of
tuition fee in Mapua corresponds to only one month tuition fee in Waseda, but I think it is a very
good investment and opportunity to study there for people who can afford to spend that much
money for education.

history spanning more than 130 years. The Institute has 3 schools with 23 departments, 6
graduate schools with 45 departments, and many research institutes spread over its Ookayama,
Suzukakedai and Tamachi Campuses. Of the approximately 10,000 students, half of them are
undergraduates and the other half are graduate students. International students number 1,200.
There are 1,200 faculty and 600 administrative staff members. In the 21st century, the role of scitech universities has become increasingly important. Tokyo Tech continues to cultivate global
leaders in the fields of science and technology and contributes to the betterment of society
through its research focusing on solutions to global issues. The Institute's long-term goal is to
become the world's leading sci-tech university.

Reaction
In my opinion, Tokyo Institute of Technology is the advanced version of Mapua Institute
of Technology. They specialize in engineering courses that is why they have many laboratories
dedicated to improving our technology. They divided us into two groups which will rotate in the
two stations they prepared us for.
The first station our group visited was the Semiconductor making station. The facilitator
explained to us the process of imprinting the thin lines in semiconductor chips. The second
station is the communications station. The facilitator explained to us the creation and design of
waveguides and their corresponding generated signal.
I really enjoyed the tour and I recommend visiting this institute to the succeeding Japan
Graduating Class Fieldtrip.

Educational Tour - Company

SHARP Company Visit

Company Description
Sharp

Corporation is

a Japanese

multinational

corporation that

designs

and

manufactures electronic products. Headquartered in Abeno-ku, Osaka, Japan, Sharp employed

50,253 people worldwide as of March 2014. The company was founded in September 1912 and
takes its name from one of its founder's first inventions, the Ever-Sharp mechanical pencil,
which was invented by Tokuji Hayakawa ( ) in 1915. Sharp Corporation was
previously the fifth-largest television manufacturer in the world, after Samsung, LG, Sony,
and Panasonic.

Reaction
Tokuji Hayakawa is the founder of SHARP Company. His first invention was a snap
buckle. He then later invented a mechanical pencil that was sharp, which was where the name of
the company - SHARP, was derived from. With the company motto We make products that
other want to imitate, SHARP became one of the top companies selling diverse products such as
televisions and air conditioners.
They showed us some of their latest products such as the huge Television screen which is
touch screen and can save the screen writings on it. Pointed surface is recognized as a pen and a
flat surface is recognized as an eraser. They also showed us a railing of a balcony which is turned
into a solar panel. They plan to negotiate with companies so that these energy saving solar panels
can be put into good use by installing them in buildings. They also invented the Sharp
Plasmacluster air purifiers and ion generators which cleans the air of ions. They also showed us
posts and lighting systems using LED.
All in all, I am much honored to have been given the chance to be toured by SHARP in
their facility because I have learned so much in our brief tour.

NHK: Nippon Hoso Kyokai Company Visit

Company Description
NHK, Nippon Hoso Kyokai (Japan Broadcasting Corporation), is Japans only public
broadcaster. As a public broadcaster funded by fees received from TV viewers, NHK delivers a
wide range of impartial, high-quality programs, both at home and abroad.

Reaction
NHK is a broadcasting company in Japan, and they are the ones who develop
improvements for television viewing. The tour was quite spectacular. The first station we visited
was in the huge auditorium. They explained to us a bit of their company background and then
they let us watch sample clips which is in 8K of ultra high definition. 8K TV is very believable.
There is one clip of Sochi Olympics, and when the man kicked another mans face instead of the
ball, it seems like you really felt how the person felt because of its high definition. It seems life
like.
The second station we visited is the presentation of hybridcast. Hybridcast is the
integration of broadcast and internet. The concept is that instead of broadcasting using radio
frequencies, they will broadcast via the internet. Its like surfing the web, via your television.
The last station we visited is the creation of glassless 3D. I think it is very innovative to
invent glassless 3D because watching 3D films with 3D glasses can sometimes be annoying and
leads to headaches.
All in all I enjoyed the visit at NHK. I learned a lot in the advancement of television
technology and I hope that I get to experience 3D broadcast and 8K broadcast.

Village Island Company Visit

Company Description
Village Island is a Japanese company founded in 2005. It has 26 employees and 2 offices
located in Singapore & Tokyo. Village Island is a Japan and South-East Asia distributor and
integrator partner for several brands which includes DekTec, Sencore, Access, Tomo-digi,
Hitachi Kokusai, NEC, Toshiba, Digigram. They also participate as OEM supplier and OEM
business development, and software and system development.

Reaction
At first I thought Village Island is a resort or a theme park because of its name. I never
thought of it as a broadcasting company, which it is. After a brief introduction of their company,
I now know that Village Island came from the merger of two surnames in Japanese Village and
Island.
The team of Village Island divided us into three groups, each assigned to a station where
a demonstration of a project will be held. After the demonstration, the groups will rotate to the
next station until all groups have visited all three stations.
The first station I visited demonstrated how the village or information flow. The next
station I visited was Mr. James station. In his station, he demonstrated the difference (visually)
of 4K TV and HDTV. I learned that 4K TV consists of four (4) HDTV put together. That is how
distinct the details will get. The facilitator of the last station presented to us his ongoing project
which aims to let the owner of the video know whether his video has been pirated. Basically, he
created a website wherein you can sign up to (with fee) and upload your own video. The website
will search supported video websites such as YouTube and Daily Motion. The website will then
calculate the percentage of similarity and then it is up to the owner whether he will ask to put
down or remove the pirated video or hell ask for money for it.
All in all I enjoyed our visit at Village Island and I am thankful that Mr. Santiago helped
us in getting the company tour.

Graduation Plan

After graduation, I plan to study for the board exam. When I pass the board exam, I plan
to enter into either a manufacturing company or a broadcasting company. I really liked
manufacturing company because I believe I will get the best experience because they really train
you at manufacturing companies. If it would be possible, I would like to enter Asia Brewery or
Coca Cola Bottlers Philippines. If I was to enter a broadcasting company, I would love to enter
radio broadcasting. I am really interested in broadcasting because of our broadcasting laboratory
program in the ECE curriculum. When I get employed, I will save for a house and a car.
