Zagreb - Split MOTORWAY

CROATIA, Maslenica
MONITORED RETAINING WALL
Product: TerraMesh System (TMS)
Problem

FIG.1

Section Tunnel Sveti Rok - Maslenica on motorway Zagreb Split

in Croatia passes through difficult mountain terrain.
On this section, which is 15 km long, motorway descends from the
altitude of 510 m to 90 m. It contains 3 tunnels and 4 viaducts. The
terrain is very steep and on 3 locations the cuttings are up to 50 m at
one side of the road while the opposite side is on the embankment.
On two locations, where embankments should be built, the inclination
of the terrain was up to 32 (1:1.6) and it was not possible to built
embankments with usual inclination (1:1.5), which would ensure
slope stability for stone fill material.

Solution
In order to solve the problem of building embankments on a steep
ground base at these two segments of the route, it was decided to
build embankments with reinforcement.
The Maccaferri Terramesh System (TMS) was used for the construction (FIG. 1 and FIG.2 show the TMS during and after the construction).
The face of embankment is formed by gabions, which form blocks 6
m in height and have 2:1 face inclination. Blocks are divided from
each other by berms. Berms were predicted to reduce global inclination of the structure and to correct geometry during the construction.
The lengths of reinforcements, used in embankments were 5, 7 and 9
m.
The height of gabions is 0.5 m at lower part of the embankments and
1.0 m at upper part. That was the demand for reinforcement density
from stability analysis.
First embankment is 176 m long with maximum height of 29 m,
while the other one is 208 m long with maximum height of 30 m.

Measurements during and after the construction

Stability and deformation analysis were done using MacStars software and the GEOSLOPE programs: Slope/W and Sigma/W.
With these 3 software TMS reinforcement were designed.
Moreover, horizontal displacement were measured in the different
layers of TMS to evaluate the reliability of the two deformation programs. 21 measurements were performed on each embankment using
the method of Spectral Analysis Surface Waves (SASW).
Calculated and measured horizontal displacements are presented and
compared (FIG. 5). The amounts of calculated and measured values
showed a good match, except at lower part of structures, but the
shapes of displacements curves were quite different. (More details
about deformation measurements are available in the following paper: Calculated and measured horizontal deformation of high reinforced embankment, Z. Mihalinec et al).
