WELLNESS NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2015

DOH-Franklin STAFF WEAR RED FOR AMERICAN HEART

MONTH
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women.
Every year, about 600,000 people in the U.S. die from heart disease thats 1 out of every 4 deaths. To prevent heart disease and increase
awareness of its effects, the Florida Department of Health in
Franklin County is proudly participating in American Heart Month.

Heart disease refers to several types of heart conditions. The most

common type in the United States is coronary heart disease (also
called coronary artery disease), which occurs when a substance called
plague builds up in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Coronary heart disease can cause heart attack, angina, heart failure, and
arrhythmias. You can make healthy changes to lower your risk of developing heart disease. Controlling and preventing risk factors is also
important for people who already have heart disease. To lower your
risk: Watch your weight.

Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.

Control your cholesterol and monitor your blood pressure.

If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.

Exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet.

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables at least 5 servings each day. Limiting salt or sodium in your diet will also lower your blood pressure.
Eating foods low in saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol can help
prevent high cholesterol. For more information, visit CDC website:
