The relations of Metamorphosis with the Contemporary World

Becoming rich is a highly desirable goal in most peoples lives. The msin
purpose Is to posses valuable possessions so that on must be superior to rest
of the world. The standard of merits and demerits is based upon taunting
material persuits. Science is developing progess through out th world.
Reason and logic is growing to its height. Wonders of the science can be seen
all over the world. The mind and its magic and tricks have oncreasingly
grown up. on the contrary the feelings, emotions have suppressed under the
pressure of science in such a way that we are only the embodiment of
bones., our parts of body work together just like parts of the woring machine
in some factory.
This trend can be seen within the members of the family. The members
of the family individually associate their affections in accordance with their
physical significance. The affections amoung the members of the family are
found changed because of the ups and downs in physical benefits. Modern
man is just a working machine which is to be cared and kept as long as it is
of some use materialistically. If it fails to work properly it is going to be given
up as soon as possible. Things which are purposeless are not going to be
kept anymore.

One of the leading world problems which are being faced today is the
problem of connecting our affections with those aspects beneficial for us.
Materialistic persuits are our merits and demerits. Such type of interpretation
can be found from Franz Kafkas most worthwhile literary work
Metamorphosis. We find the true depiction of the modern world view in this
novella. He shows through his keen observation how relations, even of the
family members, transform with the transformation of the circumstances and
how changes occur among the members of the family. We observe how the

family members of Gregor are ready to get rid of him forever. Here it is useful
to be noted that Gregor, the main character of the story a travelling
salesman has been praised and considered significant and a backbone for all
the members of the family as long as he has been physically useful and
important for them. When he is transformed from a human being to a
gigantic insect, he loses all his physical appearance as he had previously.
Kafka here laments at the sad fact that human beings are too much lost
in the psyhical world and in this way they have lost the true spirit of life.
Even very close relations are going to be lost gradually under the sound
pressure as we see in metamorphosis. Not everyone in this world earns
money in an honest way. People use unjust ways to earn money and this
trend is unfortunately increasing in the world today. We are slaves before
artificiality.
In contemporary world one thing is obviously crystal clear that we have
indulged so much in this artificiality that we making even our children work
to get money. Morality, rules and regulations that are here to secure the
rights of mankind are not considered significant. We have set our standards
which are based on appearances and not on characters of human beings. We
try to make progress in the society and feel proud of being superior to
others. We start, having been succedded looking down upon others

who are lees progressive than us. It is no doubt very important to get money
to fulful our needs. We must achieve our goals that we have set in our lives
but we have no right to hurt others feelings by using our authority and
status.
From Kafkas worthwhile work we find how the people closely related
change with the change of circumstances. Formal affections are transformed
into repulsions later on. Gregor finds himself transformed one morning into a
gigantic insect. This statement from Kafkas metamorphosis indicates the
sudden realization of a mankind who has been working through out his
previous life and now things are about to go against him. Distranformation
enables him to get the real picture of his existence. After his transformation
he comes to know that he is not going to useful anymore to his family. He
fins all his relations changed from their casual attitudes. Gregors father after
his sons transformation starts hating that gigantic insect which seems to
him too dirty to be looked at. Mrs.Samsa feels sympathy at the very start but
she also remains back when he is appeared in front of them. Gregors mother

is between a conflict between her material impulse and love for her son. But
she chooses materialistic values over her son. Grette, his sister and closest
friend also shows repulsion atlast. Though in start she tries to persure her
father and mother to take care of him but at the end she persuade them that
they must get rid of him.
So Kafka wants to bring the fact that there is no significance of feelings
and emotions in out contemporary world. We give importance more to our
physical world then to human beings. We begin our day with the alarm of
clock instead of the first ray of the sun when it arises in the east. We never
try to hear the sweetest voice of the cock early in the morning. It reveals to
us that if we try to hear the soft and gentle voice of our conscious that we
has almost lost. The true spirt can be found there. We never find real
4 Ali
beauty that is beyond this physical world. We find ourselves in the
continuous struggle against nothing. It is nothing but a densing around the
fire and which is not the real solution to our problems.
Human beings are traditionally distinguished from animals by their
capacity for thought, language, social feeling. How do we categorize Gregor
Samsa who seems to exhibit all of these human capacities. Animals lack
consciousness that is why they lack sufferings of their existence so here I
have presented the modern world and its depiction for Kafkas work
Metamorphosis. I would like to add something from my side. Our life is just
like a flowers plant. If we keep on watering the plant it can produce many
flowers. These flowers can spread their fragrance throughout the world that
is consisted on only 30% of the whole universe that God has created. We
must take care of that plant which is the only source of the flowers blooming.
With the atomic bombs and progress of science in such a rapid way, we are
going to eradicate these plants of life. We must water them rather than
plucking them. This type of attempt which can safe our lives can be the
source of true happiness. I think that the power of saving others lives is
always stronger than the power of destructing.
