NEW FACES: The Jets, playoffs participants in three-of-the-last four seasons
under Executive Vice President & GM Terry Bradway and Head Coach Herm
Edwards’ direction, continue to infuse the team with new faces. In total, 45 of
the players on the Jets’ roster, not including injured reserve, have been brought
in since Bradway and Edwards took over the reigns of the organization. The Jets
brought in 20 new faces in 2004 and 18 new players this season.
MARTIN THE WORKHORSE: RB Curtis Martin embodies Head Coach Herm
Edwards’ mantra that the Jets are a blue-collar team. Martin, from the mean
streets of Pittsburgh, could enjoy true superstar treatment should he ever opt for
it. Yet, the RB, in his 11th season and the fourth all-time leading rusher in NFL
history, has been the mainstay of the Jets’ offense this season, with 82 carries
for 226 yards on the ground and 10 receptions for 45 yards. Martin has
averaged a franchise-record 85.6 yards per game rushing since 1998 with the
Jets, his first season in Gotham.

HOBSON MANS’ STRONG-SIDE: Third-year LB Victor Hobson, the Jets’

second round draft pick in 2003, has been a defensive stalwart for the Jets this
season. The 6-0, 252-pound native of Mt. Laurel, NJ nearly scored his first
career TD on Sunday at Baltimore when he scooped up a Jamal Lewis that had
been forced by starting CB David Barrett’s well-timed hit. Hobson grabbed the
loose ball and rumbled 43-yards to the Baltimore one before TE Todd Heap’s
desperation tackle ended Hobson’s bid for the score. Hobson finished third on
the team in tackles with 10 stops on Sunday and now has 21 tackles this season
along with one pressure and the fumble recovery. For his career, Hobson has
played in 32 regular season games, making 16 starts, and has 125 tackles, two
sacks, two interceptions for 28 yards, three passes defensed, a forced and
recovered fumble.
NEW YORK JETS AT BALTIMORE RAVENS NOTES
October 2, 2005
M & T Bank Stadium, Baltimore, MD
Inactives: #3 QB Kliff Kingsbury (3rd QB), #9 QB Jay Fiedler, #10 QB Chad
Pennington, #35 B.J. Askew, #50 Eric Barton, #76 Steve Morley, #97 Trevor
Johnson.
Captains: #28 Curtis Martin, #52 Kenyatta Wright, and #92 Shaun Ellis.
Lineup Changes: LB Mark Brown started in place of the injured Eric Barton at
JACK, while Adrian Jones moved to LT and Jason Fabini moved to RT.
Vilma Shall Lead Them: For the third straight game MLB Jonathan Vilma, with
15 tackles on Sunday at Baltimore, led the Jets in tackles. The second-year
2005 first round draft choice, 12th overall from “The U” has racked up 52 tackles
through four games this season. Vilma spearheaded a defensive unit that
allowed only 259 yards of total offense to the Ravens and limited them to 2.6
yards per rushing play.
Abe’s Impact: WE/LB John Abraham had his streak of three consecutive
games with a sack snapped on Sunday, yet the former South Carolina
Gamecock was all over the field, harassing Ravens’ running backs and putting
pressure numerous times on QB Anthony Wright. Abraham, who has seen
double-team blocks all season, still manages to elude blockers and make plays
all over the field. He was credited with five tackles at Baltimore.
Bollinger Makes First Career Start: Third-year quarterback Brooks Bollinger
made his first career start. Bollinger finished the game completing 14-of-28
passes for 149 yards with zero interceptions and touchdowns for a passer rating
of 65.9 against one of the most aggressive and opportune defenses in the
league. Bollinger got the starting nod due to shoulder injuries to both Chad
Pennington and Jay Fiedler.
Martin-Blaylock Open Game in Backfield: Running Backs Curtis Martin and
Derrick Blaylock started the game in the same backfield.

Ravens Take 3-0 Lead: The Ravens’ Matt Stover connected on a 42-yard field
goal with 6:31 remaining in the first quarter, ending a 10-play, 32-yard drive in
4:50 in time of possession.
Baltimore Extends Lead with Second Field Goal: Stover hit a 25-yard field
goal with 3:47 left in the second quarter, ending a nine-play, 65 yard drive in
5:33. The field goal gave the Ravens a 6-0 lead.
Barrett FF & Hobson FR: CB David Barrett stripped Jamal Lewis following a
one-yard run, strong-side LB Victor Hobson alertly scooped up the ball and
returned it 43-yards to the Baltimore 1. The Jets, however, lost two-yards on the
drive and settled for a Mike Nugent 21-yard field goal, cutting the Ravens’ lead to
6-3. It was Barrett’s second forced fumble in as many weeks, having stripped
Jacksonville wide receiver Reggie Williams of the ball last week and the forced
fumble this week. It also marked the third turnover caused by Barrett in the last
three games, as he intercepted a Gus Frerotte in the Jets’ game two win against
the Miami Dolphins.
Ravens Up Lead; Register Final Points of the Game: The Ravens extended
their lead to 13-3 with a Jamal Lewis one-yard TD run with 3:12 left in the third
quarter, ending a 12-play, 71 yard drive in 8:05.
Coleman Interception Rounds Out Secondary Sweep: FS Erik Coleman
intercepted an Anthony Wright deep pass in the Jets’ end zone intended for WR
Clarence Moore in the fourth quarter. Despite playing with a surgically repaired
broken thumb, Coleman positioned himself perfectly on the pass. In doing so, he
joined fellow starting secondary members Ty Law, David Barrett and Kerry
Rhodes with an interception thus far this season. Last season Coleman had a
team-high four interceptions.
Brown Steps In: Third-year linebacker Mark Brown stepped in and replaced an
injured Eric Barton at the jack linebacker spot and responded with 12 tackles,
the second most on the team. The former rookie free agent from Auburn has
played every linebacking spot for the Jets the last three seasons, having stepped
in and replaced an injured Victor Hobson for six games last season. Brown’s 12
tackles on Sunday were a career-high, and matched his tackle output from the
entire 2004 season.
DID YOU KNOW? The last time Curtis Martin lost a fumble to the opposing
team was on November 2, 2003 vs. the Giants in the second quarter. Martin has
touched the ball 724 times (652 rushes and 72 receptions) since his last lost
fumble that was recovered by an opponent during the regular season. In game
two, Martin was stopped on a fourth-and-goal in the second quarter against
Miami. On the play, Martin fumbled and the ball was recovered in the end zone
by Jerald Sowell. However, it was not ruled a touchdown as the only person who
could recover the ball for the Jets would have been Martin. Thus, he was credited
with one rush for zero yards and the Jets turned the ball over on downs, thus in a
twist, Martin was not officially credited with a fumble, keeping his streak intact.

HEAD OF HIS CLASS: Herm Edwards was one of six coaches to be named a
head coach prior to the start of the 2001 season. Of the six head coaches, only
two are with the team that hired them, Edwards and Kansas City’s Dick Vermeil.
Besides the aforementioned two, the only other coach that is currently a head
coach is Marty Schottenheimer, who was hired by the Washington Redskins in
2001 and then had his contract terminated at the conclusion of the season. He
subsequently was named as the head coach of the San Diego Chargers before
the 2002 season.
Edwards is tied with his former Head Coach Dick Vermeil for the most wins (36),
and owns the second highest-winning percentage (.532), is the only one of the
six coaches to have guided his team to multiple playoff appearances (three) and
is joined by his former head coach, Vermeil, as the only two coaches to have
garnered a division title.

uncharacteristic fashion, having committed eight penalties for 80 yards. Yet, in
week two, they bounced back and only committed five infractions for 40 yards,
much more along the lines of a team under the direction of Herm Edwards. In
the week three OT loss to Jacksonville, the Jets committed six fouls for 44 yards.
Under Edwards, the Jets are the least penalized team in the NFL since 2001.
Against Baltimore in week four, the Jets committed five infractions for 39 yards.
TAKING CARE OF THE BALL: Under Head Coach Herm Edwards, the New
York Jets have been the best team, bar none, of any NFL team in terms of
turning the football over the fewest times. Under Edwards, the Jets have only
turned the ball over 79 times in the 67 regular season games he has directed the
Green and White (an average of 1.18 times per game). The 2 turnovers are the
fewest, by a margin of 15 turnovers over the Eagles.
CANTON BOUND - - - MARTIN’S ‘HUMBLE’ PURSUIT: Running back Curtis
Martin, it certainly seems, is heading, eventually to the Hall of Fame in Canton,
Ohio. But the modest Martin would certainly never engage in such a topic and
would quickly quell the story. This coming from a man whose least favorite topic
to speak about would be any of his thousands of accomplishments on and off the
football field. What separates Martin from many of the modern day athletes? “I
have heard and firmly believe the saying, ‘To whom much is given, much is
expected. I am humbled by the contract that Mr. Johnson, Terry Bradway and

Coach Edwards have seen fit to award me,’ Martin said after signing a contract
extension prior to the start of the 2002 season.
BOLLINGER TAKES OVER: Third-year quarterback Brooks Bollinger took over
the reigns of the Jets’ offense for game four at Baltimore after both Chad
Pennington and Jay Fiedler suffered shoulder injuries against the Jacksonville
Jaguars on September 26. Bollinger, the son of former University of North
Dakota offensive coordinator Robert Bollinger, the current associate athletic
director at the school, was a four-year starter at Wisconsin, where he compiled a
30-12 record and led the school to a Rose Bowl win in 1999. The 2003 sixth-
round draft choice (200th overall) of the Jets entered the game having only played
in one previous NFL contest, at Jets’ win at Arizona on November 28, 2004,
when he replaced a woozy Quincy Carter and went five-of-nine passing for 60
yards.

Herm Edwards
Head Coach
Fifth Season with Jets
26th Season in NFL
Fifth Season as Head Coach in NFL
Edwards was named the Jets' 13th full-time head coach on January 18, 2001.
Edwards’ leadership style is a unique combination of honesty, innovation,
motivation and trust. He applies a wealth of knowledge gleaned from years of
playing the game at the highest level, combined with having learned the
intricacies of the game from some of the most astute people in the National
Football League, such as Kansas City’s Dick Vermeil and Indianapolis’ Tony
Dungy. He also has worked alongside and for some of the most respected
minds in the annals of football, including Carl Peterson, Mike White, Marion
Campbell, Marty Schottenheimer, Bill Cowher, Dan Henning, Ernie Zampese,
Lovie Smith and John Fox, among others. Additionally, Edwards was teammates
with some of the top players in the NFL in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s,
including Ron Jaworski, Bill Bergey, Harold Carmichael, Wilbert Montgomery and
John Bunting.
Relying on a respect-based managing style, keen preparation and a belief in his
players and coaching staff, Edwards has consistently managed a diverse roster
featuring solid, experienced and youthful players into believing in a common goal

of reaching the post-season. Edwards has shown a willingness to rely on young

players, often thrusting them into pivotal and critical roles, not shying away from
the fact that their experience may hinder their playing abilities, and instead
trusting in the players and standing by them.
Following his rookie season as head coach and once again after the difficult
2003 season, Edwards was rewarded by Jets’ Chairman & CEO Woody
Johnson, President Jay Cross and General Manager Terry Bradway with a
contract extension, thus extending his contract through the 2007 season.
CAREER WITH JETS
New York Jets Head Coach Herm Edwards, who is now in his fifth season
leading the Green and White, has swiftly stamped an indelible and impressive
mark in the history of Jets’ football. As the head coach of the Jets, Edwards has
guided the Club to a 36-32 record in the regular season and a 2-3 mark in the
postseason, including two AFC Divisional Playoff appearances (2002 & 2004).

Edwards’ 36 regular season victories are the fourth-most wins by a head coach

EDWARDS PAVES THE WAY: Edwards, with the Jets’ playoff appearance
in the 2004 season, has accomplished the following feats:
• Became the first head coach in team annals to guide the team to the
playoffs in his first season coaching the team (2001).
• The first coach in team history to take the team to the playoffs in
consecutive seasons (2001-02) to begin a tenure with the Club.
• The first coach in team history to lead the team to the playoffs in three-
of-four seasons.
• The first coach in team history to advance the team to the second
round of the playoffs in two-out-of-three seasons (2002 & 2004).
• The first coach to lead the Jets to three different playoff appearances
(2001, 2002 & 2004).

Hall of Fame, (71, 1963-73), Joe Walton (53, 1983-89) and Walt Michaels (39,
1977-82). The Jets’ thrilling 20-17 overtime victory at San Diego on January 8,
2005, marked the first postseason win on the road for the Jets since January 15,
1983, when the Jets defeated the Los Angeles Raiders in the venerable L.A.
Coliseum, 17-14. Edwards earned his first division title with the Jets in 2002,
helping to rally the team from a 2-5 start to the AFC East crown in the ultra-
competitive division. The AFC East title marked the Club’s second division title
since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 and the Jets’ back-to-back playoff
appearances were the first for the organization since the 1985-86 seasons.

Edwards, who ranks amongst the NFL’s bright, young, innovative head coaches,
began his head coaching career by posting a 10-6 record in 2001 and earning an
AFC Wild Card berth at Oakland. The following season (2002) Edwards brought
the Jets back from a 2-5 start and ignited the team by inserting promising young
signal-caller Chad Pennington, a quarter of the way through the season. Gunning
the Jets’ engines through the stretch run and capturing the division with a 9-7
mark, the Jets showed their battled-tested resolve with a 41-0 AFC Wild Card
victory over the Indianapolis Colts at The Meadowlands, the Jets’ first ever
postseason shutout. In 2003, Edwards and the Jets were unable to overcome a
preseason hand injury to Pennington that sidelined the energetic QB for nearly
the first half of the season and the Jets fell to 6-10, Edwards’ only losing season
in his head coaching tenure. Displaying the resiliency and resolve that Edwards
has had throughout his life, the Jets stormed back in 2004 with a 10-6 mark, an
AFC Wild Card win at San Diego in the playoffs before falling in a heart-
wrenching overtime game against the AFC’s top-seeded Pittsburgh Steelers, 20-
17, in an AFC Divisional Playoff tilt on the road.
2005 SEASON
The Jets got off to a shaky start, playing uncharacteristically on opening day at
Kansas City, with penalties and turnovers and lost 27-7. Edwards, however,
stayed firmly behind his team and stressed the importance of getting back to the
“blue-collar principles” that he has built the team around and the Jets responded
by winning their first division game of the season and their home opener, 17-7
against the Miami Dolphins. The Jets then dropped a gut-wrenching 26-20
overtime game to the Jacksonville Jaguars as the team lost the services of
several key performers for portions of the game, including Chad Pennington, Jay
Fiedler, Jason Fabini and Eric Barton to assorted injuries. The Club, down two
quarterbacks (Pennington & Fiedler) for an undisclosed amount of time, turned to
third-year former sixth round draft choice Brooks Bollinger for game four at
Baltimore. The Jets dropped a low scoring affair, 13-3, in game four at Baltimore
in week four.
2004 SEASON (JETS)
Edwards piloted the Jets to a 10-6 start, becoming just the third head coach in
franchise history to lead his team to double-digit wins in different seasons with
the Jets. Immediately after the 2003 season, Edwards pointed to the Jets’
penchant for breaking slowly out of the gate

finest coaches in the NFL in adverse situations, helped the Jets rally from a two-
game slide and the loss of Chad Pennington in early November with two big road
wins in a row, thus closing out the month of November 3-2. The team was 2-2 in
the month of December and posted an impressive 6-2 home record in 2004.
Edwards’ team maintained its highly-disciplined style of play, combining a
pounding rushing game, featuring the NFL’s leading rusher in ’04 in Curtis Martin
(1,697), and a passing attack that was without starting QB Chad Pennington for
three games through the middle portion of the season.
The Jets’ defense showed a marked improvement from the previous season, and
surrendered an average of only 16.3 ppg, the third-lowest average of points
allowed in the team’s 45-year history, bested only by the mark in 1993 (15.4) and
1985 (15.9). The Jets’ defense limited opposing offenses to a 38.0 percent
conversion success on third downs and surrendered more than 20 points in a
game only five times throughout the season (weeks one, two, 10, 16 and 17).
2003 SEASON (JETS)
The Jets’ 2003 season got off to a rocky start in the third preseason contest
against the New York Giants when QB Chad Pennington suffered a fractured
hand that required immediate surgery and shelved him for nearly half of the
season. The Jets fell into a hole and finished with a 6-10 record. Edwards,
though, responded by keeping the Jets competitive through the entire season,
with key wins at Oakland in overtime (11/2/03), a thrilling comeback win over the
Jaguars (11/23/03) and an emotional Monday Night home game against the
Tennessee Titans, 24-17, as well as a win against the Pittsburgh Steelers, 6-0, in
a driving snowstorm (12/14/03) at The Meadowlands, the Jets’ first win against
the Steelers since 1988. Edwards, following the season, vowed that he would
increase measures to insure the team got off to a quicker start the following
season and also took measures to improve the Jets’ defensive style and brought
in aggressive first-year defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson from the
Baltimore Ravens.
2002 SEASON (JETS)
Edwards was one of just two AFC coaches to take his Club to back-to-back
playoff appearances in 2001 and 2002, joining Pittsburgh’s Bill Cowher (the
Oakland Raiders also accomplished the feat, in 2001 under Jon Gruden and in
2002 under Bill Callahan). As the head coach, Edwards guided the Jets to the
best regular-season road record in his first two seasons (11-5).
The always quotable and insightful Edwards and his now-famous mantra, “You
Play to Win The Game,” was one of the most lasting memories of the 2002 NFL
season and became the Jets’ rallying cry for their remarkable second half of the
season comeback, turning a tumultuous 2-5 start into a stretch where the Jets
captured seven of their last nine games, earning the division title.
The Jets’ 2002 AFC East title was a product of the team winning eight of the last
10 regular season games, seven of the last nine, three of the last four and four in
a row at home. In addition, the Jets’ 41-0 playoff win over the Indianapolis Colts

NEW YORK JETS VS. BUCCANEERS 10.9.05

in the postseason was the first playoff shutout in Club history and marked the
second most points scored in a shutout win in NFL annals, while the 41 points
scored were the second-most in team history in a playoff game.
2001 SEASON (JETS)
In Edwards’ first season with the Jets (2001) he oversaw the implementation of
new offensive, defensive and special teams philosophies. Edwards kept a
forceful hand on the controls and guided the Jets to their first playoff appearance
since 1998. Edwards was the only coach out of six newcomers in their first year
with their respective teams in 2001 to earn a playoff spot. Besides his 10-win
season, perhaps the most indicative statistic supporting the effectiveness and
diligence of Edwards’ coaching style was the discipline the team displayed,
garnering an NFL-low 63 penalties for a league-low 507 yards.
The Jets set a franchise mark for most road wins in a season, 7-1, which topped
their 5-2 record in 1968. Additionally, the Green and White’s 7-1 road record tied
them with Philadelphia for the second-most wins in 2001 (STL, 8-0).
Edwards’ 2001 Jets led the NFL in turnover differential with a +18, a margin of
one over their closest rival, Edwards’ former club, Tampa Bay, who finished with
a +17 ratio. The Jets produced the second-most take-aways (39) in the AFC and
tied with the Bucs for second most in the NFL behind Cleveland’s 42. The Jets
also proved to be frugal in turning the ball over, relinquishing it just 21 times all
season, tied for the fewest in the AFC with Seattle and Pittsburgh and trailed only
San Francisco’s 19 in the NFL.
Edwards received numerous accolades throughout his rookie coaching campaign
for his willingness and cooperation with the media. He was awarded the Staples
NFL Coach of the Week Award following the Jets’ 21-17 comeback win over the
Miami Dolphins on October 14, 2001.
TAMPA BAY (1996-2000)
The former NFL standout defensive back earned the reputation as an excellent
communicator and one of the best teachers during his time spent as assistant
head coach/defensive backfield coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1996-
2000). At Tampa, he worked closely with current Indianapolis Colts and former
Bucs’ head coach Tony Dungy in the day-to-day administrative dealings
associated with the head coach’s role.
While with the Bucs, Edwards helped the secondary become one of the NFL's
consistently top-ranked units. In 2000, CB Donnie Abraham (team-high 7 INT)
and FS John Lynch (3 INT) each earned Pro Bowl recognition. Collectively, the
group recorded 25 interceptions, which tied for first in the NFC and third in the
NFL while the Bucs' 41 take-aways tied for second in the NFC and fourth in the
NFL. The Bucs’ defense also finished +17 in the plus/minus category, tops in the
NFC and tied for third best in the NFL. The Bucs’ defense finished fourth in the
NFC in total defense, allowing 300.0 yards per game (ninth in NFL). Under his
tutelage the Bucs finished in the top 10 in pass defense in four-of-the-five

NEW YORK JETS VS. BUCCANEERS 10.9.05

seasons. Edwards had a major hand in overseeing the NFL's second-ranked

pass defenses in both 1998 and 1999.
Under Edwards’ mentoring, Lynch earned three Pro Bowl berths (2000, 1999 and
1998) and Abraham earned one (2000), marking the first Pro Bowl appearances
by a member of the Tampa Bay defensive backfield since Wayne Haddix in
1990. In 1999, Edwards' troops turned in a stellar effort in the playoffs, holding
the second-ranked Washington Redskins’ passing attack to a mere 121 passing
yards and the top-ranked St. Louis offense to just 258 yards through the air. His
1998 group, despite battling through a rash of injuries and the integration of
young players, managed to surrender an average of just 172.6 yards per game,
the Club's best single-season showing since 1982.
In 1997, the Bucs’ secondary completed its second consecutive stellar
performance under Edwards, finishing in the top 10 in pass defense. In his first
season with Tampa Bay (1996), Edwards led the group to a fourth-place ranking
in pass defense by limiting opponents to just 182.8 passing yards per game.
KANSAS CITY (1990-95)
Edwards joined the Buccaneers after working the previous six years (1990-95) in
several different capacities with the Kansas City Chiefs. In 1995, he worked as a
scout in the pro personnel department and from 1992-94 he served as the
Chiefs’ defensive backs coach. He was credited with the development of CB
Dale Carter, the AFC's Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1992 and S Charles
Mincy, while also coaching Pro Bowlers S Kevin Ross and CB Albert Lewis. In
each of his three seasons as the Chiefs' defensive backfield coach, KC ranked in
the NFL's top three in take-aways and in the top 10 in pass defense. The 1992
season saw the Chiefs lead the AFC, and finish second in the NFL, in pass
defense, surrendering a mere 158.6 yards per game.
In 1990-91, Edwards was a talent scout for the Chiefs while also serving as an
assistant to Tony Dungy, then the Chiefs’ defensive backs coach. It was also at
that time Edwards had the opportunity to closely work with Jets' General
Manager Terry Bradway, who was then working in the personnel department of
the Chiefs. Edwards initially worked for the Chiefs in the summer of 1989 as the
recipient of the team's Minority Coaching Fellowship.
SAN DIEGO STATE (1987-89)
Edwards began his coaching career at San Jose State as the defensive backs
coach from 1987-89. During each of his three seasons at SJSU, the Spartans'
opponents completed less than 50 percent of their passes.
PLAYING YEARS (1977-86)
As a player, Edwards played 10 seasons in the NFL, including nine with the
Philadelphia Eagles (1977-85), after signing as a rookie free agent following his
collegiate career. He was signed as a rookie by current Chiefs’ President and
General Manager Carl Peterson, who at the time was the Eagles' director of
player personnel. He went on to earn a starting cornerback position in his first

NEW YORK JETS VS. BUCCANEERS 10.9.05

preseason game and proceeded to start the next 135 regular season games
during his Eagle career. His career was highlighted by second team All-NFC
honors in 1980 and 1982 and an appearance in Super Bowl XV, a 27-10 Raiders
win over the Eagles. He departed Philadelphia with 33 career interceptions,
which currently ranks third in the Eagles’ record books. In addition, he recorded
five postseason interceptions, and when combined with his regular-season
interception total, his 38 interceptions stand as a team-record.
Edwards gained fame for one of the most memorable plays in Meadowlands
history when he recovered a fumble by NY Giants’ QB Joe Pisarcik and returned
it 26 yards for a touchdown with 31 seconds remaining in Philadelphia's 19-17
"Miracle in the Meadowlands" win on November 19, 1978.
In his final NFL season as a player, Edwards' played in four games for the Los
Angeles Rams and three for the Atlanta Falcons, before announcing his
retirement during the season on November 11, 1986.
COLLEGE (1972-76)
Edwards began his college career at the University of California-Berkeley and
played there in 1972 and 1974. He earned Pac-8 (now Pac-10) honors and set a
Golden Bears’ record with four interceptions in one game. He played the 1973
season at Monterey Peninsula Junior College and his senior season at San
Diego State.
PERSONAL
Earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from San Diego State.
Herm Edwards is a strong proponent of being a positive role model and is one of
the organization’s most active participants in off-the-field outreach programs.
Together with his wife, Lia, they work closely with the American Diabetes
Association chapter in New York City. In 2004, Edwards launched the inaugural
Herm Edwards Golf Classic at the prestigious Piping Rock Country Club on the
north shore of Long Island, which now has raised more than $450,000 for the
Generation Jets Academy.
In 2003, Edwards was named a charter member of the Fritz Pollard Alliance,
which serves as a conduit between NFL minority coaches and executives in an
effort to ensure minorities receive equal consideration for all League job
openings. Edwards also was named to the Positive Coaching Alliance’s National
Advisory Committee in the spring of 2003. Edwards has helped spread the
organization’s message to preserve the “purity of the game of football” and to
coach in a positive manner. Edwards is joined on the advisory committee with
former Los Angeles Lakers head coach Phil Jackson and current Detroit Pistons
head coach Larry Brown. He also was recognized by the One Hundred Black
Men, Inc. and The Association For A Better New York in 2003 for his outstanding
contributions to society.
In 2002, he served as a national spokesperson for the National Sportsmanship
Day, an event promoted through the Institute for International Sport, which

serves as a forum for students, teachers, coaches, parents and fans to discuss
pertinent issues of ethics, fair play and sportsmanship. He also was named the
Big Brother of the Year by the Catholic Big Brothers for Boys and Girls in June
2002 at its annual awards dinner at the Marriott Marquis in New York City. He
and his wife were also guests of President George W. Bush at the White House
celebrating Martin Luther King’s birthday and was part of a national campaign
that encouraged all United States citizens to work on improving the country
through volunteering on the national holiday in 2002.
Edwards hosted a youth football clinic for 250 children in New York City’s Central
Park in June of 2002 and 2003 in conjunction with a Coaches Clinic for 300 area
football coaches at Fordham University. In addition, Edwards has been named
the recipient of the Staples NFL Coach of the Week honor four times (once each
in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004), every year he has been an NFL head coach.
Additionally, Edwards was named the recipient of the New York Sports Award as
the area’s Coach of the Year in 2002.
A frequent motivational speaker at area schools, Edwards exudes the power of
positive thinking, teamwork, family values, and religion in his speeches. Edwards
has also served as a featured speaker at his alma mater, San Diego State, at
their annual Coach’s Clinic for high school and college coaches.
He is also a proponent of the New York Jets Women’s Organization, founded by
his wife, Lia, which supports the INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), the Nassau
County Coalition of Domestic Violence, MercyFirst, Breast Cancer Research
Foundation, Diabetes Research Institute and The Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society.
While with Tampa Bay, Edwards and the Buccaneers' secondary implemented a
youth enrichment program called "Focus and Finish," in which they encouraged
high school athletes to excel in academics, athletics and as citizens in their
communities through volunteering, tutoring and mentoring. They were rewarded
for their work with tickets to a game.
Edwards has hosted the Herman Edwards Football Camp for underprivileged
children on the Monterey Peninsula for the past 10 years and also has hosted the
Annual Herman Edwards Charity Golf Classic, which benefits the Boys and Girls
Club in Seaside, CA. He graduated from Monterey High School.
Herman Edwards was born in Monmouth, N.J. on April 27, 1954, and was raised
in Seaside, CA. Edwards and his wife, Lia, are the parents of a son, Marcus, 22,
who is a scholar-athlete in his senior year at San Diego State University and a
newborn daughter, Gabrielle, who was born on August 10, 2005.

FEATURED COMMUNITY PROGRAM

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS DAY

Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) University Hospital, the Greater New York City
Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (Komen Greater
NYC), Davis Vision and the Jets Women’s Organization (JWO) present Jets’
Breast Cancer Awareness Day on October 9, 2005, at The Meadowlands. The
event’s goal is to create public awareness and education on the issue of breast
cancer and to promote the early detection steps for disease prevention.
Prior to the New York Jets’ kickoff at 1:00 p.m. against the Tampa Bay
Buccaneers, JWO members and Komen Greater NYC volunteers will distribute
25,000 pink bracelets at the stadium gates and collect donations upon entry into
the game. In addition, the New York Jets will donate five dollars to Komen
Greater NYC for every pink hat bought during the 2005 season online at
http://shop.newyorkjets.com or at the stadium. JWO founder Lia Edwards,
Komen Greater NYC Communications Director, Adrienne Scordato, and Breast
Cancer Program Leader in the Women’s Imaging Center at RWJ University
Hospital, Margie McDonald, will serve as honorary captains for the opening coin
toss.
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 to
eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research,
education, screening and treatment. Komen is a global leader and the largest
private source of funding in the fight against breast cancer. The Greater New
York City Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was formed
in 1990 and serves the five boroughs of NYC (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan,
Queens and Staten Island), Long Island, Rockland and Westchester counties.
