Disassemble Torque Proportioning Differential

1. Fasten a hoist and remove the differential from the carrier. The weight of the
differential is:
920-65 lb. (29 kg)930-95 lb. (43 kg)
2. Remove the lockwire and bolts (2) from each end of the differential to remove covers
(3). Remove bearings (1) from the covers only when replacement parts are needed.

3. Remove discs (4) and springs (5) from each end of the differential case. Make a note
of the position of the springs for assembly purposes.

4. Remove gears (6) from each end of the differential case.

5. Remove rings (7) from each end of the differential case.

6. Remove pins (8) from the differential case.

7. Use a 1/4"-20 NC forged eyebolt to remove the twelve shafts (9).

8. Remove the twelve pinion gears and eight wear plates (for the center pinion gears)
from the differential case.

Assemble Torque Proportioning Differential

NOTE: There are eight drive pinions (1) with the same part number. There are four
idler pinions with the same part number.

NOTICE
Install the pinions so the end of the pinions that have the identification
mark is toward the inside of the differential case.

1. Install four idler pinions (2) in the center of case (3). Install wear plates (4) in the
case. Install the four shafts (5) for the idler pinions.
2. Install four drive pinions (1) in the end of the case opposite the flange. Install shafts
(5) for the drive pinions.
3. Install four drive pinions (1) in the end of the case with the flange. Install shafts (5)
for the drive pinions.

4. Put the holes in the shafts in alignment with the holes in the case and install pins (6)
to hold the shafts.

5. Install ring (7) in the grooves in the differential case.

6. Install gears (8) in each end of the differential case.

7. Put oil on both sides of springs (10) and install them so that the outside diameters
make contact with the gear first.

8. Heat the bearings to a maximum temperature of 275F (135C) and install them on
covers (11).
9. Put 5P960 Multipurpose Type Grease on both sides of discs (9) and install the discs
on covers (11).
10. Put covers (11) in position and install the bolts and lockwire to hold the covers.

11. Fasten a hoist and install the differential in the carrier.

Differential And Bevel Gear

(Front and Rear)
SMCS - 3263-15 ; 3263-16
/sisw eb/sisw eb/m /sisw eb/mediase

NOTE: Use the following torques and procedures for a Torque Proportioning
Differential.

TORQUE PROPORTIONING DIFFERENTIAL

CORRECT TOOTH CONTACT

(5) Torque for the bolts that hold carrier to axle housing:
920 and 930 with lockwashers ... 98 7 lb.ft.(133 10 Nm)
930 with flat washers ... 110 10 lb.ft.(150 14 Nm)
(11) Torque for the bolts that hold bevel gear to case ... 98 5 lb.ft.(133 7 Nm)

(13) Torque for bolts with flat washers (930) ... 110 10 lb.ft.(150 14 Nm)

Adjustment Procedure:
1. Install pinion shaft (2) with bearings in housing (1).
2. Tighten nut (7) on pinion shaft (2), until torque needed to turn pinion shaft (2) is ... 8
2 lb. in.(0.9 0.2 Nm)
3. Install lock and nut (10).
4. Install case assembly (8) in carrier (4) with bevel gear (9) on side toward dowel hole
in carrier (4).
5. Install pinion shaft (2) and housing (1) into carrier (4). Use shims (3) to put pinion
shaft (2) in alignment with bevel gear (9).
6. Make adjustments to nut (6) and (14) until free movement (backlash) (12) between
bevel gear (9) and pinion shaft (2) is:
(920) ... .005 to .010 in.(0.13 to 0.25 mm)
(930) ... .008 to .013 in.(0.20 to 0.33 mm)
7. Tighten nut (6) and (14) the same amount until the torque needed to turn pinion shaft
(2) is ... 30 to 50 lb. in.(3 to 6 Nm)
If the nuts are turned the same amount, the free movement (backlash) will not change.
8. Check free movement (backlash) again. If an adjustment is necessary, turn nut (6) and
(14) the same amount and in the same direction until the correct free movement
(backlash) is given. If the nuts are turned the same amount and in the same direction, the
bearing preload will not change.

9. Use the procedure that follows to check tooth contact:

a. Put a small amount of prussian blue, red lead, or paint on the ring gear teeth.
b. Turn the pinion shaft in both directions and check the marks made on the ring gear
teeth.
c. See the illustration for the marks of the correct tooth contact.

ILLUSTRATION A

10. If the marks on the ring gear look like the marks in Illustration A, use the procedure
that follows:
a. Remove some of shims (3).
b. After some of the shims are removed, do Steps 6, 7, and 8 again.
c. Check tooth contact again.

ILLUSTRATION B

11. If the marks on the ring gear look like the marks in Illustration B, use the procedure
that follows:
a. Install more of shims (3).

b. After more of the shims are installed, do Steps 6, 7, and 8 again.

NOTE: Several adjustments may be necessary before the tooth contact is correct. Free
movement (backlash) must be correct before tooth contact can be checked.
