Gender roles are the kinds of jobs and responsibilities that society expects women and men to do. Filling in
the T-chart will help you think about how gender roles have changed since the days of colonial America. On
one side of the chart, list at least four different jobs that women did in the past. On the other side, list some
jobs they do now.

Part II: Writing Assignment

Now, what do you think about the subject? Are you surprised by anything in the chart? Are there any
stereotypes, general assumptions about people that are incorrect, that you think aren't really true? (For
example, is it true that women used to "just stay home"?) Do women today have more rights and freedoms
than women in early America? You can write about one of these ideas or one of your own.
Write one complete paragraph about how gender roles have changed for women since colonial times.
Remember to indent the first line of your paragraph and start each sentence with a capital letter.
