A Petition To

Save Harlems Community Gardens

and
Harlem Growns Greenhouse
February 2015

February 14, 2015

To the Mayor of New York City:

Harlem shouldnt be forced to choose between its home-grown community gardens
and affordable housing. The attached petition lists the first 1,548 people signed on
to support our communitys fight to save these spaces in their current locations.

Please take the time to read these comments written by community members and
supporters from all around the city and worldwide, recognizing the need to protect
these spaces. These are your constituents and their beautiful words represent the
voices of our communities.

In Harlem, the need for affordable housing barely needs to be spoken. Our
community supports true affordable housing. Yet, Harlem residents live in a
Community Parks Initiative zone a label that signals years of neglect by the city in
capital improvements for our communitys green and play areas. We all of NYC,
across the country and the world - need solutions that allow our active community-
led spaces on the forefront of food and environmental justice to stay where they are
AND find suitable vacant spaces for affordable housing.

Attached you will find petition signatures and comments which attest to the long-
standing advocacy for community gardens citywide. Please reconsider the selection
of these sites for RFQs. Thank you.

Respectfully,

Your constituents and supporters of Harlems green spaces and community gardens
citywide

PETITION TEXT

Harlem shouldn't be forced to choose between its home-grown community
gardens and affordable housing. Please sign this petition to ask New York City
Housing Preservation and Development and Mayor Bill de Blasio to select
alternative sites for affordable housing to save our community gardens and
Harlem Grown's greenhouse.
Harlem Grown and its Executive Director Tony Hillery were just profiled in DNA
Info for the amazing work they provide for the Harlem community: its selection
by the city threatens a hydroponic greenhouse that produces over 2,000
pounds of food for the local community and local restaurants.
Community gardens selected in Harlem include the Jackie Robinson
Community Garden on Park Avenue and Pleasant Village Community
Garden's lots on East 118th Street. The Jackie Robinson garden was founded
over 20 years ago by Betty Gaether, a local resident, who turned a desolate strip
into a local jewel. It had been selected for tree pruning assistance through
the Gardens of the City program several years ago.
These long-standing community groups benefit our neighborhoods and
make our communities a better place: by educating our community about
healthy foods and urban gardening, providing job and volunteer opportunities,
and being on the front lines of food and environmental justice advocacy.
It is clear that our communities are welcome recipients of affordable housing
and we recognize the necessity. But with many vacant lots available, we
petition HPD and the Mayor to reconsider other sites for the affordable
housing plan so these long-standing community groups can continue to
benefit our community for years to come.

Petition by Marie Winfield, Friends of Thomas Jefferson Park, East Harlem/El Barrio

Harlem Grown means so much to this

community, please don't destroy this
beautiful asset! I lived in NYC for 10 years
and have personally volunteered there,
along with my entire office from
Expedia.com. We were blown away by
Tony's dedication and sacrifice to bring
quality food to the local community.
Please save Harlem Grown!

I was born and raised in this community it

has changed so much and I don't mind
change if its it's for a good cause but I
feel that sometimes people forget what
the true meaning of a community is it is
not the luxury in its surroundings but the
little places, stores that have been there
for years, gardens that the community
got together to built, the people that
have been living for 25 plus years! It's
nice to come back to my neighbors and
see the same people, the same stores,
the same gardens!

When I am in my community East 118st I
feel at home and remember my childhood
and desire to go back to those wonderful
years if I could only turn time but its not
possible! But just coming back to the
familiarity of the neighborhood gives me
the hope and strengthens my faith and I
feel everything is going to be ok! Please
don't take that away it may be
meaningless to many but to others
especially me that is worth more than a
million dollars. Thank you so much for
taking the time to read this message it
comes from my heart! God bless you :,)

There should be able to be community

gardens & affordable housing. Both
make for better community - something
that is getting lost in our fair city. Green
space - and gardens specifically - provide
such enjoyment and satisfaction - not to
mention the produce and flowers that are
created by hand. This has a very
different effect on our lives than the
benefits parks and bike paths provide.
Let's get creative and find alternate ways
to find space for housing

Transformed from an empty lot where

criminal activity often took place, it is
now an overflowing garden, a world unto
itself, full of greens and most
importantly full of exuberant kids from
the school across the street grabbing
your hand and dragging you to their
specific little plot of land, yelling "Try
this tomato!! I grew it myself!!" This is a
place where happiness and hope grows in
people and in the soil, as a people of nyc,
we must save it.

I work in NYC with community gardeners

and have been doing so for 10 years. I
understand how important community
gardens can be for creating necessary,
nourishing, collective spaces in
neighborhoods to provide open space,
community-building, civic pride, good
food, and so on. These spaces are so
often created by community members as
an act of love and healing. This is not
vacant land.

This is an incredible garden, unlike any

other I know of in the city, they're doing
incredible things, and THEY NEED THIS
SPACE! If it is sold for housing, it will
NOT serve the community in any way.
There really is no affordable housing in
this city. We need a place where children
and families really benefit, and this is a
space for the entire community!

We need the community gardens in

Harlem!!! There are lots of empty lots
and abandoned buildings that can be
replaced with affordable housing. Our
kids need the gardens and the green
house. It enhances quality of life for so
many who cannot afford homes with
backyards, vacationing or vacation
homes. The community garden builds
strong communities which leads to safer
neighborhoods! Think long-term or look
at the big picture if you will and keep the
community gardens. Everyone benefits
from it!

I am signing this petition because I live in

Harlem and these so call affordable
housing are not so affordable because
the majority of the people cannot afford
them. So, for who are they building these
so called affordable housing. These
companies build these building so close to
the other ones that are already there
that like me we do not have any
ventilation what so ever in the kitchen
and the bedroom we could touch the wall
from the other building that how close it
is. If there is a fire in our building we
would not have the proper way to get
out. Why not renovate all those buildings
that are empty and leave the garden for
our kids to enjoy?

I am an urban agriculture consultant
looking to build my career in NYC.
Working with the community greenhouse
on 135th street has helped me practice
my trade and give back to the
community. I have learned more than I
ever could about the subject from
volunteering at their thriving
greenhouse. I strongly oppose using that
land for anything other that a
community farm. Too much time and
money has been spent and too much local
good has come for it to be taken away
from the community. I am HarlemGrown!

Knowing the contribution and energy

these gardens brought to the Lower East
Side where I lived for 30 years, I thought
we had moved beyond the hyped false
dichotomy of affordable housing vs.
community gardens. With all the talk of
establishing a LES garden district let's
not forget all the other neighborhoods
from Harlem to East NY where
community gardens bring immeasurable
quality of life benefits to residents.

I am signing this because of my active

participation in gardens throughout
Harlem. I have had the blessing of being
apart of a youth organization that has
thought me the fundamentals of
gardening and landscaping. As a
teenager, working and developing our
garden, along with others, has thought
me skills and lessons that will be able to
stay with me for the rest of life. Stripping
away the gardens in Harlem will also
strip the opportunities to change a young
person's life.

I pass this incredible garden almost every

day. This special community driven
initiative is exactly what we should be
seeing more of in NYC. To destroy it when
we have so many other viable sites for
affordable housing is not only tragic but
irresponsible. In a climate where we have
seen so many extra curricular
constructive educational programs in
Harlem cut due to funding, the garden
remains a beacon of hope. PLEASE save
and continue to support this garden. It is
essential for the community!

In the past ten years that I have been

working with children in scool /
community gardens I have seen the
amazing power and benefit of people
growing food together and having good
food to eat. We face many problems in
today's world - community gardens are
part of the solution. They are a
wonderful example of people of all ages
working together to help others and
themselves. Protecting and supporting
them helps positive outcomes for public
health and environmental stability.
Studies have shown that behavior and
cognitive abilities are improved by
children who have access to nature
including gardens (Pew Charitable Trust
1996)

Harlem's pocket parks and gardens are

really the jewels of the neighborhood.
They're treasured by the community and
should not be demolished for new
housing. There are plenty of city-owned
lots that aren't occupied by garden
space. Use them instead. The lack of
intelligent planning is beyond
disgraceful. Frankly, it's embarrassing
that a progressive mayor would even
consider destroying community gardens
that have helped revitalize and stabilize
neighborhoods.

I am born in Harlem and still living here. I

would like to uplift Harlem and give back
to what is raising me. Despite
gentrification and migrations of outer
city folk to the village, there are natives
that are working to keep the authentic
culture by giving who we are and
representing Harlem the best. We should
conserve our landmarks and our lands ,
our gardens, our Harlem owned
businesses and we should try to keep this
village fostered and thriving
authentically!

Community Gardens bring the people

given out to the community, the children

There is just as much need for community

run green space and the chance for
young people/residents to learn how to
grow plants and food as there is for
affordable housing. I'm sure there are
way more abandoned lots and
dilapidated/abandoned buildings that
could be used for development without
destroying community gardens!

I'm signing this petition because I believe

these gardens support a cultural and
environmental vibrancy unique to NYC
and much needed in any urban
landscape. They create supportive
communities of committed individuals
dedicated to making areas of our city
safe havens where children and adults
can find peace and security. Additionally,
I could never overstate the
environmental heat island mitigation
aspects of such green spaces and the
benefits they contribute to surrounding
development both aesthetically and in
physical gains such as fresh, healthy
produce.

The East Village, where I live, lost many

of its gardens to upscale luxury condos,
which benefit no one, thanks to the
multi-million dollar giveaways to
developers. Do not allow the same thing
to happen there, and be real what will
go in will not be affordable, no one builds
that any more. It will be for the rich,
which everything in the city is these days,
and to hell with the rest of us.

I'm signing because this garden is part of

Coalition, and it would sadden us to see
this place go. We have learned and
shared so much with Tony, his garden,
and our groups of kids and teens, and I
don't think it's fair that we should have
to choose between affordable housing
and a garden that benefits, not only the
school across the street, but our
organization, as well as many others.

There should be room for both
community gardens and more
importantly HOMES!! That we the
normal working people can afford. There
wouldn't be a problem making room for a
Target or Pet Co and A Harlem Trump

gardens = sustainability and for some an
affordable means to feed our families.

A community in NYC should not have to

choose between self sustained survival
techniques and affordable housing,
especially since there are thousands of
places in this city where affordable
housing could be built without taking
away the precious few usable green
spaces in this city. Harlem Grown has
found a way to feed the community and
educate the young, and now the city
wants to end all of that??? Really bad
idea and so not cost effective to anybody
in the long run.

I have met Tony and the others that work

at [Harlem Grown] and greenhouse
project and have had guided tours by the
children they work with. The kids
Tony works with are so enthusiastic to
learn about growing their own food and
making their own compost. Their
enthusiasm is contagious and now their
school and their families are involved.
This is the most positive project that I
have experienced since moving to
Harlem. The Greenhouse employs local
people and also teaches how to grow
food. There are plenty of other empty
lots in the city that could be used for
housing, but this lot needs to remain free
for growing vegetables. Please don't
crush the dream and project that the
children and gardeners have worked so
hard to create.

Community gardens are oasises in New
York's urban jungle, where citizens have
a peaceful place to unite, empower,
educate and nourish themselves.
These gardens are vital to the
community. The people created them out
of desire and necessity. More housing
should be built elsewhere.

I'm signing because community gardens
in urban areas are very important to me,
especially Harlem where I live and raise
my son. They provide much needed
community space, the ability to grow
food and add beauty to the city.
They are a place to be calm and
contemplative in the noisy stressful city.

experience of gardening is vital to our

Neighborhoods should not have to

Petition for Harlems green spaces

We need Harlem Grown in the community. We need to stay on the corner of Happy &
Healthy. Mr. Hillery cares so much for the people in the community. He knows the
importance of everyone having a daily balance of nutrition. Harlem Grown has
brought awareness to everyone.

The community looks forward to Mr. Hillerys fruits & vegetables. The children in the
neighborhood are happy to help in the garden.

I am signing because it doesn't make sense to me how active community gardens
owned by the city are being used for housing. There are more empty lots owned by the
city than community gardens. Empty lots should be assessed first.

Harlem Grown is a great organization. Please find an alternative site for the housing.
The people of Harlem should not have to choose between these two things.

This garden is making an invaluable impact on Harlem youth--on their current and
future health, on their sense of ownership and entrepreneurship, on the strength of
their relationship with their community and their city. Find another site for affordable
housing that's not already being used to make powerful change!
