Introduction

Description

Students look at the school network and are introduced to basic file
keeping and ways of working in an ICT room.

Starter

Typical hazards in an ICT room brainstorm

Main Activity

File management all students log onto school network and are shown how
to create files. Rules of how to work should be discussed. I.e. Saving
regularly, backing up important work, creating sensible file names.
Devise a simple poster for rules in an ICT room.
Allow students free choice of software and provide little guidance on the
direction the poster should take.
Load the email software via Huxley and allow students to log on using email
account information. Show how to attach a file, how to address an email
and send the work.

2&3

Baseline test / Internet intro (2 sessions)

Description

The lesson has 2 parts: baseline practical test followed by a theory test

Lesson
Outcomes

To determine ability of group using basic practical task(s).


To enable opportunity for students to chose appropriate software.
To determine students knowledge of a range of ICT solutions.

Starter

Explanation of testing and National Curriculum levels. use a visual aid to


explain the levels that can be achieved
Explanation of the structure of the Key stage 3 skills - use visual aid to
explain structure and relevance

Main Activity

Practical session (session 1)


The Shorter focused baseline tasks should be short enough for students
to carry out more than one. Start all students off on the basic word
processing task. DO NOT tell students which package to use they should
be starting to chose which is most appropriate (obviously if they struggle
guide them towards an appropriate one). Ensure students email a copy of
their work as they finish.
Move students on to other relevant tasks as they finish.
Theory test (session 2)
This is to test students ability to communicate their wider knowledge of
the packages they have used and their ability to explain their use of ICT.
The test should take about half an hour.
Use the remaining time to evaluate the questions, feedback practical
session marks and review first module.

Plenary

Review key terms covered in the session. Common problems, common areas
that were handled well.

All About me

Description

Students to Word Process a small piece of work about themselves, save,


upload to their Huxley e portfolio and show it to the group.

Outcomes

To ensure that all students can create a folder


To ensure that all students can decide on a suitable computer package
To understand that there are different forms of information used on the
network text, graphics, sound,
To consolidate skills learnt in previous lesson

Starter

What is an electronic portfolio and why is it useful.


Visual presentation how to load the index file for Huxley and how to
create a simple hyperlink.

Main Activity

All about me - Write a short and descriptive information sheet about you.
(Activity is used to encourage students to take ownership of their e
portfolio)
Try and encourage students to as visual as possible use of images to
describe areas of interest, font and colour which portrays them as an
individual.
Save file and create a link from the index of the e portfolio.

Plenary

Peer evaluation discussion on the work that has been linked to the e
portfolio.
(Try and obtain the top three and award ICT credit)
