Acupuncture
Awareness Week
Acupuncture Awareness Week (AAW), supported by the
British Acupuncture Council, aims to help better inform
people about the ancient practice of traditional acupuncture.
This year's AAW, from 2-8 March, is the third annual event.
With 2.3 million acupuncture treatments carried out each
year, acupuncture is one of the most popular complementary
therapies practised in the UK today. Yet many people only
discover acupuncture as a last resort despite its widely
recognised health benefits.
Acupuncture is considered suitable for all ages including
babies, children and the elderly. It can be very effective and
is often integrated with conventional medicine. The
treatment is widely considered to be beneficial for a range of
symptoms resulting from illness, from clearly defined
complaints or to improve general feelings of wellbeing and
help with relaxation.

Can acupuncture help you?

More and more people all over the world are turning to
traditional acupuncture as an alternative or complementary
way of caring for their health, and there is increasing
evidence of its efficacy in a number of painful and debilitating
chronic conditions. Traditional acupuncture gently balances
the bodys energies, helping to alleviate symptoms and
promote physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. There is
increasingly strong evidence from clinical trials showing its
effectiveness in treating such diverse conditions as low back
pain, osteoarthritis of the knee, nausea and migraines. It is
considered suitable for all ages, and can be safely used
alongside conventional medical treatment.

Many different celebrities are also acupuncture fans

including TV presenter and Style Editor Donna Air, who has
lent her endorsement to the 2015 Acupuncture Awareness
Week. She first had acupuncture to cope with the stressful
demands of live TV and now has regular sessions to help
maintain good health. Celebrity supporters of acupuncture
who have endorsed AAW in the past include actress Toyah
Wilcox (who has regular treatment for insomnia) and dancer
Camilla Dallerup (who receives acupuncture for back pain).

Youre never too young for

acupuncture!
As a gentle holistic treatment,
traditional acupuncture is suitable
for all ages, including babies and
children, and in fact I have a
particular interest in treating
children. I currently have a number
of children, the youngest of whom is
just 18 months old, regularly
coming for treatment. Acupuncture
can work really quickly in children
one parent recently said I found
that acupuncture treatments almost
had an immediate effect on [my
childs] health and emotionsshe is
like a different child.
Combined with other related therapetuic techniques, such as
acupressure and massage, acupuncture is very safe and
effective and despite the occasional reluctance of older
children (and their parents!) to contemplate needles, once
theyve had one treatment, most children are perfectly
happy to return and actually find the sessions enjoyable.
Acupuncture needles are extremely fine no bigger than a
human hair and insertion is quick and painless. Also,
needles are not retained when treating children, so that the
actual needling part of the session is over in seconds!

Is acupuncture safe?
One of the questions that prospective patients often ask is how
safe acupuncture is. When you receive treatment from a BAcC
registered practitioner (who will have the letters MBAcC after
their name), you can be confident that your wellbeing and
safety is at the heart of everything your practitioner does. The
following assurances are BAcC standard:

BAcC members have completed a first-degree-level

training or equivalent in traditional acupuncture including
substantial elements of conventional medical anatomy,
physiology and pathology
Your BAcC acupuncturist will take a detailed health history
prior to the first treatment. Occasionally, based on this
information, he or she may refer you to your GP for
investigation or treatment

Gwenans acupuncture clinics

BAcC acupuncturists use only pre-sterilised single-use

needles which are safely disposed of after the treatment

All treatments are carried out in accordance with

exemplary professional standards developed by the British
Acupuncture Council and detailed in the BAcC Codes of
Safe Practice and Professional Conduct

The treatment room and all equipment must conform to

standards laid out in the BAcC Code of Safe Practice and
have also been approved by local authority environmental
health officers

BAcC members have full medical

malpractice and public/product
liability insurance cover.
