Proprietary Joint Invented to Resolve Installation Time of Traditional

Casing Pipe Using Field Butt-Welded Joints

Inventor Michael E. Argent

Patented Product

More than 1.75 million feet installed to-date

Mike Argent - Recognized as one of the Trenchless Technology

industrys true visionaries, founding directors of the North
American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT) in 1990,
NUCAs 1992 Associate of the Year Award. Gained original Patent
for Permalok Joint in 1993, founded the Permalok Corp. Passed
away Feb 20, 2009.

THE PROBLEM - Traditional

Casing Pipe Assembly

WHY PERMALOK??
Typical Steel Casing Pipe is
installed in the field by
butt-welding of the joints.
This results in
Lengthy Installation
Times
Low Productivity
Specialized Labor
(Certified Welders)
Specialized Equipment
Failure to properly
ground during
welding can lead to
jacking equipment
malfunction
High Cost$$$

THE SOLUTION - Permalok

The Permalok joint utilizes a
precision-machined interference fit
that eliminates the need for timeintensive, field-applied butt welds
on trenchless installations.
Result Increased Productivity
Increased Safety During
Assembly and Installation
Watertight Joints
High Compressive Strengths
Short, segmental joints,
allows microtunneling
equipment better directional
control versus monolithic
butt-welded casings
Substantial Construction
$$$avings!

Manufacturing Process

1 Precision-cut

carbon steel plates,

using computer
controlled plasma
or oxy-fuel
equipment to
ensure Permalok
casing pipes size
specifications (Burn
Table)

Manufacturing Process

2 Exactly sized and

cut plates are roll

formed into
cylinders and tack
welded to
maintain
dimensions.

Manufacturing Process

3 Tack welded rolled cylinders

undergo automatic double
submerged arc welding
(DSAW). Size specifications
are again verified prior to
welding.

4 Cylinders are joined

utilizing jig and
welded together
(DSAW) to meet
customer length
requirements,
typically 20-ft

5 The cylinder is

completed by
welding (DSAW)
the seams utilizing
the digital readout
weld controller, a
unique Permalok
design

Manufacturing Process

Manufacturing Process

6 The diameter of the

pipe is again tested

for roundness and
the patented
Permalok profile is
added by welding
onto the end of each
pipe.

7 If specified, the finished pipe

is lined and coated to
customer requirements and
prepared for shipment.

Joint Details T5
The T5 Permalok joint utilizes
a precision machined
interference fit
T-5 unique profile is machined
to tolerances of 0.005 inch,
which creates a joint of
consistent quality and
integrity that is leak resistant
even under considerable
groundwater pressures

Joint Installation
The T5 Permalok Joint is designed to
handle various types of loading conditions
that a casing pipe is likely to undergo in
the field.
Through more than 1.75 million feet of
proven installations, the joint has been
proven to be suited in both compression
and bending in the following applications:
PIPE JACKING
MICROTUNNELING
PIPE RAMMING
AUGER BORING
DIRECT PIPE

Joint Installation
Permalok is steel pipe,
FLEXIBLE. Joints are
precision machined fit
As steel pipe is never
perfectly round, it is good
practice to measure across
the face of each male and
female end to determine
max and min deviations
from round, prior to placing
the pipe for joint make-up
Match marking the pieces in
this manner will aid and
expedite the mating process
in the work pit

Joint Installation
Both ends are
factory coated with a
wax-like rust
inhibitor, which must
be removed prior to
joint assembly (use
petroleum-based
solvent and a stiff
brush, then wipe
clean)

Joint Installation

Apply a bead of RTV silicone sealant temporary

lubrication and sealant when dry
Initial mating procedure joint should be stabbed
from top to bottom (or bottom to top), NOT
STRAIGHT ON, UNTIL THE LEADING EDGE OF THE
MALE JOINT IS COMPLETELY ENGAGED IN THE
FEMALE END

Joint Installation
Push rings provided with
the pipe to protect the
ends from damage during
jacking
A 60-inch OD Permalok
Casing Pipe, with a wall
thickness of 0.625-inch,
will require
approximately 40 to 60
tons of compressive force
to complete the
connection.

Installation Comparisons

Installation Methods
Trenchless Construction Methods
resolve many of the problems
associated with traditional pipeline
construction, such as Cutting of
Existing Surface Infrastructure,
Social Costs such as Traffic
Disruption, Noise, Air Pollution,
etc. Trenchless installations are
arguably safer also. Permalok
Casing Pipe is ideal for trenchless
installation by:

PIPE JACKING
MICROTUNNELING
PIPE RAMMING
AUGER BORING
DIRECT PIPE

Pipe jacking utilizes a jacking

device to push pipe horizontally
into the ground, forming a
continuous string of pipe.
Material is excavated as the pipe
is pushed in.

One of the oldest forms of

trenchless construction, can be
found in pipe design manuals
dating back to the 1930s.

Offers little control over the

pipeline alignment

Other methods of pipe jacking

have evolved as a result

Pipe Jacking

Microtunneling
Microtunneling is a
method of steerable,
remote pipe jacking that
is controlled from the
surface and advanced
through the ground with
a set of jacks.
The microtunnel boring
machine mines the
tunnel path remotely as
individual pipes are
joined in succession
behind the advancing
machine.

Int. Jacking Stations

For long Microtunneling
drives and also when
geological conditions are
challenging, jacking
forces can become very
high. This is resolved
using intermediate
jacking stations (IJS).
This minimizes total
load on the pipe and the
shaft.
Permalok casing pipe
can be easily fitted with
IJSs as needed.

Pipe Ramming uses a

pneumatic hammer that
is placed at the back end
of the pipe, which is then
hammered open ended,
like a horizontal piledriving operation.

When the Permalok

casing comes out the
other side, all of the
spoils are removed from
the inside of the casing
pipe by augering, jetting
or compressed air. No
ground is actually
disturbed outside the
casing pipe.

Pipe Ramming

Auger Boring

Auger boring is one of

the oldest trenchless
construction methods
around. The auger is in
essence a large drill bit
that excavates the soil
as each pipe section is
advanced forward by
jacking.

Then the auger

machine is moved
back, a new section of
pipe is joined, and the
operation is repeated
until completion of the
drive.

Herrenknechts Direct
Pipe method enables
borehole excavation
and installation of a
pipeline in one single
step, by combining HDD
and Microtunneling.
Expeditious and
economic installation of
pipelines with lengths
of more than 5,000 ft,
min. Dia of 30-inch and
max. Dia of 60-inch.

Direct Pipe

High alignment accuracy compared to

HDD, No Reaming
Possible to cut thru wide variety of
geological conditions
Minimal Overburden
Minimizes Frac-Out risks
