Summary of Course Content:


This course introduces students to the principles of fluid mechanics and the application of these
principles to practical and applied problems. Primary emphasis is on fluid properties; the
measurement of pressure, density, viscosity, and flow; fluid statics; forces developed by static
fluids and fluids in motion; buoyancy of an object in fluid; flow of fluids in pipes; and head
losses in pipes. Related equations of fluid mechanics such as continuity equation, momentum
equation, energy equation, Bernoulli equation, Newtons Law, etc. will be taught.

1 Chapter 1. The nature of fluids and the study of fluid mechanics - Fluid properties such as
mass, density, specific density, dynamic viscosity,kinematic viscosity, pressure and force.
2 Chapter 2. Pressure measurement - Hydrostatic pressure, Pascal's law, absolute,
atmospheric and gage pressure, manometer, piezometer, barometer and differential
manometer.
3 Chapter 3. Forces due to static fluids - Hydrostatic pressure on horizontal surface, slanted
surface and vertical surface (dam and gate).
4 Chapter 3. Forces due to static fluids - Submerged plane area, piezometric head and
submerged curve area.
5 Chapter 4. Buoyancy and stability - Buoyancy, Archimedes principle and bouyancy
material.
